The first time I saw this film was with my boyfriend and a couple of his friend several yrs ago.
I was glad I wasn't the only person in the room laughing at this sick ass scene because if I had been, I would have looked like a total psycho myself. There's just something funny about a dancing guy in a rain coat killing a co-worker in his apartment. lol.
I have allways hated this movie..i never understood it, he talk to much and i just never got what the fuck did he meant. just a lazy movie o me tbh, but maybe its becuz i dont get it :P
@moviegrapevine yeah never thought of that xD yes maybe, cuz all i understood in this move was : talk talk and he kills and talk some more and then he kills :P
This cat is soooo me. Only, my brisk slipping sanity of malice only comes out like this in a more artistic fashion towards pedophiles and rapist's. I've arrived fellas.
That makes sense, except for the fact that when he was chasing the prostitute through his house with a chainsaw and she saw the dead bodies, she screamed, which would suggest that they, along with the words "DIE YUPPIE SCUM" or whatever written on the wall did actually exist, unless the prostitute (was her name Christie?) was sharing his hallucinations, too.
My hypothesis is that Bateman imagined the murders and executions. He's really just a bitter and self-hating yuppie who has grown disgusted with his own conformist and consumerist behaviors and that of his peers. Names are always confused because they are all the same, evidenced by their business cards. The violent episodes are heralded by popular music and apparent anti-psychotics - a nice evening at home. The violence, like his commentaries on popular artists, are merely hateful inner musings.
@scientrophic I agree the movie does a good job blurring the lines of reality. I think yours is a popular breakdown and a well thought out one. However, If you read the book it seems to point more toward him committing the murders. It is still ambiguous though, I think that is what makes it so good.
@scientrophic no no the author said batemen really did kill em all but in my opinion your hypothesis would have made this film all the more interesting
@blatantlyable I was just trying to make sense of what I saw in the movie. I read an interview with Ellis where he states that film is a medium that demands answers, which makes the story infinitely less interesting. I know they artificially tied up some loose ends for the film, but without having read the book, I think they did a nice job. I imagine the book is a total mind-fuck that will never really make sense.
@scientrophic 'Your' hypothesis is nothing new my friend but relevant non the least. I personally like to think that he did commit the murders, names are confused so the lawyer could easily have mistaken somebody else for Paul.
@scientrophic If you read the book and watch the movie you get a better understanding of the context. It's completely up to the reader/viewer what the reality is, he takes benzodiazepines in the book to control the hallucinations he is complaining about ( you see him take them in this scene) but that doesn't mean everything was imagined or hallucinated. Looking at both the book & movie I think the ONLY killings you could argue he hallucinated were the spree and maybe Paul Owen
@patient0Studios What's also interesting is that, on many occasions, Bateman let's his true personality our, but is ignored by everyone. Best scene to illuminate that is the, "Murder and Mayhem" line.
The other time is when he tries to show the ugly side conformity through the business card scene, when he wears the glasses. Everyone knows he's copying but they simply ignore it, rather than point it out.
@patient0Studios I'm not disagreeing, because I haven't actually read the book...but how about all the bodies in the apartment that weren't there when he came back the day after his spree (in the movie)? Wasn't that where he stashed them all except for the homeless guys? And if it was where he supposedly stashed them, wouldn't that mean the killings didn't actually happen? If the book sheds any light on that, I'd be really interested...
@HAHAdom My theory on that is Paul Allen's family came to the apartment, saw what they thought were Paul Allen's victims and quietly got rid of everything to protect him (thinking their son lost his mind and disappeared after killing all these people).
That's why the real estate agent is so defensive the next day.
@scientrophic I personally think he did them all, he's a sick fucker lol He kills a kid in the book just to experiment with the idea, he doesn't like it lol. That is probably the only nearly human reaction to his actions he displays.
@scientrophic How could he have hallucinated this killing when shortly after he has a detective (Dafoe) investigating the death? Your theory is retarded at best.
The only reason for thinking that is at one of the final scenes, when Bateman goes to the flat where he murdered the two girls and discovers everything's fine and clean. But the real explanation to that is that high society, 'yuppies' as you call them, cover each others' backs (who'd buy a flat where two girls were brutally murdered?
@SK8musicfeeling They're called yuppies in the film, you know, "Die yuppie scum" written in blood on walls. I hadn't really considered Dafoe too much as he evaporated by the end of the film, but you're right. So why would you think that yuppies cover each others' backs? I don't recall anything in the film indicating that kind of altruism. If anything, their sheer homogeneity and constant misidentification worked in favor of Bateman, as he was consistently drawn into alibis by other yuppies.
@SK8musicfeeling The line where Bateman's lawyer mistakes him for someone else and calls Bateman too much of a pussy to have carried out a string murders made me think that maybe it was imagined. But you're right about Dafoe. I think what happened is the lawyer really did see someone who he mistook for Paul in London, Bateman was randomly placed into alibis because no one actually knows each other's names. Maybe the last rampage was hallucinated though. And you don't have be such a dick, either.
I read the book a few years ago, (before I'd seen the movie) kept thinking," this must get better, they must catch him". Just wanted to bleach my brain out by the end. The movie is mild in comparison.
