@VendavalEste Well, I mostly like the old art style better. Granted, this does look good moslty by virtue of being an OVA, but even modern OVAs don't look as attractive.
@nindroid47 Hey, cheesy eighties' anime was also ultra-violent and ultra-awesome, and they didn't have cliched pretty boys or sparkly girls. They were so hardcore, even the OVA series starring 4 chicks (Bubblegum Crisis) would show people getting shot to pieces and getting their skulls crushed and stuff. If only those days would come back for anime.
@VendavalEste I was trying to say that anime studios haven't made anime like this since the notorious pedo rapist had made anime with blood, gore, and open sexuail themes on prime time look bad for kids in Japan...but nvm.
You gotta admit, even though this anime doesn't get many positive reviews, it's still a classic nevertheless. And besides, it's rather unique in the sense that the main protagonist is not the typical hero or antihero that most people would probably expect. But rather, the main protagonist is the villain, and the hero is nonexistent. But that's what makes this unique from everything else; it's about a badguy and his quest for personal revenge.
Damn perfect. Every time a clip of Geists' head flapping in the breeze is shown, another raider boss gets his head stabbed. Thanks for doing your part.
I've listened to this song on psp a couple monthes ago and it felt very inspiring listening to it :). Now I need to see if there are any. M.D. Geist means. Oh, and what does the M.D. part mean?
I don't care what the critics say, M.D. Geist is a masterpiece, They keep whining about the plot and they fail to see what this was meant to be, Geist was never supposed to be like that, It's just a kick ass anime. Geist was very popular in the VHS era, I remember seeing this when i was 4!.
Four?! Fuckwin childhood, you might like some comments I made about this in a review that's on my website, in particular, I mentioned how it succeeds in being the antithesis of anime at the time in regards to normal conventions.
It's not for everyone, but I fucking love M.D. Geist. Don't expect a very deep plot, but do expect 80s manliness and cheesiness, if you're gonna watch it, make sure you watch the Director's Cut in Japanese, the dub is awful. I have uploaded the 1986 version, but it has a problems, mainly with how it's not very refined, and I actually prefer the comic version. Regardless, Geist is awesome.
I'm hip to the ridiculously cheesy manly anime. Sacrificing plot for robotic manslaughter and dudes taking bullets to the face like it ain't no thang is alright sometimes.
And don't worry, I would never bother with an English dub for something like this. Once they butchered the Hokuto no Ken movie, I was done with that nonsense. But yeah, director's cut, I'll remember that.
I can understand why most people wouldn't like it. M.D. Geist is one bad son of a bitch. Damning an entire planet to extermination just so he can have something to fight? Whoa!
Still, it was totally worth watching. Even if he is an amoral bastard, he is nonetheless a magnificent one. It's a nice break from black-and-white "good guy kills Satan" motif most anime of that time played off of. I just wish it was longer. Is the sequel any good?
He's also a hell of a lot better than the other immoral. The sequel is good, but it isn't the same as the first, and it suffers from having fairly slow animation, but at least the artwork is consistently excellent. The main problem I have with the story is that the story it's trying to tell is too big for 45 minutes.
I would have liked to have seen more focus on the struggle of the humans, how Geist sees what he's done to the world as one big hunting game, the corruption within the mixed armies, and how the antagonist seems to want a religion around himself. If you scratch the surface of the sequel, Geist ironically becomes the hero, but that's only if you really look into it using what little evidence it gives you, it's why I wish it was a bigger story. I wrote an article on Geist that you may want to read.
Dude, totally. If you wanna hit me up with that, that would be awesome. Geist is at the surface a fairly one-dimensional character, but the closer you examine him, you begin to see that there's more to him than just killing anything that moves. I'd be interested to see what you've come up with.
It's cool, I got your message. Very good article, I largely agree with your analysis of Geist's character and it was really informative with some of the behind-the-scenes stuff that was going on.
And I got around to watching the second OVA. I actually really liked it. I do agree with some of your criticisms, like the crappy animation in some places. Still, the fact that Geist took the world he damned and DAMNED IT EVEN HARDER is just so awesome to me.
People never really seem to mention music in a lot of things, though I see what you mean. I love both OVA's soundtracks, they're unique, but I think the first one gets more points from me.
Manly as fuck.

@nindroid47 Ah, it was so much simpler for me to fall in love with this, I'd say newer anime has to do that in its struggle to make me like it.
