He borrowed melodies but wrote powerful lyrics. Great lyrics in fact. Riff stealing has occurred in every type of music forever, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Does anyone really care that Stairway to Heaven was stolen from Spirit - Taurus?  No. I have never met someone that says "i hate Stairway because he stole the riff from Spirit"

@vaibanez17 Of course, "borrowing" of lyric and melody phrases has gone on for millenia. Classical composers 'stole' from folk tunes, and the folk tunes of one group usually 'piggyback' off of the folk tunes of another.

I just like to see due attribution of sources whenever possible.

Sometimes, though, songs come to you and you're not aware of who their 'ancestors" were.

Woody guthrie is great, and he's honest and true He has always been that way, so when he said He just steals music, IMO he says how most real musicians never get their chance, and someone else, middle class or even rich over-hear the tune and perform it and steal the opportunity.

Woody Guthrie once said that he just stole music. If you listen to his records maybe 1/8 of them are derived from carter family tunes. and lets not forget, carter family came 20 years prior.

Yes, in the 1940s, Woody Guthrie took this melody and turned it into "This Land is Your Land".

I was lucky enough to meet another person who remembered AP, Pat Hensley - his family is buried up on Mt Vernon with the Carter family. I also got a private tour of the few items that were not in storage. They are redoing the Carter Museum - his grocery store. Talked with his granddaughter Rita Forrester.
