China used to repel Northern Invasions by massing crossbows, and holding chokepoints to deny Northern horsemen their biggest advantage - mobility. Perhaps a English-Styled Army, which emphasises on defensive infantry, and its Welsh Longbow, it may be able to match the mongols in the field, and perhaps be more effective than mass cavalry. (since longbows outrange everything the ancient world had, asides from artillery).

Testudo would be efficient way for them to get close, then disperse and charge, where they can simply hold up their tower shields to take the majority of arrow fire coming their way until they meet the actual lines of the enemy.

Would a pure infantry army be the answer to the mongol horseback armies? China used to repel Northern Invasions by massing crossbows, and holding chokepoints to deny Northern horsemen their biggest advantage - mobility. Perhaps a English-Styled Army, which emphasises on defensive infantry, and its Welsh Longbow, it may be able to match the mongols in the field, and perhaps be more effective than mass cavalry. (since longbows outrange everything the ancient world had, asides from artillery).

However, if the western armies can reorganise and remodel their armies into something like i said, they might just even out the odds. Thereafter when there is an engagement, it's up to tactics of each commander.
But by reorganising they might just have at least a shot now at winning (as compared to b4), that's my point.

Testudo would be efficient way for them to get close, then disperse and charge, where they can simply hold up their tower shields to take the majority of arrow fire coming their way until they meet the actual lines of the enemy.

@craziii3 Do you actually think I am THAT incompetent? I've studied ancient and medieval warfare since childhood and while the knights of Europe may have not fared well against the overly efficient Mongolian coward archers, the cavalry of the ancient world could very well best them.
Look at the Greek round shields, see their size. Put that on the arms of Alexander's Companion Cavalry, and you have a mounted force nearly invulnerable to projectile fire.

Well Brits colonialized pretty much the whole world, but as long as they reigned they ensured prosperity (compared to other non-Europeans) by bringing new technology, constructing factories and railroads. Before them Africa was still in stone age. Everything happened after they left was up to the population. Surely positive examples would be Hong-Kong, Singapur, RSA, Canada etc.

Millions of natives in North America? Well North America was rather sparely populated. The most of the natives died due to diseases. Most of the continent wasn't even explored till the XIX century and there was no extermination program or what so ever.
