Avalon has been identified as a town now called Glastonbury in England. The plains around the town used to be flooded and was in the middle ages a lake. The town itself covers three large hills that would have been islands a few hundred years ago. Check it out. There's some crazy stuff that happens there. The grave of King Arthur is said to be there.
