I didn't understand how big could be the difference in feeling between two different master interpretations... First I came at Lang Lang's due to Youtube, and finally I've arrived here... My God, my heart knows really well which one belongs to eternity. Thank You Mr. Richter
This comes across as better than Pollini's, even with the low sound quality. Not that I disliked Pollini's. But when Richter plays it, you can hear why Liszt loved this piece so much.
@alienalienss I hear and know exactly what you mean! I just heard a good friend of mine perform the whole thing for a master's degree recital; a balance between Liszt and Schubert is paramount with this!
Various performers interpret differently according to their teachers. Most people have a different outlook on most things, force, dexterity, textural interpretation, feel and touch with the composer, etc, but can any one performer really understand EVERY composer, and interpret.?
Interesting how different this sounds with Richter from Brendel. Masculine and fierce with the great Russian, lyrical and melancholic with the great Austrian (while it sounds a little sterile with Pollini).
I like both Richter's and Brendel's Wanderer, but its Brendel's version that I would take to a remote island.
mortadela84: Actually, the first performance I heard of "The Wanderer" was that of Pollini's. Afterwards I later heard of Richter's during a recording session of the work. Shortly afterwards he died. The interesting thing about this was, at the time, I was praying for his soul salvation. I'm believing that he made it in.
"The interesting thing is..." lol, actually, that's the least interesting thing. It's very generous and kind of you to pray for great Richter, but you make is sound like his soul was at the fate of your mercy, and that if you didn't pray, he for sure would have not gone to heaven. You must be a great saint to be so sure that you hold the responsibility for the salvation of human souls.
In that case, pray for me also, please, otherwise, there's not way I'm making it in myself.
NeoMalikov: I don't know why this happened, but it happened before. There are some people that relate to it because they said that it happened to them. I am not saying that I control the great Richter's fate, only God does that. I trust that God Himself would show me the reason for it. God has confirmed to me before that people entered into heaven through dreams, visions. I am an ordained Minister of the Gospel with an anointing. Sure I will pray for your salvation. All the best.
Thank you for saying this...these people want to corrupt music with religion. Next they will talk about Christ being the savior...arrghghhhh disgusting.
Good point about God but they think they know and we are Godless! we may all be godless after all.
@nevertheless123 I agree. Unless it's an actual religious work by Bach or something, I don't want to hear about "God praises this work" or any of that crap. Schubert and Richter were geniuses on their own accord and by their own personal achievements, not because of some mythical figure in the sky.
@Sinfoniette What a load of utter nonsense. Whilst I accept difference in opinion, it's laughable that you think you can criticise on the composer's behalf.
The greatest Wanderer ever. 'Best' does not make it. The thing that makes this Wanderer so great is that it has just the right amount of 'Schubert' in it, like the perfect amount of spice in a foie gras.
Lang Lang is like a modern SLR camera, really contrasty but artificial; Richter is like an old summitar lens with the parfum of the 40s.

WOW! The hungary this is better than richters hungary recordings, in which he plays an A bass note in the first G Major chord, (still good though)

Yeah Lang Lang, you need to get with it. Lang Lang's playing bothers me.

This is phenomenal and very similar to Pollini's rendition.

Heh, you think just because you prayed his soul was "saved". Freakin ludicrous.

If Richter didn't get into heaven, then there can be no such thing as heaven.

And if truecrypt didn't get into heaven, it would be god-darned hard to get into heaven.

Would you stop with your religious propaganda? Take it somewhere else! This is piano music.
Oh, and BTW, you don't know if there is any god, no one does. ;)
