The big elephant in the room/the question, is that are we victims of the world, who have to muster their strength to face the gloom of death, or are we the process of the world and life itself? I guess it is the matter of perspective, but I tend to agree with the latter view. I view life after death to be a lot like life before birth. I will be the potential from which life arises if it chooses to do so. :)

Really though Religion offers no evidence for a existence after death and science has not found the evidence yet so really no one really knows. I believe that would it not be more reasonable to put are trust in science when it comes to a existence after death?? Does anyone agree with me that we should let science figure that out?

It comforts me to know that we are made of star stuff and that science has finally reached a point where it can proceed forward without religious interference. Perhaps soon we will be able to not only live very much longer than we currently do, but we will colonize space and free ourselves from dependence on the earth. That's comforting to me, even though those things may happen after my life is over, but I'm 27 now, so we'll see. =)

Personally, I think that there is no life after death in the sense that the individual that once was will 'never' be again (at least not for another thousand years, or so & then they will be living under a new name experiencing a new life, in a different time & so they will not be the same). I think that souls get recycled in a fashion.

This might be the harsh atheist stance (perhaps also because of my scientific background), but I don't really see the comfort in that. You don't want religion pushed on you, but you believe you should push atheism on everyone.

Not going to try deconvert you or anything, but do you even realise that you just created paradox by saying (by looks of it), that everyone is right. If I for example would now starting to beleave in God X who says there isn't any other god. And other person would do same, but for God Y. There is no way both of those could exists same time.

No one can know for sure that there is a God. No one can know for sure that the big bang actually happened. Don't push it on people, that's all I'm saying. There's also a thing called collective memory. A published crossword is solved 25% faster on average then a fresh one. So not only your essense flows through everything, but so does your spirit. Death is simply another state of being.

I'm definitely not afraid for death. Although I'm afraid to become forgotten after my death. This made me into a man who wants do everything to the fullest. Whether it's about martial arts or politics, I strive to be one of the best. (even though I know that's no realistic wish)

So in the end I don't mind the words of spinoza and all other freethinkers, it creates a man who lives life to the fullest!

Het doet me een beetje denken aan de kinderboeken van Philip Pullman, de noorderlicht-trilogie. Pullman is een atheist en goede vriend van Richard Dawkins. Alhoewel het niet 100% wetenschappelijk en feitelijk is, poogt hij in het derde deel van de serie een aangenamere visie voor atheisten op het leven na de dood te geven. [SPOILER-ALERT!] Komt er dan ook op neer dat de deeltjes die wij zijn als we dood gaan in andere dingen voortleven, zo bouwen we een Hemelse Republiek in onze eigen wereld.

Zo heeft het zijn van niet-bioloog ook geen 'inhoud': als je vertelt dat je een niet-bioloog bent, verklaart de term nog niet wat je wel bent. Zo zie ik het zijn van atheïst ook: ik ben gewoon geen theïst. Toegegeven, atheïsme heeft helaas het imago van 'rebels, negatief'; wat mij betreft is dat een blikvernauwend vooroordeel...

De definities lopen een beetje door elkaar heen. Atheïsme is een geloofspositie, maar agnosticisme kan naast een geloofspositie ook een intellectuele positionering zijn: het besef dat je het nooit zeker kunt weten. Je kunt het dus prima allebei zijn. :)

@Yahntia Ik weet natuurlijk niet precies wat je onder 'geloofspositie' verstaat, maar ik denk dat atheïsme, agnosticisme en theïsme ook heel goed intellectuele positioneringen kunnen zijn, waar atheïsme (niet-theïstisch), juist per definitie, geen geloofspositie kan zijn en agnosticisme (het is best mogelijk, maar ik weet het nooit zeker) wel een geloofspositionering kan betreffen.

Atheïsme in absolute zin is een geloofspositie omdat je het niet-bestaan van een god nooit zult kunnen bewijzen. Gelukkig is bijna niemand 100% atheïst (= denken het zeker te weten). Dat je deze onzekerheid onderkent maakt je al een intellectuele agnost. Dat betekent niet dat je er voor jezelf al niet uit kunt zijn. Ik weet dat ik het niet zeker kan weten, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat ik ook maar de kleinste aanleiding zie een "godhypothese" serieus te nemen. Ik ben dus agnost+atheist.
