this mouvie took place in thermopile in the real place.. with greek soldiers as spartans and persians.. i watched the film live.. with hundrents of citizens.. real historical facts
Spartans, If standing in long thin lines, each line away from the other, they would be the single most useless team of soldiers in the face of the earth. Just a few arrow and they would be dead. Battle formation is more im[portant than other facts because it was the center of their way of thinking, of which Phallanx is also a metaphor.
Yes, just some things were far more accurate in the modern version. Of course all charachters and facts are adapted for the Comic and Movie, but at least they do not show them standing in useless lines like sitting ducks, in silly battle formations.
Well whatever, but the Phalanx technique as depicted, and the "Push" are more accurate than any movie so far. For those who know "Pagration" the Anchient Greek Martial Arts, most of their team fighting makes absolute sense. So do not pretend to be the expert on all fields.
Those are Chalcidian and Attic helmets. The Corinthian helmet fell out of use by this time in Greece. The Italo-Corinthian helmet was in use still, but mostly in the Italian peninsula.
These battle formations in this movie are so far from the truth. poor directing. The modern version is a bit exaggerated but pins down the actual battle formations and the famous "push" tactic which was the very essence of Spartan technique. Spartans never fought in lines. That looks like the american civil war without the muskets.
300 wasnt trying to be historically accurate, it was more trying to be like a comic book which they based it on which in turn was based on the real event hence the colouring of the film and the inclusion of monsters
i think 300 (new) was trying to be historicaly accurate, there were quite a few accurate things, aristodemus, fighting at platea at the end but the "Immortals" were entirely the dreams of an american film ant the corpse wall never could have happened at they cleared them away at the end, together... that must have been strange seing mortal enemies helping clear away corpses(im not quite sure there is alot of contravercy because of the vague texts)
you may be right. however this 300 was greatly historically incorrect. the spartans did not use the hoplite formation in this film. they did not fight in 2 lines, cavalry can easily destroy that even if there are spears. lying down on the ground will just get you trampled upon. so technically these two movies have something in common. the persians are messed up idiots without common intelligence
I don't know whats worse, the 300 phalanx, or single rank phalanxes in this movie. At least in this movie it's not a pointless blood bath- like 300 was..
Yeah right, only the battle ground and formations are totally inaccurate in this one. The modern version had much better battle research behind it. And if you do not like bloodbaths do not watch movies about very well known bloody massacres. Try another genre.
Ya I know what hell was those costumes? But if figures in realty the movie is based on comic book and not on history but many people think that the battle was actualy like that XD.
Those costumes in the 300 scared me away initially; because they looked a bit fruity. When I finally did manage to see the movie, I enjoyed it a lot largely because of Gerard Butler's performance: "THIS IS SPARTA!"
not only corithians, but Thebans too. It is a nationalist myth that there were only 300 spartans there. They were more than 5000 greeks. But at the last day only spartans and thebans keep there, the thebans just change their side and became Xerxes allies - to same greeks became a spartan, persian or atenian´s vassal make no difference lol.
It's not a remake, it's an adaptation of a famous comic based on the same story. And 300 is a very good movie, albiet unrealistically exaggerated in some parts.
In some parts? The Spartans had no armor, the immortals looked like samurai and the rhino, come on. And Xerxes looks like a damn fool. It's like putting the germans in pink dresses with f-14 jets and saying saving private ryan was a good movie.
What's so unbelievable about the rhino? The Persian Empire covered more than just modern day Persia, they could have gotten it from one of their conquered lands. The movie's just in a different style, it's meant to be raw, bloody entertainment, not more realistic, like the old movie. The only thing I thought was really dumb was how all the immortals were apparently goblin like creatures.
it was like being told the story from a greek. all the scary shit and weird things were like somebody telling the story of the confrontation with the barbaric, sorcery empire of the east. also, there were not animals at they battle of thermopylae. the movie should be seen as the one greek's tale to the law body, full of very bad guys and very horrifying creatures. get it now?
The "persians" will be wiped out by neutron bombs the next time!

I dont even want to bother telling you why

actually that's pretty much what they wore, red cloak, tunic, chest armour, round shield and dori(spear)
themanfromhell24 in reply to Blazethebest (Show the comment) 2 years ago 2
@themanfromhell24: It's the helmet that makes the Spartas too Roman. They should've used ones with long face guards.
akosigundam in reply to themanfromhell24 (Show the comment) 2 years ago
i ddn't notice that. yeah, the helmets are nothing like the corinthian ones. they are exactly like roman helmets

right, those old props and costumes had been used many times in those sword-and-sandal movies.

They were shot in Southern California on a budget. Oh, well.

The old version, 300 Spartans, was historically closer than the new version 300.
The new version made me ill.
Not even close to the historical values like the first movie.
The "HOT GATES" in Greece was a bottle neck keeping the Persians at bay till the Shepard sold them out.
They Force Marched there in unbelievable time to be able to prepare for the invaders.
It stopped the onslaught of the Persian invasion of Greece just long enough to save western civilization.

Yes my fellow Greek, but the old version has screwed up all the battle formations and tactics.

True, but at least they have breastplates, nt topless like in 300
Duckzilla123 in reply to ImperialGuard9001 (Show the comment) 3 years ago 2
In reality I dont think they had any breastplates made of iron or bronze, they had rather something construcked by linen.
HCnyling in reply to Duckzilla123 (Show the comment) 2 years ago
They were made of bronze... Every spartan hoplite had them... Don't think so - have a look in the historial armor books... Or hoplite ammunition....
Duckzilla123 in reply to HCnyling (Show the comment) 2 years ago
duckzilla is right thats just a way of making the spartans more brave looking in 300(new)
eggybread2409 in reply to Duckzilla123 (Show the comment) 2 years ago
To me seen them going to battle is pretty much like going to modern battle with no Kevlar protection - so its looks more stupid rather than brave!
