  • 1: Hunger Games

2: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

    3: The Labyrinth (Percy Jackson)

4: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

  • You should read The Maze Runner series, they're pretty good (Better than the Hunger Games in my opinion-and I like the Hunger Games) :)

  • Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Cherub, Twilight, Percy Jackson, Lord of the rings, Stephen King, Dan brown, a series of unfortunate events..... Not all from this decade but that's what's on my book shelf.. :D (FAVOURITE'S HARRY POTTER!)

  • YES! I knew that a book from the Gemma Doyle Trilogy would be on your list! I just knew!

  • I agree with you on the friendship issue. That's why I loved Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen so much as a teenager! The Kiterunner was amazing. I had to cry so hard when I read the part about the hospital! Everything just came together and aah. <3

  • my favorite book is "my sister's keeper"

  • i looove kite runner and the sequel 1000 splendid suns xD and the lovely bones :D(not the movie tho)

  • Thanks for making "The Historian" known to me. I got it from the library and am loving every page. Not too many books hold my attention like that.

  • Where is lotr in all of this ?

    it's my favourite cultbook

  • great list

  • I can't believe Stieg Larsson series wasn't n there...

  • YEs the Lovely Bones! :D I love that book! I've read it ten times already. XD

  • Based on the books you like to read and given your interest in race relations, here's a book I think you might like to read: Black Space: Imagining Race in Science Fiction Film by Adilifu Nama.

  • l o l

  • I love secret life of bees

  • The Secret Life of Bees is one of my favorite books right now. I'm not a HUGE fan of the writing, but the characters and plot were excellent!

  • I love vampire novels but dislike gore and horror...odd I know.

But Let the Right One In was AMAZING I couldn't put it down. I love book s like that. I loved it.

  • May I recommend Odd Thomas? Dead People, Adventure, Thrillerish and Humor. I love it! LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

  • read day by day Armageddon its really good zombie book

  • Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns? Same writer as the Kite Runner, which I also enjoyed but I feel like if you read the former it would've taken the ladder's spot on the list. Gawd, I love that book.

Never read no. 9 but I've always wanted to. At the very least, it'd make a good coffee table book. And I wasn't really big on some of the things in the GD trilogy, but what I loved about no. 7 was that I thought it displayed a whole lotta progress from the author. So I agree with that one too.

  • ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE WAS AWESOME!!!! Me and my sister love it. we were planning a zombie attack. lol

  • Jesus, was this the best 10 YA books of the decade?

    THE DECADE!?

    Jesus, who writes these things?

    Most popular, MAYBE.

  • Seriously?! Twilight was fucking number one!? Why were any of the books from Twilight even there?!?!?!

  • If you liked Kite Runner, give Aravind Adiga's White Tiger a go. My Dad borrowed it and then lent it to me, I thought I'd hate it, but I loved it! And Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones is beautiful. Also, if you want something really gritty and thrilling try anything by Kevin Brooks, but I recommend Black Rabbit Summer and Being above all others. AND also Before I Die by Jenny Downham is fantastic! It's a British book, as are the Kevin Brooks, but they're all amazing xxx

  • You should read The Book Thief by Markus Zusack. It was released in 2005. It is a great book and if i made a list like you did it would easily be #1. BTW Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is my favorite of the series. Does anyone agree with me?

  • What about Hannibal Rising?

  • That top ten list from USA Today is more like the top ten list for people who don't read ever.

  • zombies

  • i absoloutely HATE twilight. I am a subscriber of yours, and i realize that you are a very learned person, and you understand how much a plot is important to the book. But, twilight, new moon, ETC had NO plot at all. She made up (she meaning Stephenie Meyer) words of her own. It was terrible. she completely messed up the minds of teen girls. and messed up VAMPIRES.

  • Sorry, but I absolutely hated The Lovely Bones. I really had a hard time finishing it, and I read a lot. That could be just my opinion.

  • I saw that list. Those books are based on sales. There are better books out there to read. That list was all about quantity, not quality. Numbers 1 & 2 on your list were excellent. They affected me emotionally more than anything.

  • What college do you attend and what are you majoring in? A monster class sounds so fun.

  • @helloisitme1123 I go to Cazenovia College

  • I recomend a book for you to read because you said you LOVED harry potter. So do I. This book is called City Of Bonesby Cassandra Clare. It has everything you can read about in it, warlocks, faieres, vampires, werewolves. And shoadowhunters are the new thing i guess. You should read it its really good!! I hope you like it.

  • I recommend The Hanged Man by Francesca Lia Block. Read it once- - then read it again. It reads like poetry, but her work never lacks strong undertones and metaphors. She has a book titled Echo that ties in with Greek mythology, and there's also Violet & Claire that's plays on the old Hollywood glitz. They might be items only accessible through special order, but they should be at the library.

  • The DaVinci Code? I can't stand Dan Brown! I read Angels and Demons, but I had to stop reading it after he said the Rio De Plato was a major river of the old world. In South America. Obviously, how could I miss it.

    *headdesk*

  • oh wait nevermind my first comment, you already read the series by libba bray =) sorry

  • @titaniccuttee thank you dracula was amazing! and the stand and misery i didnt read the rest...but those three are the best

  • the fucking twilight ones!!! are you kidding me!!, i love the harry potter series, im actually obsessed, i would maybe have put like the series, the da vinci code was pretty good, you should read a great and terrible beauty, there pretty good i think, im not sure about historical errors cause i havnt read them that carefully

  • I'm sorry to say but The secret life of bees pratically killed me!

  • World War Z is EXTREMELY good. A must read for Zombie/Sci-fi book fans. Max Brooks is a genious!

  • A couple people pointed out that the list is actually inaccurate.

First off, the writer got the Harry Potter books misspelled and mixed up (Goblet of Fire being the 4th book, not the 3rd) and that Rowling's books still outsold Meyer... so Harry Potter should have still taken the Number 1 spot. The list also forgot to mention Stephen King, which I'm sure put out a few books that completely outsold Twilight--if not Harry Potter.

So yeah, take the original list to a grain of salt, Meliny.

  • I recommend reading The Thirteenth Tale. That is how a first novel should be like, in my opinion. It's written beautifully. ;)

  • This list is totally legit! Let the Right One In PWNS!!!!!!!!!

  • 10. Phantom of the Opera (yes, believe it or not, it was a novel! XD) 9. The Giver 8. The Da Vinci Code 7.Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire 6. On Writing by Stephen King 7. Morbid Curiosity 6. To Kill a Mockingbird 5. Frankenstein 4. Bag of Bones 3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2. Angels and Demons 1. The Soloist
  • 1. Morganville Vampires series (all of them are good)

    2. Sookie Stackhouse series

    3. Vampire Kisses (can you tell I like vampires?)

    4. The Hunger games

    5. Elipse (it's the only good book out of the four in my opinion because of the action in it and it shows Bella and Edward's true selfish characters. Thus making realize how shitty the series really is...still my fave book though...)

  • Read Thomas Pynchon, Patricia Highsmith, and The Dexter Morgan Novels

  • 1) Feed 2) The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing 3) Inside the Victorian Home: A portrait of domestic life in victorian england Books I've read recently but were written more than ten years ago... 4)Dune 5)Wuthering Heights 6) The Neverending Story 7) The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn 8) The Acts of King Arthur and his Noble Knights 9) Dracula 10)Momo
  • @TheManeatingchicken neverending story thumbs up!

  • @kelseyhm Yep love that book! R.I.P. Michael Ende

  • 1.A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseni (loved it better the Kite Runner I suggest read it if you didn't its a real tear gusher)

2.The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseni (is my second fav. book) (hated the movie)

    3.Rebel Angles by Libba Bray

    4.Fade by Lisa Mcmann

5.Blue Bloods by Melissa De La Cruz

    6.Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

7.The Forest of Hands and teeth by Carrie Ryan (its like zombies meet The Village)

    8.Peeps

    9.Dead until Dark

    10.Rumors

  • Number 1 was the Twilight book?

    *Shudder*

    That's horrifying...

  • One book I really love is "The Hollow Kingdom". I don't know if it deserves to be on this list, but it definitely deserves to be read xD

If the story of Yaxhiri was written in this decade, at least one of the books should be on this list.

  • I love the book The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. It got me thinking about society and it was one of the few books where I could not put it down and I just had to keep going. Its about a dystopian society where women have no rights and are treated as nothing more than "a womb on two legs". Partake the ending could have been a bit better but I LOVED it. You should read it sometime. Its one of my favorites :D I would like to hear your opinion on it if you ever read it.

  • Just got done watching the newest Harry Potter movie. Although its a great read, the movie was mostly...well...boring.

  • The Lovely Bones was your No2?

    Really?

It had no plot. A tell-tale way to spot a weak writer? They cant stop weirdly describing peoples eyes. Dont believe me? Try this sentence: Her eyes were like flint and flower petals. Or this one: She asked for coffee and toast in a restaurant and buttered it with her tears. Really? She buttered the coffee and toast with her tears? Or this one, this time about someones heart: Her heart, like a recipe, was reduced. What the hell?

  • IT has a plot, its just complacted to see because of how the story was written Its about Susie watching her family from heaving and seeing how it is slowly destorying itself after her death. I think it was a great read. However her second book was aweful.

  • @MelinaPendulum

Meh, I have to agree with thorne. I think the idea for the book was very original and a very risky nice idea; however, I feel the execution was iffy. I found that Susie's sister (name?) was quite a big Mary-Sue and she got very boring throughout the book.

IMO there was no need for the book to be as long as it was (around 100 000 words IIRC) The whole book could have been presented much better in about 75 000 words.

I guess it all comes down to opinion though!

  • Out of that list I only read Kite Runner. I thought it was good.

I liked Cormac McCarthy's The Road, but seeing as how there is a big gap between those who do like it and those who don't I can't really be surprised if it didn't make the cut. Or hey, maybe these books just interested you more. But yeah, I thought The Road was solid.

  • YES. Zombie Survival Guide. :D

  • I didn't read enough books from this decade to make a firm list but here are some of my most favorited.... 10.The Bourne Identitiy 9. Congo 8.Cujo 7. The Mothman Prophecies 6.Fight Club 5. Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire 4. Night Watch 3.Carnosaur 2. Wizards First Rule 1. It
  • I agree 100% with your list! Wow, the 1st list was pure and other sh!t

  • Two of my favorite books from this decade were Beautiful Boy and Tweak (they go together). I don't know if you've read them, but they are amazing. I still need to read The Lovely Bones, though.

  • That list was crap. Yours was much BETTER!! I mean they are catering to fan craze and that's all!!!

  • I want to read the Da Vinci Code, and I read all the Harry Potter books.

  • i think they were being totally bias as too whats "famous" at the time then actually looking into book that are actually good

  • Twilight?

Okay. It's obvious those were taken from polls online. It has to be. Just.. no. They def. took what was most popular. Ugh...

....how is this possible?...that actually pissed me off... Humanity, you SUCK. -_-

*re-reads LTROI and The Historian* *facepalms*

  • Twilight was #1? Wow, that's sad . . .

  • Love the Gemma Doyle Trilogy!

What the hell is Twilight doing on the number one up there?

  • I see Sesshomaruuuuu xD

I just found your video's and I must say I love em' ^w6

Especially your opinion on Stephanie Meyer lolol

  • Since you like vampire books, I have found a trilogy by Nora Roberts, which is a Celtic look on vampires. It's called the Circle Trilogy. I've been such a huge fan of Nora Roberts and her works that I literally have all the books she has written up to this point, and plan to collect the ones that come out this year.

  • The Lovely Bones got bad reviews, apparently. Then again, it was on Wikipedia. I'm gonna see it anyway. I wanted to review it for my school paper.

  • Notice how all the books on the USA list are the most popular titles. You judged on the actual content of the book, not how many people loved it. Not saying that the Harry Potter books weren't good; JK Rowling kicks major ass. But they're were better written books.

And the Lovely Bones was an amazing book. :)

  • I wonder if this list on usatoday even is about the "best" books. It seems to me that it is about the most popular books....and good and popular don't always go together. What really bothers me is that none of the great non-fantasy/teenage books of this decade are on this list. I love Harry POtter (I don't like Twilight) but the books are nothing compared to other great prose I read this decade.

  • I didn't realize that Let the Right One In was a book--my brother bought me the movie for Christmas, and it was really badly dubbed so it kind of grated on my nerves, but I liked the story and the characters. I'm definitely going to have to look up the novel now.

  • I didn't really like "Let the Right One In", though it's been a while since I read it. I put it down right at the climax, and never picked it back up, which is never a good sign. x_O It also struck me as needlessly grotesque, like the writer was going out of their way to be as disgusting as possible. I definitely agree about 'The Lovely Bones' and 'The Prisoner of Azkaban' though. The big reveal at the end just blew my mind.

  • Well it is a vampire novel. It's supposed to be grotesque, but then again I do love gore when it is in the right genre and I felt it made sense to have gore. Also it is Swedish books and their views of violence and gore a probably different from american ones.

  • I don't have anything against gore, usually...But it wasn't even vampire related gore and disgustingness. It was random not-adding-to-the-story stuff. But that's not really what bothered me most about the book. It's more the fact that the grossness is the only aspect that really got any kind of reaction from me. For the most part I was bored, and didn't care about the characters at all. That's how I abandon the book right when the main vamp was in deep shit. (Again, my personal opinion)

  • if you get the chance, you really should read Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett. its a really good book.

  • @hipplz12312 and the historian is good! i have it and i've read about half of it. thumbs up from me

  • Yes! All awesome books! Not just ones that won the popularity contest! By the way, have you read Anansi Boys? It seems like the sort of book you would like. it's about the sons of the trickster spider god Anansi dealing with their heritage.

  • Zombies. Anything with Zombies is AWESOME.

You WILL be getting a video response.

  • This list is full of crud! I love Harry Potter, but one or two books on the list would suffice. None of the twilight books even deserves to be on the list.

  • I had my jaw hanging from the list that the usatoday came up with .. I mean did they just put in the books that made the most money? even if that is true The Da Vinci Code made a lot more money than twilight .. they might have been too lazy or read a lot of crappy books in the last 10 years

I think you're list is waaay more valid .. I agree with most of what you put up in your list

  • I would have included pretty much anything from the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett (it's hard to pick because there's now about 37, although they don't have to be read in any particular order). It's a satirical fantasy series, and is definitely the smartest and most humorous set of books regarding the genre that I've ever read. If you enjoyed Artemis Fowl and The Princess Bride I can strongly recommend them.

  • @ACompanyofSwans yea! another fan of the disc world! i just read the third one and i think it was great

  • I know, Terry really deserves more recognition. It's so sad that he has Alzheimers now . . . believe me though, the books just get better and better as he gets more into his writing style.

  • I'm reading Let the Right One In (Låt Den Rätte Komma In) right now actually, in swedish ;)

  • Love the Da Vinci Code (even though I'm not Christian) and The Lovely BOnes. Your school makes you The Lovely Bones? Lucky. My school makes people read stuff like Great Expectations (hated that book).

  • yours is way more accurate. You should makes these lists.

  • Sweet Far Thing FTW!!!! Oh god, you don't know how happy you just made me. That series deserves so much more attention than its been getting (I blame Twishite); Gemma Doyle is what Bella WISHES she was

  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban came out in the 90's unless I'm much mistaken.

  • 1999...i made a mistake

  • It's OK. The guy who wrote the list made mistakes, too. Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets were made in the late 1990's.

  • I didn't like the ending of The Lovely Bones. The whole going into that girl's body and having unprotected sex with her high school crush was a stupid thing to do while she could've done a million things on earth. And I think the killer got off easy, killing him was too nice.

  • Who's opinion was that list at the start based on? I'd like to know.

One of my favourite books would be 'Inventing Elliot' by Graham Gardener. All I thought the ending was a little too open ended. I'd like to know how everything was resolved. If anyone else has read it, please tell me what you thought of it.

  • Have you read Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet? It is amazing I reccomend you read it.

  • aww no the road by cormac mccarthy ;(

  • I've been really craving some new reads, and Melina makes a video about her favorite books of the DECADE! I trust you to be a reliable source to know if something's good, (I've known now to not trust general opinion on many things), so I'll check if my library has any of these. Thanks Melina!

  • Melina, as my passion for writing grows so does my passion for reading. Your taste is the same as mine, so I value your opinion, and Ill check out some of these! I do have a book recommendation for you, perhaps you may find it interesting. It's a bit of a stretch from the genres both you and I usually read. It's called Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. It's about a girl that killed herself and how she is letting people know why. Really unique stories and sub stories, look it up, I loved it

  • I recommend Terry Pratchett. He's one of my favorite writers.

  • Have you read the comments yet on usa today? Oh, the lulz!

  • Oh, and woo! Let the Right One in FTW! And the ending is sooo satisfying *literary orgasm*.

  • Mine are all books you've likely never heard of, but I'm willing to explain why I like them.

1.) Eon the Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman

    2.) E.E. Knight's Age of Fire series

3.) Erin Hunter's Warrior Cats (Nostalgia)

    4.) Harry Potter series (self-explanatory, I suppose. ^^)

5.) Dragons of Argonath by Christopher Rowley

6.) Guardians of Ga'Hoole (No explanation for this one.)

    7.) Pride and Prejudice

8.) The Giver by Lois Lowery (I get a lot of crap for this one for some reason.)

  • I've heard of 3, 7 & 8.

Ming you my list is only books from the 2000's

  • @MelinaPendulum

    I figured you'd know those ones. I'm more of a fantasy girl; I'm sure you've noticed the word "dragon" showing up a lot. ^^;

  • I love the Giver!!!

  • How could ANY of the Twilight books beat Harry Potter on the list?! My top 10: 10. Inkheart 9.Diary of A Wimpy Kid 8.The Lightning Theif 7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 6. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 5. Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix 4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 3. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince 2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Yes, I'm obsessed. Don't judge me! xD
  • Could you please do a full review of The Historian?

  • I am going to but the lovely bones tommrow and am really excited about reading it = )

  • I like the Twilight books, but I don't think it's the best books of decade. New Moon and Eclipse were good, Twilight was quite boring, and Breaking Dawn was god awful. I think Vampire Academy should be on the list. I loved that book. I'm on the second book Frostbite. I also like the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod books. I really enjoy Eigth Grade Bites. I couldn't put the book down.

  • the list must have been based on sales. but as everyone knows, popularity is not the same as quality. I can't take that three books of the Twilight series are in that list!

  • I don't really like Dan Brown's writing, but other than that I totally agree with this list. Other than "Way of Shadows", "Let the Right One In" was the best book I've read in a VERY long time.

  • Oh hell yes, I read "Let the Right One In" and couldn't put it down! It was amazing. I was so happy to see it was as your number one.

  • I know it's not of this decade, but can I recommend you read the book The Giver? It provides an interesting look of the future of mankind and such.

  • HOW ON EARTH COULD TWILIGHT BE THE BEST BOOK OF THE DECADE. Whoever wrote that list must be pretty prejudice to other books, or must be obsesed with Harry Potter.

  • It's not. The article was talking about the best SELLING books of the 2000s. That's actually worse because it proves all of America is tasteless, not just USAToday.

  • Twilight? Best book of the entire friggen DECADE???

Who the hell wrote that sorry excuse for an article?

  • PoA it´s amazing, i like angels & demons better than the da vinci code, but my favorite of the decade it´s probably "the thirteenth tale" by diane setterfield, it´s just a great book for book lovers.

  • Of topic...but OMJizzle at your Danny Phantom poster! :D

I've done a ton of reading this past decade and have sorta fell off in the past 3 years. :( I'll tell you what though, I'm a little upset that USA Today let Harry Potter and Twilight dominate that list. Yeah yeah, they're popular, but c'mon now...even though I have tons more respect for Potter than most other "best selling" crap. *shrug*

  • "Let the right one in" at 1st place! My heart is singing with happiness

  • I loved all your picks, I've read them all and enjoyed them, but one i want to add in is called Cathy's Book. It is very unknown, but it is very unque. It is a Role Playing Game Book. Now what i mean by that is, the book comes with a packet of evidence that leads you along with the book. You can hold in your hands the main character holds and it is GREAT. Plus the story is very realistic and understanable. I recommend it.

  • Sad to say, I haven't read most of those books. *adds to "read" list*

Have you ever read the "Outlander" series?

  • I love Harry Potter, and I definitely don't think that all of them should be listed.

I liked your picks, but to offer some books of the decade to you I'd have to do quite a bit of research through my bookshelf. I read too many classics this year to sort out the good recent ones, sorry!

  • I don't know if Persepolis was based on a book but it seems like it was. If you liked

The Kite Runner go watch the movie: Persepolis. [its animated]

  • @necronomicon009 I am 89% postive its based off of a Graphic Novel

  • I figured it was adapted from some kind of writing. Its narrative screams written material.

  • the only reason i say Graphic Novel is because i own Persepolis. it could atapted from a Bio, but i own it as a G.N

  • Want me to post a video about my picks?

  • Thats up to you I wouldn't mind. :)

  • I love The Lovely Bones, The Historian, Let The Right One in, and POA. I am so glad I got The Historian. I haven't finished it yet, but there's something about it that makes me want to keep reading.
