and keep on chug'in. One thing Alco had that even GE and EMD dreamed of having was a fast load up time and hard pulling power from the moment the engine man notched up until something broke or the hill was climbed. Alcos pulled harder than any EMD locomotive and even modern locomotives dont pull as hard as an ole Also Century series.
I don't necessarily agree that they could outpull modern units, but they definately have that mechanically simple, brute force charm. If a dash 8 is a precision rifle then a c630 is a big rock on a catapult.

6V92TA, you do realize that all those trains use electric motors for the traction right? So how is the Alco train going to have better pulling ability than the GE's or EMD's. It is like you are saying the electric motors in Alco's are stronger than what are used in GE or EMD trains.
The dont call them Diesel/Electric locomotives for nothin dude. An jus so you know, GE, EMD and Alco do not use the same traction motors. Also, if you do your research, you'll find out that Alco has the fastest load up time of any locomotive built at that time. Meaning......when you throttle up, you get full electric power to the traction motors quicker than EMDs and GEs. This equals into better pulling power on command.
Yes I know the traction motors are different, But the Alcos used old outdated series-wound motors which have nothing on the 3-phase induction motors in terms of raw torque. Maybe back then before accurate torque control of 3-phase motors became possible, but thanks to VFD, 3-phase AC induction motors now outperform DC motors in terms of torque. I mean you cannot honestly think it would stand a chance against a GE ES44AC do you?
If u want struggling, write in "indian alco", theres a wdm4 trying to climb hafalong hill or something, pure driver torture, notch 8 at 2 mph, wheelslip, power down, then up etc.
That engine sounded perfect. Low RPM's are where their power is.

That's an oft-repeated myth Harvey. Get your facts straight instead of repeating lies.

Anyone who thinks that's 'struggling' doesn't know ALCO's.
The best diesel loco ever made.
They'd take that for hours,

I have seen ALCO's take a flogging no diesel-electric engine should be asked to endure.
Between GE amd ALCO, they were INDESTRUCTIBLE!

An ALCO M640AC would out drag a GEVO. Only one made, wish ALCo would have survived into the 2000's.. Think of the brutes we'd see today.

I'm sorry that that doesn't sound like struggling to me. Normal sound for ALCo 244 prime mover.
