  • im going to do my best swan dive

    into shark infested waters

im gonna pull out my tampon

    and just start plashing around

  • One of my favorite songs ever. She is such an amazing woman. What a poet, her songs have a healing power for me. Love u Ani xo

  • Man I love love love love this live version. She plays to the crowd for a lot of it but then there is part where it is just her and the song and there's a quiet part that becomes bigger than her dreads ('Im cradling the heaviest part of me'), makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. It is a beautiful song. She is an incredible guitarist & performer & writer.

  • One righteous babe! Am I wrong, or is this song the most poetic explanation of bravery that has ever been written? She is a true profit!

  • I don't know who I'd be if I hadn't been introduced to Ani DiFranco those many years ago.

  • @summertizzime: I totally agree. She helped me through a dark period of my life 11 years ago. I need her more now than over.

  • this album saved my life, not in an i was about to commit suicide kind of way, but in a hey someone else gets it too kind of way. it changed me.

  • Amazing

  • this is one of the best ani performances- hell, one of the best performances ever, of all time. you can hear the fucking pain oozing out of her voice, her words. i think ani might have been going through a hard time personally here.

  • THE BEST GUITAR ARTIST EVER

    NO ONE COULD BE BETTER

  • @jarvez1000

I agree with you....yes she is articulate and expresses herself in a very individual way...But my Goodness!!! Does everyone overlook what an amazing guitarist she is? She has amazing skill and has a style all her own. I'm glad I was a teenager learning guitar when this album came out! As a female it inspired me to experiment and love the guitar even more. It still does.

  • @Bellatuppy

    Not everyone, trust me.

  • She should set this to music.

  • pull out my tampon and start smashing around

  • Now that's cutting edge artistry!!! To hell with playing it safe and being trendy. You're hot because you make what's hot not following some mindless trend. I dig it!!!

  • and i've got a lack of information but i got a little revelation and i'm climbing up on the railing trying not to look down. i'm gonna do my best swan dive into shark-infested waters. i'm gonna pull out my tampon and start splashing around. cuz i don't care if they eat me alive. i've got better things to do than survive. i've got the memory of your warm skin in my hand and i've got a vision of blue sky and dry land.. <3 <3 !!!

  • Wow.

  • So I used to blast her in the car while in the commute on the Bay Bridge...and sing along...until I saw someone looking at me like I was totally nuts and annoying...so I stopped....☺

  • @TheMelissaNakama and I (and probably Ani too) am/are so disappointed in you stopping.

  • look again the guitar is now diamonds

  • Every song is her best . . . because she's an evolution and she's been here for centuries.

  • ani defranco is the bestttttttttttttttttt ever

  • And I teeter between tired

    and really, really tired

And I'm wiped out and wired,

but I guess it's just as well

Because I built my own empire

out of car tires and chicken wire

and I'm queen of my own compost heap

and I'm getting used to the smell

    <3

  • @VirtualPolygraph I tweeter between FaceBook andYouTube...

  • AMAZING- one of HER BEST SONGS!!!

  • my ex wife introduced me to her in 98 and ihave yet to fall out of love with her.

  • This song says it all. It speaks about the mystic's experience in this world. At least to me it does!

  • Comment removed

  • i love her, but as a male, i have been reflectively abused by the very gender based atrocities that she appears to rail against....just by the other end.... I still love her though,,,it helps me to try and understand what i am not percieveing from the other gender point of view. Females of my species are so beautiful and wonderous

  • What an amazing artist. Its hard to desribe what I feel when I hear her music. Something in me comes alive, something deep down that is subdued. I want to run & smile & cry. The sadness, the joy, the love, the rage. I am a strong man, I don't show my emotions, but I lose myself for a moment.

  • Im a big fan OF LIVING IN CLIP. oNE OF MY FAVS.

  • Ani Difranco (the first album), Not so soft, Imperfectly and Not a pretty girl are perhaps my favorites - if i have to choose, but she's amazing all over - her more recent stuff is also worth listening to - lyrically you find treasures all over her discography ... just start somewhere :)

  • I found my way here from HD Tracks Press and her site from there but the samples of her were too short. (u-tube, here I come). Apparently I am out of the loop, ignorant of what's out there. I had never heard of Ani Defranco 30 minutes ago... She is amazing! Can a Ani-Fan list her four best albums???

    Thanks !

  • For a newbie, I recommend in this order (1) Not a Pretty Girl (2) Little Plastic Castle (3) Dilate (4) Knuckle Down. Or you can choose her live album Living In Clip for a sampling of her early-mid 90s work.

  • @HastieBusiness I would really recommend Dilate and Little plastic castle.... also revelling and reckoning is a beautiful record. :) have fun.... ani difranco is a great artist... youll love discovering all her music.

  • this would be a lot better without all the pre-teen feminists squealing in the audience.

  • those pre-teen feminists may be squeeling....but at least that wave of the movement ain't so quiet.

Most of our wave crashed on the glass ceiling shore and are too busy fighting daily in corporate land to prove something to themselves. Some out of obligation.....some out of feminist dogma.....some because they're exhausted.

  • i really dont think I could go a day with out listen to Ani..she inspires me so much. She so amazing and kick ass.

  • you are the best

  • well said pegleg...couldn't of put it better.

  • Ani is one of those artists you won't listen to for a year and then you find an album under your bed...and she takes you back to that same powerful and scary place within yourself that you maybe forgot about, but never left you.

She can articulate things most people can't even isolate. She's one in a million :)

  • I don't think you could have described the way she makes me feel any better... except that I don't think I've actually gone a full year without listening to her haha

  • Hah there's a meerkcat on a show at Animal Planet named PegLeg. Not in a bad way :D

  • @pegleg747 amazing, beautiful summation. gave me chills.

  • @pegleg747

    well said

  • @pegleg747

my god, couldn't have said it better <3

  • @pegleg747 im one and a million lkke you

  • i just heard of her a few weeks ago from my cousin.

    this is amazing.

i have really, really never heard anything like this before.

  • you're in for a hell of a journey...keep listening..there's lots of music she's put out, and lots of versions, lots of songs, and most of them are awesome, and there's probably more coming! it'll change you inevitably. in a good way.

  • its a shame the world is constantly evolving. i wish everything stayed exactly the same all the time. permanent 1994.

    bleghhh to saintdameon

  • yeah but I think it comes back around and sometimes better than ever...sometimes evolving is good too.

  • i was being satirical. and responding to saint demon.

i guess comments on the internet have no context so....

    permanent 1994 would be hell.

  • yeah um, I am a very intuitively oriented person ...meaning I get a lot of meaning from people through seeing body/face language and hearing tone of voice.but I do not usually get sarcasm over the net with just typing...sorry.

  • its ok i wasnt trying to be mean. i just didnt want you (person ive never met) to think that i was agreeing with such a stupid statement. :)

  • it's a shame she doesn't make albums anymore like the ones she made in the mid-90's.

  • gosh...shes amazing

  • this is awesome!

  • "gonna go ahead and go boldly

cause a lil bird told me

    that jumping is easy,

    falling is fun,

right up until you hit the sidewalk

    shivering and stunned."

    ani's a genius.

  • @stupidcircusclown im the little bird

  • Little Plastic Castle. My god. WHAT A RECOOOOOOOORD!!!

  • it really is, I remember when I first got it and I wore it out. I would play "gravel" and "as is" over and over and over. :)

  • Utterly Amazing!

  • amazing.

  • utterly amazing. i can listen to this version over and over. the voice, the guitar, the emotion -- i can't help but be moved by this performance.

  • I will always continue to be amazed at the way she can make a guitar and a bass sound like a whole orchestra of strings. What a titan Ani is.

  • i love this song! one ani's best right here

  • i love this dvd. ani rules my world

  • Fucking amazing...pure epic.

  • Awesome live and original.

  • Damn! That made my nipples hard. Her accomplice is exquisitely attuned.

  • brilliant

  • the memory of your warm skin in my hands...the one thing I truly understand

  • She's such a fanstastic live performer. As much as I enjoy this music off the album, I appreciate it so much more seeing it and feeling it live.

  • that was the coolest performance of swan dive i've seen so far. amazing. especially the last bit.

  • p.s. i love todd. todd's bass work is just so atmospheric and, for lack of a better phrase, amazing (L)

  • awesome, really cool off beat rhythm

  • I just want to say something about the awesomeness of Ani for actually working the oppressive nature of the tampon so eloquently into this female power ballad. I love that all genders can enjoy her music and ideas. However this song is like the womans anthem to me. If only we could all be the naturally beautiful animals we were born. Fucking, loving and bleeding everywhere.

  • It's a great mentality to have... but modern hygeine standards would tend to disagree with the concept.

  • shes singing in metaphors

  • love,

it's a word that comes close to my heart when hearing Ani

  • i love how its powerful and desperate at the same time. at least to me. "i just want to get my feet wet till i drown", it all sounds like honesty as well.

  • nice....she sounds great

  • loveeee it!

  • This is from the "Trust" DVD . . . it has some of the best live versions of her songs I've ever heard.

  • fuck all of you posers.Guys only say they like ani to score with chicks.

    lol

  • I am so in love with her.

  • everytime i watch this, it amazes me more

  • She's the most laid-back chilled singer/ songwriter I can think of and her lyrics

are just amazing! Great music:) P&L,Anne

  • @2:52, she looks so tiny with that giant guitar!

all hail tiny girls with tons of power :)

  • lol, actually, its a normal sized guitar, she's the tiny one :)

  • Usually I don't like female singers, they just seem a bit fake and whiny to me. But Ani is just plain amazing. Nothing fake there...

  • There are so many good one liners in this song. The tampon line, the line about the ship pitching and heaving, and a little too much to drink. I'll go on and on if I have too......just wanna get my feet wet, until I drown....

  • love this!

but i dont know why people is so shocked about the tampoon line, its a perfectly normal thing...

  • She puts so much emotion into her songs.... I'm not her biggest fan, but her dedication and the honesty truly astound me still.. I can't say many artists out there are in any way similar to her, she doesn't just sing her songs, she FEELS them every time.

  • It's the "swan dive into shark infested waters" that makes the tampon line. There are literal y hundreds of artists out there saying things just to be shocking. She's a master

  • Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....xxx

  • I Like this video very meaningful

  • This may be my favorite Ani song.

  • I'm a man and I do not think that TAMPON is a bad word.

  • what the hell? at least she has the gut to say that and still show her face, that takes courage that most people dont have, at least give her some credit for what she does!

  • why, what are your reasons.

  • heyy this song rox!! all the way ani!!

    love u sarah

  • lol, awsome song! luv u 2 charlee

  • Awesome! Totally f**king beautiful! I haven't heard this song in a long time, and this video is just a beautiful example of how ANI DIFRANCO ROCKS!Beautiful!

  • Ah.. one of the perks of living in Europe: I've seen Ani in concert half a dozen times, most of which from the front row.

    She's simply amazing.

She f***s up the lyrics in this one quite a bit, but it only adds to the charm. :)

  • I love her. THis is one of my favorite songs but this is the first time I have had the privledge of seeing her singing it. I get to see her in June! I am so excited it is sickening!! :)

  • one of the only people who almost sounds better live.

  • shes soo into it.. i love it

  • damn !!!!

that was unbridled passion at its zenith

  • She is like that through the whole show! She is a singer songwriter!!!

  • "I've got better things to do than survive"

    Sing it Ani.

  • i was there! she was amazing!

  • perfection at its finest.

  • Damn, I love her. She's so free spirited, outspoken, a beautiful spirit. We need more strong women like her. I would love to see her live.. It would mean the world to me.

  • to see her live would mean i could die happy

  • no words. just absolutely no words. Ani, Ani, Ani, thank you.

  • Speaking of how she does evolve, when i saw her in concert, her encore was evolve. And it's true, she changes, but each time for the better, and how can we not love her for it? She's incredible..

  • First time I ever saw Ani play this tune was when she opened for Bob Dylan at Blossom. (Cleveland/Akron) When she mentioned pulling out her tampon, the jock-y security guy separating the lawn from the the pavilion turned around to us and asked "what did she just say . . .?"

  • I have seen Ani live several times, and she is so awesome, that no matter how many times you see her, it is never enough because of how much she evolves... I love this woman!

  • This performance was much better in person.

  • "I'm gonna pull out my tampon and just start splashing around"

one of the best lines ever

  • aniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • one of her best

  • she's the one

  • hands down best version of swan dive

  • nah the live version from that double disc live CD is so much btter! is amazing!!!!! rle get it! the whole CD is just awe inspiring!!

  • the 930 club sucks...but she don't.

  • Long live metal..this song is cool by the way..\m/
