i have an unofficial NES cartridge with this game on it.

my dad used to work for a guy that made bootlegged NES games and at one time they made a SMB Lost Levels cartridge.

although back then i was a little kid and thought this was a mario game made AFTER the 3rd game. i even put a 4 on the cartridge XD.

it took until SMB All-Stars for me to see it was actually the real 2nd game.

the reason this one didn't make it to the U.S. as the mario 2 is because this was on the disk system in Japan and nintendo of japan wasn't anticipating the american gamers to buy the disk system 2 years after the nes came out just for mario 2.. so they cloned "dream factory" into marios 2 for the U.S. to put on shelves to sell.

you know you can use the first turtle in 1-1 that's in the bricks in the air to get unlimited lives right? and there're tons more secrets and stage jumping hidden spots compared to the first one. this is actually the mario 2 that i grew up playing in asia. the real one.. the one we have in the U.S is actually called "Dream factory" for the famicom in japan.

Uh, dude? It came out here on snes in 1993. SMB All-Stars. This game was called SMB: The Lost Levels. And it was the best damn game in the whole pack cuz for american gamers, it was a new game rather than a pretty re-tread. It wasn't super hard...just different, with wind and poison mushrooms and other new things.

Well there is of course the English version which everyone in America and I think Europe has played before. But this is the original 2nd game and is a much harder version of the first game.

The english one has something to do with Doki Doki Panic or something like that; the one in the vid is the 2nd game. It wasn't imported to the U.S because Japan thought we didn't have good enough skills at Super mario bros.

Well this one was from a long time ago but I think it was Camstudio. Now that I have a newer PC with Vista, it doesn't record audio right so I have to run the narrate feature from Windows Movie Maker over top that.

In the NES version of the game, the poison mushrooms looked almost exactly the same as the power up mushrooms.

Its usually true. The only instance I can think of that is the opposite is Streets of Rage 3 for the Sega Genesis. The American version was much harder.

And less fun unfortunately, because in the American version it takes far longer for the player to be promoted to the ability of executing 3-star special moves (which I feel is the meat of the game other than the secondary 'A' special attacks that intermittently use up the 'OK' power gauge without decreasing the life gauge).

And Ash the gay fighter was also censored. Why do Americans take everything (especially in video games) so seriously...

I bet this second Japanese Mario game actually made many Japanese kids cry, scream and throw their controllers at the TV screens (especially those who are 6 to 9 years old at that time in 1986 when they saw this game and tugged at their parents to get it after playing and easily beating the first one).

I guess this game was supposedly too hard for us North Americans and we got Doki-Doki Mario instead. Anyways, the game is available for the VC and I might download it, even if my incompetent western gamer skills are no match for it. XD

world 1-1: hit the block underneath the mushroom to send it over at 30 seconds. Also you kick the red koopa troopa at 1:24 shell after you hit it to create a chain reaction to get a 1up. I did both on my 1st try. 4:56 damn that was bad. I looked so smooth with how I beat bowser in 8-4 to beat the game. Good thing I put up a video response of my review to show you how that was done. The snes version with all stars is the same game as this.

Last time i checked you use a D-Pad and 2 buttons to play Mario. Explain how using a PS2 type controller is awkward with such a simple control scheme? O_o

ChazDragoon: The NES controller is much smaller for one thing. Also my friend played it just yesterday through the thing i bought. Apparently my Controller converter box is semi-unresponsive in that sometimes your character doesn't move but thankfully it doesn't happen too often.
