  • for anyone saying that this piece is garbage and that he can't play worth a shit, i would really like to see you go out there and put on the same presentation

  • Balls to all the crappy comments...he is just tooo good!

  • fail piece is fail...

  • Drum Corp isn't always about how pretty the music is. Sometimes its something just to show off with.

  • He's an excellent player, but this piece just sounds disgusting.

  • @TheKingOfTheTwilight This piece's tonality was designed to represent chaos.

  • Why do people get mad/jealous about other people "winning"? Just except the fact that THEY won. They aren't gonna win everytime, everyone always gets there own chance so just congragulate them and be happy for them. If you were the winner, you wouldn't want people talking about you badly... By the way, I love 3:09, just saying.

  • You people piss me off so much. This guy worked on this on his own time there is never any time that is given to work on i and e solos. People bitching about how I and e are never perfect obviously have never done drum corps.

  • That guy was my teacher :D

  • If you want to ridicule the marimba this has got to be the ultimate tune. Add some leftover clothes from the Batman tv-series (I guess the Riddler refused to wear them) and you've got a winner.

  • @icthruu4evr

  • I thought this solo was actually very good. Sure, everyone misses notes, especially under pressure. And sure, there were few dynamics, but this guy is very talented and I would bet that many marimba players wouldn't be able to play this solo as well as he did for the time allotted.

  • If that won then... Wow. That was terrible. Bad marimba, bad solo, bad accuracy, no dynamics, terrible choice of mallets.... Come on. I'm sure circumstance came into play here. But folks, don't beat your marimba. It didn't do anything to you.

  • now everyone's a fucking critic

  • very technically challenging. Musical expression left much to be desired

  • Great job on this solo! What kinda board are you playing on? It sounds VERY kelon... This might have sounded even better on a better marimba. Either way, screw all these haters; you have killer chops, or you wouldn't have won. Keep it up!

  • @felixhelix420 I agree, the marimba sounds TERRIBLE. This would have sounded AMAZING if it had been played on a rosewood marimba. What a shame.

Anyways, screw all of you haters, this guy is awesome. If he had been able to work on this for more than 2 weeks, he obviously wouldn't have missed so many notes.

  • Leigh Howard Stevens grip right there...

  • Alight everyone, now that life has slowed down a bit for him (and actually had the money to buy a camcorder since his 1st MA is a bit on the expensive side..lol), he has been able to post a couple of more vids. Keep in mind he is just messing around in these.

Do a search for gnoted since youtube wont let me link to other videos

  • Ok the musicality in this was very different but you are very talented and I think maybe the wrong notes weren't actually jus wrong, maybe to a person that doesn't read alot of mallet stuff it is but it really sounded like a lot of key changes and chord inversions. But nice job man most def!!

  • Didnt particularly like the music, BUT it would take an enormous amount of skill

  • Beast.

  • I enjoyed it, but I am bias probably, I marched BK lol

  • I prefer softer mallets, but there's no denying the skill. Nice performance.

  • i can do that to ding dong ding ding dong loud ding soft ding dong high piched ding dong ya i win 500 thousand dolars ya for me !!! ow that hert my ears

  • @lmao642 Kill yourself.

  • @lmao642 yeah i'm pretty sure you will never be able to do that...

  • @lmao642 go jump off a cliff. That ain't easy.... AT ALL

  • @lmao642 oh my god. get hit by a car.

  • @lmao642 you have no idea... are you even a marimbist?

  • @lmao642 im a percussionist (mostly drummer) but i also play vibes/marimbas every now n then...and let me tell you, they are NOT easy at all. especially not when you go around playing w/ 4, then its even more of a challenge. you are an idiot and i hope you get brutally smacked by a semi truck transporting marimbas for the actual marimba players who could kick your ass on them. have a lovely day

  • @lmao642 dood this is not easy i play the extended orchestra bells dats hard this is twice as big an i bet he hit 96 percent o da notes on da key board so dis ain easy ill beleive u wen u put up a vid an u du better dan him but otherwise jus kno it ain easy

  • for the haters out there it was actually really good so if you cant play like him then i think it'll be best if you just keep quiet :/

  • Whats funny about all this to me, is that some of ya'll are still complaining 4 YEARS after the fact. Face it, Frank won in 2006. Eitherway, he is on to bigger better things. Back in April, he was a featured soloist at the Kennedy Center. He is also completing his masters in performance and is going for a second masters in conducting next fall. And to top it all off, he is getting paid darn good money to clinic and judge around the country. How many of the haters out there can say that?

  • I can wack a marimba with my mallets too...

  • @zwigoose bullshit u try holding 2 mallets in 1 hand and shifting them each time u hit new notes. fucking ridiculously hard, i know because i am the 1st chair in my percussion section, and it took me forever just to get the hang of holding 2 mallets in 1 hand AND hitting the same notes over and over. i'd like to see you try doing that nub.

  • @drakethekool56594 Calm down..... its not THAT hard.... whats hard is using the technique to make music, hitting notes in harmony.... it doesnt matter if you have the grip if you cant make music using it

  • And jmcbr600, for the record, the judges were buddies...

  • Dude I dont care if he missed notes. Thats AMAZING! Im learning Polaris right now by Mark Ford. So if anybody has any pointers, feel free to message me. But GREAT JOB DUDE!!!

  • holy shit just bought the music to this and its crazy ill guess ill save it for next years juries lol

  • wtf just happened. how is that possible

  • Different but i like it!

  • i don't know if it's the recording, or my ears, but it sounds ....almost metalic for some reason....the dude is rockin, but i think my ears are sensitive right now.

  • Is this in the 12 tone scale? If not, it sounds atonal.

  • i had one of these when i was little

  • @mylaser91 i sincerely doubt you had a Marimba when you were little.... maybe a xylophone, but definitely not a marimba

  • @tydydpony93 sincerely, who gives a shit...i think i clicked on this by accident anyway, stupid ass

  • @tydydpony93 no but i had ur momma when i was little her tit was good, pussy smelled though

  • @mylaser91 lol, if you're into that kind of thing man.

  • i love it, not all marimba pieces are supposed to be all cute...

  • lol I like the vic firth advertisement at the end!

  • dude y'all down there are crazy... the song is awesome.... mark ford is a damn genius, dont be jealous.

  • Bastard!

  • I'm sure this guy is good but I can't tell because the song choice is absolutely horrible. It sounds like a cat playing with wooden wind chimes.

  • Needs more Steven's grip.

  • blue man group so much better big time

  • dynamic contrast who gives a .... its fine

  • Idk why everyone hates this piece and thinks it's ugly. It's a ridiculous solo and he did an amazing job! Well done.

  • I think he's got a hard on when he's playing this.

  • lets just say it's his style and it doesn't seem easy at all

    good job !!

  • for all those whining about lack of dynamic contrast, note that all youtube videos undergo heavy compression.

  • he could use lessons

  • my God no musical value at all just rhythmic chords and runs

  • i partially agree with you...there was no significant dynamic variation, and absolutely no phrasing- just loud. The reason being this is for DCI---they focus more on chops then musicality.

  • @chenwenhua2269 ya that makes complete sense thats why he got DCI marimba champ

  • oh dam!

  • @chenwenhua2269 he got champ cuz hes the best skill-wise. i would much rather hear someone play chopsticks on a marimba than hear this but i would give this guy the trophy because hes obviously a beast. dont hate the player, hate the song.

  • Excellent work, for sure. But I feel like he should have a softer mallet for the bass notes. When he goes down to the lower octave he gets a lot of really high overtones and it sounds more percussive than melodic. If that is what the piece calls for, then I'm totally off the mark, but if not...

  • @seanrosenberry yeah that's the point of the solo i believe.

  • I disagree about this track being disgusting. If the audio was of good quality I'd remix this into something really odd.

  • the music isnt that bad. don't know what people see in it thats bad

  • well it has been said before, he's performing good and his technique is very advanced without a doubt... yet the piece just SO sucks ass.

  • he's a monster but it sounds disgusting

  • the

     music sucks

  • He is an excellent player, but this music is so ugly.

  • Does that have four or five octaves?

  • five by my count

  • five octaves

  • look at his right hand at 1:47, amazing!

  • then do us a favor and look at the competition requirements regarding the time limits and how much time you actually get to practice this while still having to travel and perform for your drum corp

  • Besides being abrasive, all the beautiful musicality is robbed from it due to the break neck speed and cuts. The actual length is about 10 minutes. If you thought this was good, do yourself a favor and find the recording by Mark Ford to hear what it's supposed to sound like.

  • If you find it, I'd be glad to be an un-biast judge!

  • Ahhhhh love this. I need this sheet music.

  • The guy is clearly really good, but the abrasiveness of the board/mallets added to the wrong notes still limited my enjoyment of the piece...

  • as hard as that may be..its still sounds like a little kid just hammering random notes...

  • hahaha

  • just crapped my pants

  • haha right

put that video up and ill believe you

  • sure

id be inspired to see that

  • Note: sorry, apparently my comments did not go underneath the comments who they were addressing.

  • epic...

he's actually our high school's front ensemble instructor this season, didn't see this vid until after band camp but he's a cool guy and very good at what he does, obviously.

  • @goonggoong HAY ALEX WAZZUP.

  • He was one of my schools 2 percussion instructor and CHS marching band will miss him.

  • He was one of my schools 2 percussion instructors both from DCI Frank we will miss you!

  • This is what madness must sound like. But I like it.

  • mallets r kinda hard on the low notes... i hate synthetic bars

  • They aren't that bad if you have the right ones.

  • @alancheng12345 yeah i didnt even know adams made a synthetic marimba for 5 octaves

  • Marimba solos don't seem as exciting as battery solos; but I can't fathom how he has that much skill

  • I love the way he's not even looking half the time where one hand is striking even when he's playing massive intervals, he's literally insane...

...in a very good way of course. :)

    Rock on Franky!

    woooo!

  • Do you think you could pass off this song on a 4 octave marimba?

  • no, you wouldn't be able to get the same sound as you would on a 5.

  • nope it requires the low E

  • no.

  • C-VILLE pit instructor for 2009-?

    so excited

  • I haven't heard a single missed note in this performance so far.

  • the double lateral section was incredible

  • Talk about ignorance...

  • maybe he's just listening through crap speakers...

    ...or crap ears.

  • is that a 5 octave marimba?

  • sure looks like it

  • its a monster! i want one..

  • No, it's not. count again.

  • 5.0 ;P

  • I was saying no to PladLake's comment. It's a five for shure. I forgot that replying to a reply on Youtube makes people (me) look stupid sometimes. My bad.

  • I'm looking for sheet music for this song. If anybody knows where I can find it, PLEASE tell me!

  • its movement beyond by mark ford

you can buy it off steve weiss

  • dude in DCI u write ur own music so its his tempo, and dynamics.

  • ahhhhhhhhhno

that is written by mark ford

yes it is faster but the dynamics are the same and he did not write it

however the tenor and snare stuff is original

  • he didnt write this. it says in the description that its written by mark ford. if you were actually a well-educated percussionist you would know that.

  • he got first place so i guarantee you everything he did had a purpose behind it.

  • agreed.

  • Okay, let's get a question that has nothing to do with the music (damn good player though)...........does his last name end in an 's' or a 'z'. Frank, which is it?

  • It ends with a Z...officially that is.

  • He's good.

    I just don't like the piece. =P

  • It sounds so weird that I couldn't tell if he is playing a wrong note or not.

  • Well, look at how he plyaed. He played like he knew what he was doing. Therefore, its safe to assume, he knows what his doing when playing this piece. He played it with confidence, something many players don't pick up upon quick enough. Doesn't matter if he missed notes, hes giving the aura of "I'm a bamf, i did not miss a single note". Thats what you want. I enjoyed watching this a lot. And, hes doing a solo. so, if it sounds good, thats all that matters (well, almost all. ha)

  • I've the score: what he plays is a "good" variation of that piece. And the performance... speed is not all!!!

  • Hey Jmcbr, i would like to see you with a big trophy from this competition. Do you have one? No.

  • OOO 1:20 he hits a resignator yuck

  • lol... resignator =/= resonator.

  • Ya that lol

  • Yes. because he definitely took his mallets, and hit the resinator. (sorry for sl\pelling) which is located underneath the bars. NICEEEEEE.

  • This has a taste of Joseph Schwantner in it. Awesome piece and awesome performance!

  • HEY JOHN!

its alex coming into say your a fricken qwarish qweer

  • sounds like he is raping windchimes

  • i didnt know adams made 5 octave synthetic marimbas, they sound like poo

  • its mainly used for marching sounds alot better than yamaha or dynasty

  • well duh. didnt bk switch from rosewood to synthetic in the middle of the season this year? the sun must of killed the keys....

  • Are those judges high? This is definately a horrible sound.

  • lol innovative solo means its very abstract. but very hard techniqe wise.

  • that's the problem- this isn't an abstract piece. It only sounds like it because this guy hits so many wrong notes and can't play it in time.

  • dude i went to school with this guy i wanna see you attempt this piece or even a grade below it and knock it off..... he a great player as well as composer

  • I've played this so I know wrong notes when I see & hear them. If you knew anything about this piece, you'd know he didn't play two correct notes in a row for 50% of this video. The first 4 notes of each phrase are D, D, G, A. He plays D, C, then whatever random notes his right hand misses. He only won because the judges (and obviously his buddies) aren't familiar with the piece and didn't recognize how terribly this was performed.

  • Comment removed

  • you're retarded. they work on these solos for a majority of the season. just because the contest is in finals week doesnt mean they dont work on it before then.

  • Actually, he didn't work on it till about 2 weeks before the competition. I know cuz he's my little brother. And for everyone wanting to know, he knows he missed notes. He walked out of that room and called me saying that he blew it. And jmcbr600, for the record, the judges weren't buddies...

  • @varuna03 Go Frank. Missing notes, little imperfections... All part of the glory of music. Never stop.

  • well its definitely a hard piece but thats not saying much. Music wise its a pretty shitty piece and really hard to listen to especially with mallets that are way to brittle and a shitty marimba. And yah, those notes are fucking random too. Mark Ford isn't a composer, he's a percussionist/ composer... those don't count unless your steve reich.

  • This seriously won?! What a hack. No sense of time, touch, musicality... barf!!! If you ever heard the actual recording of Mark Ford performing this, you'd be disgusted by this.

  • ugh... after a 2nd listen. Wow. He misses almost every opening note. It's supposed to be a d minor chord. Oops! He's totally nervous and doesn't play anything in time. It's supposed to have an actual 7/8 "groove" to it, not just rushed through like madness. DCI judges are on crack.

  • that marimba sounds like shit especially with those mallets...fuckin drum corps lol

  • you can bitch to mark ford if don't like the piece.

drive yourself down to UNT, where he teaches marimba at one of the best percussion schools in the nation.

you don't get a signature marimba line for writing random notes, kids.

  • Actually, I can think up many reasons why it sounds "harsh." These marimbas absolutely need to be heard outside during DCI shows. In addition, much of the time, the mood of the music is supposed to be purty harsh and "busy."

  • I'm not real familiar with all of Adams models, but that sounds ringy like a sythetic bar marimba, which would explain the high harmonics and harsh sound. The mallets definitely don't help either. This guy does have some good chops, but unfortunately Drum Corps teaches people bad mallet techniques and to overplay the instrument.

If that is a rosewood marimba, he's beating the hell out of it.

  • well i think it's because of the fact that they have to beat the bell out of it so the people in the back of Krum stadium can hear them!

  • Drum corp does not teach to over play, but to play with more velocity. there is a noticable difference. and with playing like that all season, when you suddenly switch to a concert style/setup of playing, your bound to be in awkword in betweens.

  • I played marimbas in 5th grade... And i still play em'. It's fun....

    And yes I want a cookie. >.>

  • If you don't like the mallets then complain to Vic Firth who sponsors Blue Knights. If you don't like the piece then complain to Mark Ford.

  • I don't know what y'all are talking about, that was awesome.

  • what a horrible piece.

  • u should listen more music.

    need pratice.
