@wakabump66 it depends on what level you're playing. In high school level music there are eb clarinet parts quite and i don't say always because some composer don't like eb clarinet and some use them in all their pieces.

I play oboe and english horn, and I'm absolutely in love with specialty instruments. If i didn't play the e. Horn, eb clarinet would be my second choice for specialty. It's hard to play but sounds downright amazing if you know how.

Erm, have you ever PLAYED an Eb? The amount of control you have to exert to produce something other than a screaming wail is huge.

@dimsimlord Yep. I play the Eb, the Bb, the Bb Base, the Alto, the Contrabass, and the Ab. I'm just saying with the right gear, someone can get a great tone. For example, a professional mouthpiece and clarinet would sound marginally better than your plastic student clarinet.

But still, I know that she could take a student clarinet and make it sound like the one she's playing now. She's just that good.

@Starmast3r Sorry man, I don't care what gear you have: If you don't have the chops, it won't sound good. A pro model instrument in inexperienced hands can often sound worse than a student model, as the student model is designed with tuning in mind and not tone. Often times you will find that pro models actually sacrifice tuning (AKA Buffet) in order to get a nice round tone. Eb clarinet is no exception. Also, find me an Eb pro model for less than $3000 new... they're all expensive.

@romsbewe Totally true. Without discipline, technique, and a good embouchure, it would be impossible to achieve a good tone with any clarinet. All I was saying was to take a good player to the next level, one would benefit from better gear than a student clarinet. A decent player who has a good tone and knows how to adjust their embouchure to tune each note specifically would be able to sound better on a professional clarinet. And yes, pro clarinets of all varieties are expensive.

wonderful performance on Eb! Its such a hard instrument to play and have it sound good. But the joy I experience on Eb makes it all worth it. The high notes take practice. Try using a firmer embouchure. The high notes will go terribly flat, but they can be played in tune (Try alternate fingerings long F and adding the Bb/F# sliver key). Good luck. Bb to Eb is a perfect fourth, not a fifth. A concert "A" is an F-sharp on Eb clarinet. A concert "A" on Bb clarinet is a "B". The distance between the two intervals is a perfect fourth, not a fifth.
