  • My Dad worked at Channel 7 until 2000, he was there when Bill flipped out, I think that was his voice in the background too at 0:53. My family know him and his wife and family very well, I always remember going to his house on Christmas Eve, eventually we showed him this a couple years ago, he was in tears of laughter

  • @TUdaToken Respect. He was one hell of a journalist.

  • Okay, one other thing: we've heard for years about Bill's challenging Detroit's mayor Young to a boxing match while on the air. I didn't see that but I heard a lot about it. So where's the clip for it? That's a piece of local folklore and if anyone has a recording of it out there then it deserves to be posted here on Youtube

  • A couple of things:

    1) This was NOT live. Bonds was taping a news brief promo. You could classify this as a blooper reel.

    2) Bill Bonds wasn't drunk here. What made him fly off the handle was that the copy was very poorly written. Bill was a trained journalist who got his start in the print media. He may have been obnoxious and an alcoholic, but he knew how to write. Unlike a lot of "talent" these days who were hired merely because they looked and sounded good on tv

  • I didnt know George Carlin anchored the news . . . . LOL!!!

  • He must have been TORE UP DRUNK!!!! Too bad it's so blurry that we can't see the infamous bad toupee.

  • LOl @ let them go hungry

  • He had an on-air breakdown when the sports guy (can't recall his name) wore one of his toupees during his part of the broadcast. Happened sometime during the early 80's.

  • He was paid to report not to elaborate......

  • @DONNI -- don't know why you have to yell your name -- oh yeah, I guess it's because you're forgettable otherwise. Anyway, I'm a Ph.D. in history with books published, so I think I know how to research, you twit. I so treasure your o so intelligent advice. Go continue to get drunk with Bill.

  • @drvannostrum1

Wow, aren't we an arrogant, self-important little cocksucker? Nobody really gives a flying fuck about your alleged PhD and likely bogus claim about having books published.

  • The original "I'll do it live."

  • The whole point of Bill's tirade here wasn't the poor or homeless people. He flew off the handle because of the copy(or script) was written bad. Bill battled alcoholism for many years and it eventually got him fired from Channel 7. At times he was drunk, obnoxious and ego maniacal but he also was a first class journalism from the old school.

  • @yourdickis2limp you read that in the trailer park journal huh? was it in the Meth section?

  • Bill Bonds! He was "The News". America had Walter Cronkite but Detroit had Bill Bonds. Have they named a school or library after Bill yet?

  • real life ron burgundy lol

  • i got drunk with bill bonds and eric smith one time

    back in the 80s

    sullys in dearborn ?

    two hilarious dudes

  • I heard his voiceover in a lawyer commercial and it seems he lost his clear voice.

  • Was this recorded with a Nokia cell phone.

  • He just sounds like a prick.

  • What year was this filmed?

  • @jityr2 1903

  • congrats.. the worst quality video Ive seen ever.

  • I met Bill Bonds at a channel 56 auction. It was in the 70's, I was around 7 years old. He was pleasant to be around in his PR appearances. Watching him on the news was truly a privilege. So many news people just read..a broadcaster. Not a news journalist with passion. He brought viewers to channel 7 news. If the employees didn't care for it, they could have went to WDIV or elsewhere. Colman Young, a greedy evil bass tard that helped Detroit go down hill. Just like recent Detroit politicians..

  • If you don't buy furniture from Gardener White, don't talk to me.

  • <3 Bill Bonds...what the fuck do it mean lol,he love to say fuck lmao

  • Hey where is Rich Fisher these days????

  • Oh man, this is hilarious!

  • Bill Bonds was one of the last of a disappearing breed, an anchorman who was also a bona fide journalist. Now it's all prettyboy talking heads.

  • How did this ever get out of the station?!

  • drunk fucking bastard

  • YOUNG was a crook made kilpatrick look like a chruch boy

  • Is this from 1983?

  • Channel 7 needs another news anchor like this...Stephen Clark is nice and all, but...lol

  • I do believe this was before the movie Network which had a similiar situation.

  • a-hole

  • LMAO

  • he spazzing ou tlike Bill O'Riley!!!!

  • @1PRINCESS4PEACE Two peas in a pod, those two.

  • My best Bill Bonds moment was when he was pulled over drunk by the cops in Bloomfield Hills...classic

  • Billy Bonds, good lord they do not have anchors like him any more! Something else!

  • I just got a Bill O'Reilly flashback!

  • I'll always cut Bill Bonds slack- his daughter died in a car crash many years ago- he never got over it.

  • haha I love when he refers to Doris Biscoe at 2:12 .... lol. "Doris'll be sayin, 'I wanted the blue-eyed mother f---er to get fired.....'"

  • A real touch of class

  • Bill was the White Colman Young. heheheh

  • People used to gather around their sets in preparation to watch Bill Bonds in those days.Like they did with Carson. He was like a friend we could identify with Open- honest - free wheeling- intense. Do all our friends say/think what we want or expect? No ! That was the beauty of it! Even those who disliked his delivery watched, and obviously from this board, won't admit to his charisma and impact!

  • speed is a little fast obviously But this is historic Bill Bonds The best newsman Detroit ever had!!! We miss his candor and delivery A legend !! Thanks for the video Remarkable!

  • I remember one Channel 7 news broadcast in 1984 where the first news item was about the Jacksons concert that was in Detroit that night. Bill started off the broadcast by saying "I can't believe that this is the lead story" LOL

  • reminds me of Bill OReilly

  • hes only human folks.

  • Bonds is sober now.

  • He referred to Doris Biscoe as a "porch monkey" at one time.

  • I remember that too about that comment on Doris, Bill Bonds was such an idiot! He used to wish he could go boxing with the mayor of Detroit because of how bad Detroit was.

It's one thing to be honest and original in news reporting, but his crass profanity overflow from his mouth makes him no different than the "ghetto folk" he used to criticize. This video clearly represents a testiment to his immaturity rather than professionalism.

I glad his azz was fired!

  • You don't like Bill ? Your entitled!! Bonds became a celebrity who happened to be very good at what he did His style alienated some but ask Biscoe and Diana Lewis who they admired and thought was king. Can't you lighten up a little? Those were the classic days. Be glad you were around to enoy them. Sure it was a time of no holds barred news reporting. But that is why we still talk of Bonds..Surely you can appreciate that.? Was he Tom Brokaw? No! But Tom was just a news reader

  • If you like Bill that's fine, but as you can see I'm disgusted by him.

I'm sure Biscoe and Lewis said that publicly to keep their job, I mean would you admired someone who threw racial slurs at you? "Classic days of journalism"? Please if I wanted to see dramatics, I would have watched Donahue than seeing Bonds.

When I look for "no holds barred news reporting" it would be Edward Murrow or Walter Cronkite, or currently Steve Wilson when it comes to investigative journalism.

  • He was a drunk, that is the only reason he wanted to box Colemen Young....It had nothing to do with how Detroit was...

  • @damron13 OMG. I did'nt know he said that to her. when did this happened? Such ignorance on his part

  • This never aired on TV, this was a teaser for the evening news.....

  • I loved Bill Bonds. He was the original. I mean, this guy was totally no horse-hockey. And, today, he is recognized as being a guy who works for a living. Ok, he was out of touch. He never worked a line. But, he sure talked like he had worked for a living.

  • Bonds is a rockstar.

  • I seen him a few months ago at greektown casino shooting craps.....i think he wears a rug now......

  • Bill has worn a rug for probably close to 40 years

  • Do you have to be a total dick to be a news anchor or something?

  • There is no comparison to being a dick and being a TV news anchor. As a matter of fact, Bill Bonds is a long-time news anchor in the Detroit area, is NOT a dick by ANY stretch of the imagination, and he is one person I know of that isn't afraid to speak the truth. If something is going on he disagrees with or doesn't approve of, he is one person who is going to speak his piece. Its just a shame others won't do the same. Maybe it'll do some good to some of the people around here who have no clue.

  • This guy acted like a total unprofessional idiot on television. Maybe in your world when people use profanity and have hissy fits that equates to truth (or your version of the "truth.")

  • I agree with you whole-heartedly, apparently most people who think he's some courageous newsanchor just because he bit*hed on everything corrupt obviously have never heard of Edward Murrow or Walter Cronkite who actually were courageous but were classly. Bill Bonds had to behave like "Jerry Springer clown" on-air since just to get attention, but Murrow & Cronkite facts already gave them attention and respect.

  • it was a much different world when Murrow was reporting.A news reporter then was a product of his time Don't think Bonds would consider himself an ER Murrow but that probably wasn't Bill's eventual goal He liked controversy. Bonds was part Cronkite- part muckraker. He liked to pontificate but that was, or eventually, became his forte.I am sure he was aware of ratings and so was the station Why he made huge dollars. You didn't care for his antics Sure booze played a small part at times..

  • Apparently, LOL! I find it hilarious that people find an emotionally, uncontrolled mouth as courageous.

  • Watch your mouth, Bill! There are viewers watching. You want a massive boycott on your hands???

  • holy shit am i drunk or is this all fuzzy

  • No, it's as fuzzy as a 3-week-old turd. :P

  • How do these tapes of otherwise miled mannered people get out of the studio? This isn't the only one out there there are others of other people.

  • I might also add that Bill has been in trouble with the law for frunk driving. Wonder if he was drunk then? At any rate, the economy in Detroit is much worse now then it was when this was recorded!

  • BILL BADASS BONDS LOVE HIM

  • Comment removed

  • He must have got up on the wrong side of the bed that day

  • EXACTLY!!!!

  • I liked him while I was growing up, but later came to resent his editorializing every bit of news he delivered. It was kinda like having a waiter pre-chew your food for you when all he is supposed to do is deliver it.

  • I was born & raised in Detroit, and am living in Denver. Bill & former mayor Coleman Young used to have battles that were legendary!

I give Bill major props, he used to go toe-to-toe with Young, and neither one backed down. He was a damn good journalist!!

I knew he had a drinking problem; I didn't know he had such a foul mouth!! Him and Bob Allison "Bowling For Dollars" used to really get their drink on back in the day. Lol Lol.

  • Great video -- I grew up in Detroit and loved Bill Bonds on 7 Action News; he told it like it was, and it's too bad that there weren't more voices critical of Coleman Young to try to stop the city's pitiful slide. I heard from a former caddy at Oakland Hills that the caddies used to hide when he'd come there drunk. It's too bad; I'm sure he's a good guy off the bottle.

  • So i take it you respect drunks on the air????

  • Well, let me put it this way: I have more respect for a drunk who still has enough sense to criticize a crooked mayor than I do for someone who tries to appear smart with a pointless comment on something I said months ago.

  • @drvannostrum1 You are still a crackhead, and bill is a drunk...a couple made in hell

  • Ah, papicholo, you are clearly a great intellectual with incredible debating skill. Please allow me to bow -- with the back end fittingly facing you. Have a good life-- feel free to let me know when you get one.

  • @drvannostrum1 Stop perpin, you are a drunken crackhead with little brains left in your head.Yo go Bill....LOL.Move out of your moms basement and stop flipping burgers at White Caslte's...You fucking moron

  • Perpin? Who replied to who after my comment was nine months old> Really, your comments just cut me to the core; I am going to lose sooooo much sleep tonight --- really good ones. I guess the supervisor at the home forgot to check up on your e-mail usage -- that's a shame.

  • @drvannostrum1 Like I said puto, stop perpin, you crackheaded maricon...LOL,Like you still got brains in your head after smoking all them rocks...

  • @drvannostrum1 LOL He and Coleman were friends dont believe the hype. put your hate and false accusations of Coleman in your pocket. End your bar and backyard gossip, learn to research.

  • Incidental cussing is one thing and understandable but when someone goes off like this it indicates a real lack of discipline. The guy had a problem.

  • Smacks a bit of the movie 'Network'.

  • see, when the screen goes black, he's taking a nip off a bottle under the desk.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

Love him or hate him, Bill Bonds was his own man. He blew up at the way the material was written not at the people off camera. They obviously liked him and he liked them. There they are joking with each other about the screw up.

No crew member would dare to joke around when Bill O'Reilly blows up on the O'Reilly Factor. His crew would be too afraid to. O'Reilly is a tyrant with anger management problems.

Bill Bonds was just a regular guy having a bad day.

  • Bill Bonds is a drunk ASSHOLE!!

  • YES SIR

  • THAT'S WHY I LIKE HIM! If it was too hard for him to fake it - the real bill showed up! God love him!

  • I can remember when he was constantly getting busted for drunk driving around the metro Detroit area.

  • @spdskte Approximately how many times did he get busted for drunk driving?

  • Bill Bonds was a crazy mofo.

  • I love his comments about the poor.....he has class...

  • sounds like it could be todays news

  • Reminds me of Bill O'reilly's meltdown.I remember when this asshole called out Mayor Young to put on some boxing gloces, and fight him in Hart Plaza. They broke to a commercial ,when they came back, that foo was gone.......put his ass in rehab for a month....LOL

  • lmfaoo this does sound like bill o'reilly's meltdown....they are both right to get upset cuz the script has shitty flow.

  • Maybe, but they are both still assholes.

  • LOL! I remember that too about how he wanted to box Mayor Young. So glad his azz was fired! His cynical bit*hing was so annoying, apparently being stubborn, opinionated and being a drama queen means having courage! LOL Yeah, so then what is Edward Murrow and Walter Cronkite then?

  • Do you remember his blue convertibale corvette>?????Bill. Bonds was the first Bill O'reilley...LOL

  • bill bonds is having a bill oriely momemnt i love em :)

  • wtf does that mean LOL

  • LOL!!! LOVE Bill Bonds!

  • Bill has always been a gentleman every time I've seen him. He is a perfectionist and they often get upset at mistakes others would not notice. And for good reason... people would think he was saying the script - his reporting - but in reality - someone else writing the piece that wasn't as competent. Good reason to get upset. That's really not unusual in broadcasting and probably elsewhere.

  • Were you an on air personality on 98.7 Smooth Jazz Radio? What a great unique mellow relaxing station that was! Many I know only listened to that station. One day I tuned in and heard Miley Cyrus?? Couldn't believe it!! I still have a copy of the station promo vhs tape and cassette tape[ unfortunately the cassette tape broke] with John Butterfield doing the short intros to the mellow jazz samplers. I remember you and John Bond .Who was Butterfield? That is you on TV now isn't it? Take care

  • @lpvcrcd Hi, I finally logged in again. Yep, it's me. I'm still with Metro Traffic and assigned to Fox 2 and fill-in on some Cleveland and Columbus stations. Lots of folks miss Smooth Jazz on the main HD channel... but the music and Madisun are on HD2 and Alexander Zonjic and I have been doing a weekend show that airs in the Toronto area on The Wave, here on Smooth Jazz V98.7 HD2 and some other Internet stations. Jon Butterfield is a voice over pro out of Chicago who did promos and sweepers.

  • Bill was a drunken fool

  • lmao..hes a jerk

  • Could you please upload the interview between BB and Coleman Young? :-)

  • Bill Bonds was the shit...well he was not drunk

  • 1:01-1:09: Drunk or not, Bill Bonds is right. Journalists should think about the purpose of a message. "Are without a place to go" incites emotion, but not knowledge, in a viewer. "Are homeless" not only incites the same emotion--because it's saying the SAME THING--but also educates the viewer. Only PR people should use wordy BS. Journalists should cut out the PR junk and tell the real story. Then again, PR people get paid more than journalists, so maybe some are prepping for career changes.

  • Journalists should report on what happened. That's it. No opinions, no telling us what to do about something, just report.

  • long before the Bill O'Reilly blowup on Inside Edition there was this little gem.. a classic...

  • no clarity, sound quality crap, poor video too.

  • What the fuck are you, Spielberg? Geez. Lighten up.

  • You fucking dipshit moron, try reading the description, instead of posting a stupid ass comment thats OBVIOUS, and NOTED from the person posting the clip!

  • I grew up watching Bill Bonds, Diana Lewis, Doris Briscoe, all of em on Channel 7. LOL

  • Realist. Comedian. Classic.

  • I knew Bill Bonds was an asshole but I never realized the magnitude of his assholiness till I watched this.

  • LOL!!! Assholiness.......

  • In my OPINION, Bill Bonds should have been the Mayor of Detroit...he loved Detroit...If we could do it all over again.....

  • Amen to that. Chances are, Detroit would probably be in better shape than it is today.

  • I'd vote him into the White House.

  • "Blue-eyed motherfucker to get fired" @ 2:14. LMAO! A classic indeed!

  • He has a MySpace page and it's hilarious.

  • Bill Bonds = Ron Burgandy

  • Classic Bill Bonds - great stuff.

  • I miss Bill Bonds. Love Bill Bonds. Grew up watching him!!! LOL!

  • Should have been Mayor. City would have rivaled Chicago. Instead you starve. Drinks or no drinks. So... starve to death.

  • <---- Instant fan

  • LOL! Bill Must have already been drunk! I bumped into him on the Bablo boat when I was 7 years old, cool dude. Nice to the kids. I'm glad he didn't yell at us like that tho...

  • in the 80's his teenage son was walking through the woods after a party and froze to death.

  • We need more like him!

  • Bonds was the news God of Detroit for many, many years. This pre-taped headline segment obviously never made it to air: but it's a prime example of his irascibility and energy. No one like him anymore.

  • FUCK YA MOMMA

  • I think Bill was bored-this was obviously a pre-taped news break they were trying to lay down-but Bonds felt the news copy was written poorly, and decided to let go...to the delight of the crew. Perhaps he had had a few, and decided to play this out to show the news copy people what shoddy writing was. Thanks for posting.

  • My mom tells me he was a drunk and that's one of the reasons he had to leave the air

  • In this clip-which was not done live-Bill wasn't ripping on poor prople or drunk. He was bitching about the poorly written script. I doubt modern day "reporters" like Shepard Smith would have the brains to catch something like that.

  • Re "poorly written script": Bonds was not alone in this respect; the late Floyd Kalber of WMAQ-TV (and later WLS-TV) took issue with poorly-written copy on a regular basis, from what I've read (I doubt on-the-air, though). I agree, today's "pretty boy" and "Barbie doll" anchors seem more interested in their looks than how something's written in the script.

  • whoa!!!

  • I used to serve him drinks before he went on the air. Pretty nice guy.

  • "Some Poor People in Detroit are without a Place To Go...TOUGH SHIT!" Pissed off Bonds = FUCKING CLASSIC!!! What year was this?

  • 1982

  • CLASSIC! Awesome stuff, thank you!

  • Tough ass old man!

  • Classic Bill Bonds. We need him back on the air!

  • Absolutely! I miss his on-air battles with Coleman Young. Now it's time for Bill VS Kwame.

  • O Id pay BIG MONEY to see that! Bill would knock him down so fast! LOL

  • nice film quality. did you record this underwater?

  • Wow...I never even saw any of this on the local Youngstown stations. This definately is a keeper!

  • Classic clip!!!

  • He was hung over!

  • Ahh, Bill Bonds...legend of Detroit.

  • Bill was the man in Detroit for decades. This clip is actually pretty funny. It shows that he truly was the master.

  • Definately a promo taping.

  • Curious where you got this. I've wanted to find more of these kind of BIll The Mill clips.

  • This was actually a news break that was taped and inserted on occassion between network or local programming. They are still done but now they are 15-30 seconds long at the most.

  • No argument here, Bill was an alcoholic. If anybody has ever knew one, you would know that makes them hard to get along with, especially if thehy are recovering.

    Have some sympathy, folks.

Be that as it may, Bill was taping a promo. It wasn't live. And being from the old school of journalism, he was complaining about the writing here.

  • Sadly Bill's daughter was killed in a car accident driven by Bill. This was back in the 80's and his alcohol level was over 3.0

  • You are incorrect. His daughter was killed in a car accident, but he was not driving. You should probably check your facts better when posting about other people and their lives.

  • that's bullshit. bill's daughter died by herself, in her own car after drinking. get the story right asshole.

  • Bill Freaking Bonds!
