This video brakes my heart. I am a bat biologist and this was a sad reminder of how misunderstood and hated bats are. I hope the people swinging brooms and signs at the bats got arrested for animal cruelty. These bats could live over 20 years and are really smart, caring parents. I have 2 problems with this. The first is obvious, the inhumane treatment of the bats. C'mon people, there are better ways to remove bats than making sport of them. These are mammals with highly sophisticated sensory systems.

I am a 3rd year student here at TSU. There were bats in that same lanier east dorm freshman year which would have been 2005. The dorms were infested with bats and they had been there for years. I am amazed to see how some of you people are so quick to look from the outside in and judge these people for their actions. Comparing them to serial killers and asking ridiculous questions such as would they do this to puppies is just ignorant.
No, it's ignorant to make a DIFFERENCE between bats and puppies or any other animal! Taking a life is just WRONG and those animals didn't do anything wrong, so why is it okay to kill them and even make fun of it? I think EVERY life should be protected and maintained and we should use our 'higher intelligence' to PROTECT animals and not to KILL them!
I feel as though you all value the life of bats just as much if not more than the life of these students. These animals were in these students living area. The students didnt go bat hunting. Also in the dorms no one has been bitten or died, but many kids have been sleep with bats in their rooms and bieng exposed to bat saliva can be a cause of rabies, and about the whole rabies situation, no one has been diagnosed with it but many students has gotten a vaccine for it, like myself, and if you knew about rabies there have only been 39 cases since 1990 in the U.S. but each year 16,000-39,000 people are vaccinated for it so someone dying from it is improbable.
And about the animal controll, they were called. But the only problem with that since none of the residents wanted to pay for the expenses, either the dorm or the adminstartion invested into a company that only sent one person every couple of hours just to clean up ad sem calm. To us their presence was not neccicary. And yes the bats have been their for years and it has been reported before but the school and the administration never did anything about it until the videos were shown on the news.
Okay. To try to end this whole little situation. Okay yes I am a student that was living in the dorms at the time of this bat dilemma, we (bieng the students) understand it was in some way inhumane, but with us not bieng used to living with bats in the vicinity, like me bieng from chicago I am not used to seeing bats around where I live, we did what we could to try to live calmly.
The students were not given a place to leave and go to until the University saw this video and shut the hall down. Yes killing bats isn't nice. But when it's cricket season or ant season I'm sure one would do the same thing. One would also expect the university to remove the bats in as humane a way as possible. These students did right in exposing the situation although the bats didn't have to die.
Also, in the past 5 years at that dorm, has there ever been a case where a bat actually bit someone and they died from it? If that had happened, the university I think would have definitely done something about it. Since they didn't, that means nothing serious ever happened with the bats and there is probably no threat from them.
I wasn't implying anything like that. The rabies thing is way misunderstood. When someone is bitten by a bat, very rarely was the bat carrying rabies. Most of the time, it bit because it felt threatened and was in self-defense. Again, in this video, the bats for the most part were flying in circles in that intersection and looked like they were trying to find a way out.
But what your not realizing is that we've people before us who stayed in the dorms 5 years ago had this same problem but you wont be satisfied with us killing bats until somone is bitten and dies from rabies right!!!

I am not here to debate whether or not the actions of these individuals were cruel. Rather I believe the focal point of the argument lies in the fact that the students of TSU were failed by their university. A university should provide housing that is both safe and sanitary, which the university failed to provide the latter. After many failed attempts to get the university to address the matter the students of TSU were left with no other alternative, but to rid the dorm of the bats themselves.

I have 2 problems with this. The first is obvious, the inhumane treatment of the bats. C'mon people, there are better ways to remove bats than making sport of them. These are mammals with highly sophisticated sensory systems.

I am a 3rd year student here at TSU. There were bats in that same lanier east dorm freshman year which would have been 2005. The dorms were infested with bats and they had been there for years. I am amazed to see how some of you people are so quick to look from the outside in and judge these people for their actions. Comparing them to serial killers and asking ridiculous questions such as would they do this to puppies is just ignorant.

I feel as though you all value the life of bats just as much if not more than the life of these students. These animals were in these students living area. The students didnt go bat hunting. You all make it seem as though they just went into a cave and began swinging bats. Serial killers go and find defensless creatures and make them suffer. They wouldn't bite unless you clenched the creature in your fist, if at all! It would only flutter like mad to get loose. Even exotic 'vampire' bats do not bite. They use a prolonged tooth to make a tiny cut & lap a couple drops.

Also in the dorms no one has been bitten or died, but many kids have been sleep with bats in their rooms and bieng exposed to bat saliva can be a cause of rabies, and about the whole rabies situation, no one has been diagnosed with it but many students has gotten a vaccine for it, like myself, and if you knew about rabies there have only been 39 cases since 1990 in the U.S. but each year 16,000-39,000 people are vaccinated for it so someone dying from it is improbable.

And about the animal controll, they were called. But the only problem with that since none of the residents wanted to pay for the expenses, either the dorm or the adminstartion invested into a company that only sent one person every couple of hours just to clean up ad sem calm. To us their presence was not neccicary. And yes the bats have been their for years and it has been reported before but the school and the administration never did anything about it until the videos were shown on the news.

Okay. To try to end this whole little situation. Okay yes I am a student that was living in the dorms at the time of this bat dilemma, we (bieng the students) understand it was in some way inhumane, but with us not bieng used to living with bats in the vicinity, like me bieng from chicago I am not used to seeing bats around where I live, we did what we could to try to live calmly.

The students were not given a place to leave and go to until the University saw this video and shut the hall down. Yes killing bats isn't nice. But when it's cricket season or ant season I'm sure one would do the same thing. One would also expect the university to remove the bats in as humane a way as possible. These students did right in exposing the situation although the bats didn't have to die.

Also, in the past 5 years at that dorm, has there ever been a case where a bat actually bit someone and they died from it? If that had happened, the university I think would have definitely done something about it. Since they didn't, that means nothing serious ever happened with the bats and there is probably no threat from them.

I wasn't implying anything like that. The rabies thing is way misunderstood. When someone is bitten by a bat, very rarely was the bat carrying rabies. Most of the time, it bit because it felt threatened and was in self-defense. Again, in this video, the bats for the most part were flying in circles in that intersection and looked like they were trying to find a way out.

I am not here to debate whether or not the actions of these individuals were cruel. Rather I believe the focal point of the argument lies in the fact that the students of TSU were failed by their university. A university should provide housing that is both safe and sanitary, which the university failed to provide the latter. After many failed attempts to get the university to address the matter the students of TSU were left with no other alternative, but to rid the dorm of the bats themselves.

Bats are valuable members of our ecosystem, and feel pain, fear, and panic as all mammals including humans do. These kids are barbaric and ignorant, and faculty at TSU should use this travesty to educate the student community about appropriate behavior as well as about the benefits of bats to our enviornment.

If the students had not opened the ceiling panel, the bats would not have entered the interior of the building. I suspect they were hoping to get out of classes or a test with this stunt.
Bats are no more a vector species for rabies than humans are. Without Texas bats eating borer moths, farmers in the rest of the country would be spraying insecticide on their crops.
The reaction of the students to the bats is no more appropriate than the court response to the Jena 6. It's 2007. Grow up

actually less than 1/2 of 1% carry rabies. You are a million times more likely to get rabies from a dog who messed with a skunk or raccoon than a bat. This isn't about a health hazard, this is about students having absolutely no compassion and about blatant cruelty, it disgusts me and so does anyone who thinks this is acceptable. Read something on bats someday, don't say things about them when you have really no idea.
