@JUSXTREME96 hey kept the r32/r38 because there was no need to retire them r38 was 1 of the 1st cars to get retired by the r160 but the r32 is still around because right when they were about to get retired by the r160 the r44 got structural issues so they had to get retired. The redbirds got retired because the mta didnt have where to put the r142s cause they couldnt retire the r62/r62a from the 4/5/6 cause they were not even 20 yrs old yet so they had no choice but to retire the redbirds.
@JUSXTREME96 The r142 couldnt go to Corona at the time for the 7 cause corona couldnt handle it at the time but starting this fall the r62a start arriving back to the 6 with 80 sets to th 4 cause of the r188 order for the 7 the mta is convertin the 6s r142a with cbtc for the r188 so the r142a conversion's arent set for delivery till January of 2012 so the r62a start arriving on the 6 this fall then the 4 is gettin 80 sets of r62a's cause it has 80 r142a's with cbtc kits so thts going to the 7
@craziikid9 These trains bring back alot of memories of child hood in New York City. I remember riding the Redbird trains on the 2, 4, 5, and 6 lines during the 1990s. I remember how things were before 9/11. I remember visiting the Statue Of Liberty, Central Park, Coney Island, and the World Trade Center Twin Towers. I miss those days.
@craziikid9 New York City is not the same anymore!! I no longer live in New York City anymore. after 9/11 everything changed over there and across this country. The Redbirds were a part of my life and will always be a part of my life no matter what.
wow reminds me of pre bloombers, pre 9-11 days, when you could smoke in bars, drive down park row, put your car on the si ferry, drive the length of broadway, when walk/dontwalk signs actually read as such in english, and more people headed their warning, cigarettes reasonably prices, etc etc etc etc.
@queensplazasouth Before 9/11 everything used to be beautiful. I remember visiting the Statue of Liberty when I was a little boy. I also visited the Twin Towers observation deck in the 1990s. I used to ride the Redbirds to central park all of the time on the 2 and 5 trains. New York City was so fun back then. Now everything changed! I miss the old New York City.
@queensplazasouth I miss those times myself. I hate New York the way it is now. They dumped the Redbirds in the ocean and they are building the stupid Ass Freedom Tower that nobody wants. Everything is messed up.
Gave me goosebumps! havent been on a real subway car since 1997 when i last went home to NYC for vacation from puerto rico. ( I was 15 so i could not stay) but, i'm dying to go back. Great vid
@Glitch94 This was the real New York back then. The Twin Towers and the Redbird trains you name it! This was the real New York. The classical New York City that everyone loved.
I remember when I was a kid and my daycare took us on a day trip. We got to ride these trains (1990's). It was funny because the lights went out and we all screamed. Lol, good times.
man, i miss riding these things, i remember always riding them as a little kid on the 2, 5, and 6 lines...sigh..the new trains suck, theyre amazingly louder than the older trains, the other day, i rode a D train and then switched to a 2 train and the 2 was so much louder than the D! bring back the old trains dammit! D:
Nice movie on those Redbirds, I got to ride them myself on the 7, 2, 4, 5 and 6 lines. They reminded me of the CTA 1-50 and 6000-series and MBTA Boston's 0500 Blue Liners and the 01100s of the Orange Line
I found those trains comfortable when I was a kid (a little 3 month old baby) but seriously the red scheme was the best thing that I liked about it but yet the seating the C train uses and 1 was the outer layer if I had a wish it would be to get 2 trains back up in running litteraly take a train to history
remember 10 years ago when the redbirds ruled all IRT lines there are the most famous cars on NYCT the last time i rode on the redbirds was in 2003 the last year for the redbirds. Witch subway cars does anybody like better the redbirds or the R42,R142,and another IRT subway car witch it's has been in and out of service 10 years ago the R110b.

Why did they keep those stupid R32/R38 cars running for a long time? They should've kept these as they all were around the same age.

DANG. These old subway cars brings back memories. Growing up near the Church Ave 2 and 5 trains, i saw these things all the time.
They were noisy, sometimes smelly, never really cleaned, and god help you if you found yourself in a redbird in the summer and the AC wasnt working.
But nevertheless, it was fun riding with these cars.
