I saw 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' in the theater in 1982. As soon as the Main Title started to play, I just knew that the movie was going to be a really, really good — and I was right!
2285. The most realistic portrayal of mankind in Star Trek... with cool ships that actually look metallic.
The old Khan, imprisoned both within and without, is like a parallel of a man of potential, fed til youth with positive equalitarian Neo-Renaissance ideals - only to have later found them all to be a failing societal self-delusion that in actuality only serves to benefit others...
@Spionsilver WAIT WHAT? how can you like this great piece (yeah i also like it and several of james Horner's other works) and not like star wars soundtracks??? especially the ones from episode 4-6. star wars music is certainly not less great than this one. i don't want to offend you but if you are familiar with film music i don't get how you could write this. john williams and james horner are both outstanding composers.
@megupati hehe i did not say i dislike starwars soundtrack but this here(i mean the complete soundtrack for Star Trek II+III) is far better..everything else would be a lie:)
Best moments in the Star Trek films. TMP - The end credits. TWoK - "KHAAAAAAAAANNNN" TSfS - Stealing the Enterprise TVH - "Do you like Italian" "Yes" "No" "No" "Yes" TFF - Fan dancing TUC - Enterprise and Excelsior vs. Chang's Ship Gen - Enterprise vs. Duras' Ship FC - "Watch your future's end" Ins - Enterprise vs. Son'a Ships Nem - Escape from the Scimitar '09 - Narada's Destruction & Escape from the Black Hole.
''...I shall have him! I'll chase him 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and 'round Perdition's flames before I give him up!''
Horner does an excellent job with the Demon Scale, It really captures Khan's Mental imbalances... dramatic, tragic, slightly campy.... but mostly angry and blood thirsty
I remember going with my folks to see STII...when Spock "died" in the simulator, my mom kept asking "Is Spock dead now?" I didn't say anything (because I'd already seen it) except, "Just wait, you'll see."
@kb7rky I saw this movie when it debuted in late spring of 1982. During the part where Spock died, I seriously doubt there was even one dry eye in the theater. The greatest Star Trek film ever.
The thing I really love about this whole soundtrack is that it was meant to evoke the old naval adventure films set in the 18th and 19th century, taking into account Roddenberry's comments on "Horatio Hornblower in space".
@bukkler That's probably the reason it's so addictive of its own right. I've become a cynic since I first saw Star Trek, but this still makes me grin. That outrageously hopeful music must be stirring some part of me that still has hope for the future.
There are still some greats as far as movie soundtracks. The Lord of the Rings soundtracks are beautiful and really take you away. Unfortunately they are the exception, not the rule.
And the following year yet another MASTER PIECE of cinema musical genius exemplified well in the 1983 film Krull - James Horner - Thank You for making my childhood gratifying via the cinema world with your mind mystifying prowess in musical brilliance! I wish I could find a single mid/late twenty something female that loves Star Trek of whom is ready to settle down and together we can travel the stars where no man has gone before and live long and prosper all in peace!!!
Up until the 80's and early 90's most sci-fi/adventure and even action movies considered the soundtrack as an integral part of the movie, usually with orchestral soundtracks. For some reason, in many of today's scifi/adventure/action movies they prefer loud, electronic/hip-hop/rock music that make them look like you are watching an MTV video instead.. sad. I bet that in 20-30 years few if anyone will bother listening to the OST of "The Matrix" for example, or even link it to the movie.
@billstpor Agree with your comment about Matrix sound track. But I think that the fantasy and sci fi still care about their sound tracks. I Hate the bad cyber punk sound tracks though. TRON for ex. Those that don't include good sound tracks risk being dated and forgotten like so many strange 70s films. I think the best period for music was 77 to 97 for sound tracks. Now the whole industry paradigm has changed though. A lot of sloppy work and bad taste. Bad story telling. And a lot of bad taste.
@billstpor it´s too bad that there are those soundtracks like you´ve explained... the orchestral intros are much better, full of emotions and not only one beat... they are changing... aw, just wonderful :) I like these orchestral versions more because I hate hip hop and other types of music that sounds that way... it doesn´t belong in a film...
@billstpor Hitchhikers Guide, Star Trek (2009), The Dark Knight (does that count as sci-fi?^^) and The Golden Compass have a great score in my opinion. But you're basically right, the Tron Legacy OST sucks for example.
@billstpor The main reason for the modern electronic & rock soundtracks is likely budgetary; symphony orchestras and composers are very expensive. Another possible reason is that young people today seem to be generally dumber than they were 30 years ago, and perhaps can't comfortably process symphonic music as well as could previous generations.
@selatik1 I think the latter is probably truer between those two. Considering the obscene amounts of money given to the main actors, the equally obscene amounts of money reserved for CGI, or the money spent on marketing and promotion for the picture, I'd say the cost of hiring a decent composer and an orchestra has to be relatively cheap by comparison. Much more so if we are talking about $100-150M productions...
@nonamebrand0 hey, don't diss Commando. Horner pulled off action music with ease with those tropical percussions and synthesizers! classics like 48 Hours, Commando and Red Heat wouldn't be half the movies without his scores.
If you watch ST 1, it differs a bit from its original TOS roots until the end.
With the opening of this, there was and still is something very satisfying, pleasing and amazing about the intro where it captures that feeling of wonder and hope so early.
It has a very nautical sound, remniscient of the musical style of the old Errol Flynn pirate movies from the 30's. Compare this to Erich Korngold's theme from "The Sea Hawk," for example.
star trek is a gay disco for inbreds! klingons are just knobheads with a squashed quality street turkish delight on their head, khan is a cricketer, spock is a wanker, kirk is a tranny, bones touches his patients 'where no man has gone before' and scotty wipes up dogshit in shopping malls!
