To avoid poi hitting each other, have one hand a little higher than the other. This puts them slightly out of time. Also the movement is mostly in your fingers in this move.

Start with your arms wide and gradually bring your wrists to touch. Try avoid crossing over your wrists as this is a common mistake that makes it even harder.
