Tutorial: Aspirin Mask BHA Beta Hydroxy Acid

I watched this video this morning, and then when I saw you put the Freeman's mask in, I was wondering what other mask I should use, and I was just at my local supermarket, and they've just got the Freeman's masks in stock! So random, because I live in Australia, and I never thought I'd find the exact one you used! So happy :) Now I know I can use the same mixture as you, because I have dry skin too, and I didn't wanna risk using something that would make my skin freak out! :P

Hi Gina, such a great video, as always! I have oily skin so I have been using the stridex pads (which have done great for me) and know that is a BHA. Do I still need to use an AHA? If so, when and how do I work that into my skincare routine? Thanks so much!! ~~Macy

@macyrae81 I think a good aha is good with a bha routine. aha like glycolics will help prevent cellular buildup on the skin which is a culprit in how pores get clogged in the first place. (clogged pores = oil and dead cells) Manual exfoliants aren't bad either (like one with granules) but they're trickier as to not over-do and scratch the skin.

@dakotahanna I say use whatever you feel your skin needs after the mask. I do because my skin is dry, but with oily skin you may not feel the need. :) I always use this mask with a clean face. xox

Compared to a beta hydroxy chemical peel that is 30% how strong is the Aspirin mask? I mean is the Aspirin mask the equivalent of a 30% beta hydroxy chemical peel?

hey .. im from the philippines and finding that kind of aspirin is really hard .. the drugstores here only sell the coated ones ..  this sucks, i really want to try it after i watched michelle phan's tutorial about this mask .. too bad

hi, im also from the philippines theres aspirin brand called bayers its a genereric one, its like P 3.00 ONLY:) and you can get it anywhere(ex: watsons, mercury drugs, local drugstores...etc) go check that out and let me know if i can help you with anything :) oh btw, i tried have tried these mask and its AWESOME!

hi sorry for the late reply.. im from makati philippines:) btw, try to go to watson (that is the last place i went to get this) then ask them for the GENERIC kind of aspirin. BRANDED ones usually are coated so dont go for that. the generic asprin called "Bayers 300mg" is like 3.00 pesos only and it dissolves really fast!!! :)

any kind of glycolic acid product should help hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C products or called "ascorbic" acid helps as well. xoox

When you do the glycolic acid once a week and the aspirin mask say every 3 weeks or so, when the aspirin week comes, im guessing you wouldnt do them both on the same day??

Also when I do the aspirin mask my skin feels quite itchy, during & after, is that normal?

you're correct.. I wouldn't do both masks close together. I wonder if you have a slight allergy to aspirin as I never feel itchy after the mask. if you only itch and get good results I'd continue, though.

I love how you explain the differences between the acids. When I get older I would like to become a dermatologist, so I love all of the explanations. When I did this mask I used BC. BC is aspirin in powder form, so you don't have to disolve it. It's a lot quicker! Anyways, my skin scares really really easily. I felt that this really helped reduce some of my scars. I was wondering if you could make a video on treating scars. I loved the video!

How can you tell if the aspirin is BHA or AHA?

and is 81mg is the better than the 325mg or it doesn't matter?

the chemical composition will state what type of acid it is. aspirin is non-polar in chemical terms alpha hydroxy acids are polar. it doesn't matter so much about the mg.. but use maybe 6 if it's a lower dose and 4 if it's higher.

I'd just recommend you stay out of the sun the day you do it, or put on a good spf will work too. I do feel it fades acne scarring, but glycolic acid does a better job for scarring, which is another thing I do. xoxo

I love doing aspirin masks before special occasions or if I have a bad breakout. It works wonders on cystic acne as well. =]

I'm confused. If the asprin disolves oils, doesn't adding an oil to the mask counterproductive?

like dissolves like, it's more that they bind . But, the amount of avocado mask you add is very small in comparison to the amount of aspirin in the mixture. It will still do a great job and be less harsh on your face.

All you need to do with the non enteric coated ones is dab a couple drops of water on them and they soften really fast
