So, you're battling for your life in space, some of your friends are dead, and one of the last things you hear before getting blown to shit by a hundred missiles is this song.
Why don't we do this more often? Play some out-of-place Pop song while we decimate families and take lives by the thousands?
I mean, it's a song about love, and yet it'll always be remembered in their timeline as the song where SO much death happened all at once.
...In that respect, Macross is fucking hardcore...
If you read the translated lyrics, it's more than just a love song. It's a nostalgic reminiscence of a better time--a finite moment of peace and unity--after an unfortunate lapse. There's nothing wrong with wishing for that peace on better terms, and yet simultaneously kicking ass to the extreme in the meantime because current terms are not so swell. Life's complicated like that.
That's precisely why the Protoculture aliens preserved the song in the ruins on Earth, I do believe.
If anyone was wondering, the singer's name is Mari Lijima. She was a major factor in bringing about the birth of J-pop, in a way, kinda like the Japanese version of Britney Spears.
it seems appropriate now

Wahoo! VF-1S is one of the best VF ever created. You need skill and not power to fully use the VF-1S to the Max!

One of the best space battles of all time !
Rick Hunter earned the right to stand next to Luke Skywalker after that battle.
