If I could hock my love could I trade For your wings to cover me and let them fold Half alive, I heard the most brilliant lie Sleep is eyes closed to light And death's the mind wide open You can't stutter when you're talking with your eyes By cutting out your tongue you save face I'm feeding on the blood that's running from a black day Cry on, black rain If I could hock my love could I trade For your wings to cover me unless I fall Sleep is eyes closed to light And death's the mind wide open
@gatortailor As far as I know, no one is able to properly transcribe the lyrics. Cornell has always been abstract, but his lyrics always have some meaning to them (with the exception of "Black Hole Sun"). I'm also pretty sure he's saying "feeding off the blood running from a black EYE", not "day", as well as "SLEEPLESS eyes" and not "sleep is eyes", which makes no fucking sense.
@peachmelba1000 Oh, "Closed TO light". I misread it as "close the light". Yeah, I get it. Thanks for the ever-so-uppity "..." at the end of your sentence.
Its definitely "day" and it is "sleep is eyes", because the next line is "closed to light". Sleep is eyes closed to light. Death's the mind wide open. Even "Black Hole Sun" has meaning to the lyrics, but most people can't drop as much acid as CC so they'll never understand it.
@grungeguy13 I got it, but "Black Hole Sun" really doesn't have a literal or figurative meaning, and unlike other Soundgarden songs there isn't even a real basis for interpretation (with the exception of the chorus), it's made up of lines that make no clear sense when put together. It's just a song based around surrealism. It lets the music do the work, which is nice.
Lyrics are pretty spot on accept for 1 part ("Feeding on the blood thats running from a black rain") it's actually ("Feeding on the blood thats running from a black dye") Idk where everyone gets "rain" from when he's clearly saying "dye"
I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feeling by writing this, but Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees are all Seattle-base bands which blow Alice In Chains out of the water with sheer number of well-written songs they all have which AIC does not. Check out " Superunknown", "Nevermind" and " Sweet Oblivion" to hear what I am referring to.
Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, Bush, Silverchair, are the reasons the 90s ruled if anyone was wondering.
@JayBoge89 No, only "Feeding on the blood that's running from a black rain", rain should be day, and I know because Black Rain is on Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and I sing it ALOT, so yur wrong saying his lyrics are very inaccurate, mildly inaccurate maybe, but definately not very inaccurate
i love how after so long they reappear all like "yeah, we've got this song from a few years back, you can have it now", and its another fucking masterpeice!
btw, i love nirvana with all of my heart, but do they really have to be compared to every other grunge band on these videos, they're both fucking brilliant.
@checkit5674 - Before seeing the lyrics, my first impression was that he says "hawk" and "trade." You can definitely hear an "aw" instead of ah "uh" (hence "hawk") and there's definitely a "d" in there (hence "trade"). It's awesome how hard it is to decode Cornell's enunciation.
Um, anyone who says nirvana is better than soundgarden is out of there fucking minds!!! Omg, how could you even consider that..bahahahaha, that makes me laugh
@10dooly STP is grunge. Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Mudhoney, and the rest of the *ACTUAL* Seattle sound was TOTALLY FUCKING GODHEAD, nothing close to the manufactured media that STP was and is.
Can you people just learn to shut the fuck up and listen to this song without comparing bands. Yeah they were both great bands and Kurt and Chris.C are both music geniuses with incredible talent but who really gives a shit about who was a better guitar player or singer or whatever the fuck you think.
to be honest Nirvana is my favorite band, and soundgarden would have to come in second, to me it doesnt matter how complex or simple the guitar or just the tune in general could be. But I can really relate to Kurt in my life so I could see what he put in his songs and it was his raw emotions and views on the world. Soungarden is freaking amazing though and I love them, but everyones entitled to their own opinions. so it doesnt really matter..
I love this song.Im a late bloomer to SG but I love the irregular beat and odd notes and string bending.F..ng awesome. It doesnt sound like anything else Ive ever heard and it sounds great.Listening to what others do better than the last is okay but not good enough.
To those who fight between Sound Garden and Nirvana..Both of these bands have amazing talented musicians, who in their differences impacted music history the same era....I love them both!!!
just saw them on Conan and they played this. Should've known they pulled this one from the archives. Almost twenty years later and they still rock steady and Cornell bringin the mane back with ease!
@worthlessburger7 It should not be crime. Soundgarden is 1000 times better than Nirvana. Anyone who says they are not better than Nirvana needs to lay off the drugs and enjoy talented music not just rambling and simple guitar riffs.
Nirvana duz have simple riffs, & to be honest, I dont think Cobain would be nearly as legendary as he would be if it wasn't for Smells Like Teen Spirit, which gets waaay too much hype for being one of, if not, the best song in the 90s. I think so at least
@honestlyihavenoidea1 What's that got to do with the fact that Nirvana can suck Soundgardens balls? :D Just said that "bands of this standard" doesnt work here,ços they're on two different and distant levels.
@honestlyihavenoidea1 Soundgarden became famous because of Nirvana? That's hilarious. After all, Nirvana signed to a major label after Soundgarden had done so first . If Superunkown had come out earlier than Nevermind, it would have been the same or probably a bigger sucess!
@jvandam5 It's because everyone wants to feel sorry for Kurt Cobain. He was a talented smack addict who couldn't handle life. Nirvana's music was great, but is now stale. Soundgarden stands the test of time. Read the liner notes to "Telephantasm" and they discuss how all of these very different styles of music got lumped into "Grunge" when they had nothing to do with each other - just a similar music scene.
@jvandam5 you don't have a fucking clue about the depth of nirvana's music, don't falsely accuse because you don't understand. However, Soundgarden Also rule very fucking much.
@jvandam5 The problem are the Nirvana fanatics that think the entire grunge genre revolves around Nirvana and not giving credit where it's due. Well, fanatics in general. All these bands we're great at their own thing. Music isn't a competition but as long as we have idiot fanatics we're always gonna hear stupid comparisons and arguments which will completely ruin it for all music lovers such as ourselves.
@jvandam5 Dude, what you don't understand is that Kurt Cobain had a lot of people riding his dick. Fortunately, I am not one of them. Kurt Cobain was probably the most overrated guitarist ever. He didn't do anything special with the guitar.
@jvandam5 chris cornell ended this band cos he wanted to get paid more so then he joins shitty audioslave and ends that so yeah i guess nirvana is 1000 times better than them
Soundgarden are not better than Nirvana. It's just as simple and clear as that. They are equal due to the fact that they're both different styles of music. I can not accept any other explanation.
@jvandam5 I wouldn't say they're a 1000 times better. Both are equally good bands. If you actually listened to all the songs by Nirvana, it does not just consist of "rambling and simple guitar riffs". Nirvana makes decent music and so does Soundgarden.
@worthlessburger7 it is not a crime. Just a matter of opinion, yours being different than mine, I love me some Soundgarden, and I love me some Nirvana as well. Both are two phenomenal sounds that make my soul alive. Heres to opinions!
@worthlessburger7 because Nirvana is out of the race.Winner by default,Soundgarden. No one had the chance to vote even. But Soundgarden and Pearljam live on.Nirvana is gone, too bad they were winning.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was a B-Side/Outtake from the Louder Than Love sessions. ....Cornell is much more conscious of how not to strain his voice during live performances
This is a def soundgarden composition. Its like they never went on hiatus. Like they've continued on. It sounds like something they would've conjured up in their heyday back in the early 90's post louder than love and pre bad motor finger. Just awesome!!!
@CarbinBleuDia Black Rain is actually an outtake from the Badmotorfinger sessions. It's not a new song that the band wrote, just a song that was put on shelf for a good 19 years.
@BIackSabbath70 oh well fuck me!!!! That kinda suXXX!!!!!!! I was so excited because it seemed like they hadn't lost a step in their absence from each other, but I guess it will be interesting to see how they sound today after years apart if they come out with something new.
Lyrics are updated, straight from the special edition album. Most of your angry suggestions were wrong, but thanks anyways! lol Anyways there should be no more discussion on what the actual lyrics are! So.. yay.
I love Soundgarden and that is why I was proud of them not imitating all the other big bands of the 80s and 90s, EVERY SINGLE FUCKING ONE of which is now back together touring to rack some money thanks to their long past success. If Chris and the others manage to release a new album that sounds like a step forward and not a mimic of their old stuff, then I'll admit they proved me wrong, but so far this looks like yet another pointless reunion. I am disappointed.
There's nothing wrong with the song, it sounds like a classic Soundgarden tune should. However, I am totally disappointed in Chris' incoherence in all this. He had said that a reunion would be unlikely because they all felt they could not reform the band and do anything better than "Down on the Upside", which they felt was their best album ever. Next thing you know, they're on stage again and releasing a f*ing compilation with Guitar Hero. That's not the way to go, Chris. Sorry.
two bits of the lyrics are wrong, the 'feeding on the blood thats running from a black day' is wrong and its ' by cutting your tongue at the same place' not 'you save face', that just sounds retarded dude.

@worthlessburger7 All "seattle sound" bands owe Soundgarden their due. There, but for the grace of Soundgarden go they.

We brazilians only received the single CD version, with no lyrics. But, I bought the deluxe edition at Amazon.com.
Btw, does anyone knows where can i buy the australian edition of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap by AC/DC, i can't find this one even in Amazon.

CarbinBleuDia 1 year ago
@CarbinBleuDia Black Rain is actually an outtake from the Badmotorfinger sessions. It's not a new song that the band wrote, just a song that was put on shelf for a good 19 years.

@BIackSabbath70 oh well fuck me!!!! That kinda suXXX!!!!!!! I was so excited because it seemed like they hadn't lost a step in their absence from each other, but I guess it will be interesting to see how they sound today after years apart if they come out with something new.

@CarbinBleuDia Don't lose hope. The chorus of this song was recorded just before the release. So were the very high cry on's at the end of the song.
Who knows if they'll tour, but, until they do, come see my NYC Based Soundgarden Tribute, JESUS CHRIST POSE!! Look us up on Facebook!

Lyrics are updated, straight from the special edition album. Most of your angry suggestions were wrong, but thanks anyways! lol Anyways there should be no more discussion on what the actual lyrics are! So.. yay.

@jvandam5 Agreed, EXCEPT, it could be "feeding on the blood lets running..." Meaning a ritual of blood letting.
But he's DEFINITELY singing, "running from a BLACK DAY." NOT Black Rain. No matter what the official lyrics say, that's a mistake or a misprint.

Sorry.

does it really matter what the lyrics are? its not like we can sing as awesome as Chris Cornell can!! :D

two bits of the lyrics are wrong, the 'feeding on the blood thats running from a black day' is wrong and its ' by cutting your tongue at the same place' not 'you save face', that just sounds retarded dude.

@nortyhayden cutting `out ' your tongue
WancakesTheBrave90 1 year ago
@nortyhayden Honestly I just copied and pasted this from the top lyrics site. I will change them. Dude.
jvandam5 1 year ago
@nortyhayden Also, the "by cutting out your tongue you save face" Is correct I bought the special edition album and the lyrics are listed.
jvandam5 1 year ago
@nortyhayden do you know what 'save face' means? It makes perfect sense.
