I am from the U.K... Our free healthcare is not perfect, but it is great. We here are proud to have free health care for everyone, rich and poor alike.

I happen to live in Canada and while health care here used to be very good it is like a 3rd world country now. 10 months for my dad to get into nursing home, 5 weeks for my mom's CT scan, 6 months to see specialist who knows how long for surgery. This is reality. I live it. This is the rule not the exception. Now I am taking her to a US Dr which she will pay out of pocket. I work in the US and have company ins which I don't want to lose. My Insurance Company has a new incentive by paying my Doctor an extra fee to make sure I know all the risks regarding my health. Extra to make sure we stop smoking smoking and lose weight, with advice for all our dietary needs. Once a year I am given a printout of a whole host of blood tests and advice how to keep well.
I am extremely happy with my health care and refuse to have an inferior service. But then again I live in the UK and the Insurance Company is the UK Government. It's Great!!

That's actually a really good thought, if the government ends up providing the Costco of healthcare and everyone's on it and loves it for a couple of decades and all of a sudden becomes too costly to continue and then what? All other insurance companies are out of business (Ralphs/Albertsons) so now what are you left with, it's worse than what it is now=my biggest concern. The government thought social security was a good deal in 1935 and look at it now, if that's an indicator then watch out.
The difference here would be that the "Costco" of healthcare would always be NON-PROFIT! That is the problem here. NOTHING will ever get better if there is profit in healthcare! Lives or money, that is the bottom line of what we have to decide here. What is more important?
If there is no profit there will be no supply. The problem lies with the people who do not live healthy lives. They eat processed crap full of chemicals. They stress out due to money. There are non-profits everywhere, even in the health insurance industry that do just fine. Yes, people need to live healthier lives. I agree that non-profit org. work, but they exist by choice. What you ask for is that the health care industry be non-profit by force under the demand and enforcement of the law against their choice. And by calling it non-profit you are inferring that there is no cost associated with it which is a bit off base. Just because you call it non-profit doesn't mean it doesn't cost us anything. MRI machines will be just as expensive and we will see that cost in our taxes and increasing govt deficit .
You are right, non-profits do make money. I worked for Johnson & Johnson for 5 years. We were able to buy their products at cost. A $10 bottle of tylenol cost me $0.80. I don't have the figures, but even if it is 2:1 (I would argue better than 10:1), the health care costs and insurance costs would drop proportionately, and that is significant.
non-profits still generate revenue like any other operation. The manufacturers of equipment still make a profit. Doctors still get paid. If you price fix such as max out doctors' pay or require manufacturers to sell X for $Y, then they will have no incentive to work thus decreasing supply.
Medicine should be a business so those who have the means can seek out the best care due to competition. You are trying to structure a system that caters to the weak and poor. If people would stop being lazy and read labels and eat healthy then health care costs would plummet and be affordable for everyone. Don't blame the system, blame the irresponsible people.

Yep, we agree here also! My father was very educated on the Social Security issue and I learned a lot from him. About 10 years ago he wrote a 1/2 page op-ed on the Social Security issue, and it was published in the Los Angeles times.
I do think the system can be improved though. I think the misconception people have is that ideally you shouldn't need health insurance to have health care, big difference. The costs of medical equipment, in addition to fees for services, are also outrageously inflated. This actually happened locally a few times. If one drug dealer shoots a drug addict and one man runs into a burning building and saves dozens or even hundreds of lives by doing so, which makes the front page of the paper? The murder, every single time. Who gives a shit about some dead crackhead anyway? Less oxygen going to waste.
Now that guy who ran into the burning building is a hero. I know I would save lives by NOT running in there if it was me

All the money we put into health care and that's all we can achieve? My mother waiting 6months for a CAT scan and 30% of Canadians don't have a family doctor.

But here's a super-simplified, condensed version: America is far more culturally isolated from Europe than your country. It also has an authoritarian strain to its culture, particularly in the South. To this atmosphere add decades of under education and anti-socialist propaganda.

Every reputable source pretty much disproves death panels because she was referring to a clause that was ALREADY IN MEDICARE. Obama pulled it out because he is trying so hard to be bi-partisan that he will bend at anyone's will.
No one is covering up the town hall revolts; if anything, they're being sensationalized for ratings (par for the course).
I could tell you why Fox is doing well in basic cable ratings, but it's irrelevant. Ratings do not imply factual correctness.

People do want healthcare reform but not Obama's plan. Obama and the Democrats are making a big mistake. Perhaps they do not remember when the Clintons tried to take over healthcare in 1993 and the Republicans took over Congress in 1994. According to Quinnipiac University poll, by a 72-21 margin voters do not believe Obama will keep his promise to reform healthcare without adding to the deficit. By 57-37 margin, voters think healthcare reform should be scrapped if it will add to the deficit.

I happen to live in Canada and while health care here used to be very good it is like a 3rd world country now. 10 months for my dad to get into nursing home, 5 weeks for my mom's CT scan, 6 months to see specialist who knows how long for surgery. This is reality. I live it. This is the rule not the exception. Now I am taking her to a US Dr which she will pay out of pocket. I work in the US and have company ins which I don't want to lose. This bill WILL eliminate private ins Obama said it himself

I believe we need to reform healthcare but not in the ways being proposed. Why do liberals want to pay for everybody, which includes rich people? Why pay for people who can pay for themselves? We need national health insurance for major health procedures and for people who cannot pay at all and that is it. First, history shows nationalized healthcare doesn't work. Second, there are reasons Congress can't come up with how to pay for this....it's impossible. Third, those bashing capitalism haven't done their homework. Read the percentages of American cancer survivors compared to Canada & England. America's are the best Fourth, there is no such thing as a perfect system...just the best. Finally, if you "give something away," no one values it. Look at public housing...

My Insurance Company has a new incentive by paying my Doctor an extra fee to make sure I know all the risks regarding my health. Extra to make sure we stop smoking smoking and lose weight, with advice for all our dietary needs. Once a year I am given a printout of a whole host of blood tests and advice how to keep well.
I am extremely happy with my health care and refuse to have an inferior service. But then again I live in the UK and the Insurance Company is the UK Government. It's Great!!

That's actually a really good thought, if the government ends up providing the Costco of healthcare and everyone's on it and loves it for a couple of decades and all of a sudden becomes too costly to continue and then what? All other insurance companies are out of business (Ralphs/Albertsons) so now what are you left with, it's worse than what it is now=my biggest concern. The government thought social security was a good deal in 1935 and look at it now, if that's an indicator then watch out.

If there is no profit there will be no supply. The problem lies with the people who do not live healthy lives. They eat processed crap full of chemicals. They stress out due to money. That's why they get sick. The problem needs to address the source which is people need to live healthier lives, but if they don't too bad if they die early because it is their own fault, not the system.

There are non-profits everywhere, even in the health insurance industry that do just fine. Yes, people need to live healthier lives. When you are broke, it is cheaper to buy food that is bad for you than healthy food. Shop around. Also, don't forget a lot of people get sick and get cancer and they lead very healthy lifestyles. I agree that non-profit org. work, but they exist by choice. What you ask for is that the health care industry be non-profit by force under the demand and enforcement of the law against their choice. And by calling it non-profit you are inferring that there is no cost associated with it which is a bit off base. Just because you call it non-profit doesn't mean it doesn't cost us anything. MRI machines will be just as expensive and we will see that cost in our taxes and increasing govt deficit .

You are right, non-profits do make money. I worked for Johnson & Johnson for 5 years. We were able to buy their products at cost. A $10 bottle of tylenol cost me $0.80. They mark up MRI machines at the same rate. Party should be over for everyone. I would feel different here if human lives were not at stake. GOP = Greed Over People!! Enough already!

Be careful what you say also. Many people rationalize living decadent lifestyles because of what you just said. I will correct your statement and say that the odds of getting sick or cancer is greatly reduced by living a healthy lifestyle. I don't have the figures, but even if it is 2:1 (I would argue better than 10:1), the health care costs and insurance costs would drop proportionately, and that is significant.

non-profits still generate revenue like any other operation. The manufacturers of equipment still make a profit. Doctors still get paid. If you price fix such as max out doctors' pay or require manufacturers to sell X for $Y, then they will have no incentive to work thus decreasing supply.

If everyone took the time to educate themselves on Medicare and the current reform bill, it addresses the costs and how we will bring them down. For social security, if they only spent that money for social security benefits, we would be fine. Too many spoons in the social security pot! It is actually criminal!

The fact that social security is mandatory is pretty unethical. The government basically says we are too incompetent to manage our own money so they take it from us for 40+ years and if you live to see 65 they let you see a little that, it should be a voluntary system to begin with, not one that punishes you if you don't pay into it! I do think the system can be improved though. I think the misconception people have is that ideally you shouldn't need health insurance to have health care, big difference. The costs of medical equipment, in addition to fees for services, are also outrageously inflated. Here, lack of controlling market forces operate.Remember when it cost a month's pay for most people to buy a PC? Today, computers are affordable and in almost every home. The free market works when undistorted by politics.
