wow i remember this episode...i was disappointed when the Korean chef lost which i am pretty sure that being a woman contributed to her loss...awesome show but biased on several levels...
Korean royal court cuisine was the style of cookery within Korean cuisine traditionally consumed at the court of the Joseon Dynasty, which ruled Korea from 1392 to 1910. The Korean royal court cuisine brought all of the unique regional specialties together for the royal family. Yeah, you are just being dubious. Open a book or just Google it.
If I was her, I would have wanted a rematch, demanded that I would be allowed to bring my own sous chefs and have one of the judges be Korean. Did anyone else notice the look on the ambassadors' faces at the end?
Liver normally has a strong impact, a really harsh flavor and smell and a unique texture. They managed to control those aspects so that it goes down easy.
Liver is about the only food that I have come across that I do not like but I still would have liked to try the ones these chefs prepared. Taking nothing away from the Iron Chefs but I think that the challengers start off with a huge disadvantage in having mostly Japanese judges on the panel and having "generic" sous chefs to assist them. Give the challengers their own sous chefs and have a wide variety of tasters and I think that the ICs records would not be so inflated.
Could kind of see that coming when they did the taste test. The judges were all like "...yeah it's..ah...good" or " You know, I thought it'd be horrible but it's actually not THAT horrible!"
One of the reasons the Iron Chefs always win is that it makes it even that much more impressive when the challenger beats them. If they didn't win so often, then when the IC are actually beat it's less of an honor.
Wow, I'm glad Chen won. Someone told me he lost, lol. xD I'm gonna have a word with that person. >:D
Anyway, I think he did better overall. He really had a creative approach to his dishes and his presentation was wonderful. The challenger was good, but he was better.
on 4:55 Kaga says he's too kind, don't you think and Kenichi replies, he doesnt have to be. Japanese culture or customs would not allow him to say such a thing. The english translator or dub has really westernized there remarks on here... but I love the show.
i don't think she offered up a real variety of korean dishes. hot chili and garlic used in all of her dishes (except sesame one?), which wasn't surprising at all, which then unfortunately typecasts her dishes. her finisning w/ 3 min to spare could be seen as good time mgt but i wish she would've spent that time making a 5th dish that would've truly blown the socks off the judges. her final dish, was not unique - instead of meat, she just used liver. what happened to introducing new dishes???
I agree with you. I really think she should have pushed herself a lot more. And I think Chen certainly pushed himself much more than she did and did a better job overall. His presentation blew hers away.
Perhaps they were simply not used to the Korean cooking and thus rated it higher. Much like newcomers to certain types of art will rate everything as a masterpiece before they learn. Her dress and attempts to educate probably helped too. It is for entertainment, after all.
Ha! I thought that she won when I posted my last comment. My friend recommended this episode and said the only bad thing was that Chen lost when he deserved to win. >:D I shall have a discussion with him!
I'm korean. And I'm sushi chef. Not much to do with cooking, but first of all, cooking something like liver is very hard. In other hand, beef liver sashimi is my favorite all time thing....my last time I had was when I was 5 years old, and now I'm 27. I still remember that taste of fresh beef liver sashimi . It doesn't melts in your mouth ,but its' kinda slicks, also everytime you chew those nice juices mabe its blood , anyway it was very good.
Kimchi is pretty delicious, actually. But I think I would have rolled my eyes too... my mom's Korean, and she cooks a lot more things than just kimchi.
I wonder how they stock there kitchens... I mean if they dont know what the food is going to be until they come on the show... I always wanted to try liver... People always told me its gross...
Stop saying it changed your perceptions! I guess the phrase is less stilted in Japanese, but man alive.
I watched this episode to see if it was anything like the parody in Order of the Stick, and the similarities were so many as to be disturbing. Right down to the deranged look of the host.
It's pretty tough to weigh in on a cooking contest without tasting the dishes. The Iron Chefs have the advantage of knowing what most of the repeat tasters like, and in working within the one-hour format in those kitchens. But the challengers often enjoy an advantage in the ingredients chosen. Iron Chef is the most fun when the battles go into overtime, but that did not happen very often.
You guys forget that the iron chefs are really good chefs themselves and have had so many battles judged by the same judges and know how to cater to their tastebuds even if it's an unorthodox dish. That's why they win.
fucking sexist made iron chef win again....that culinary critict needs to get laid

Liver has an unmistakable flavor but it's not as gamey as heart. Who hasn't had pate'? Pate' is liver and herbs.

@purplewolfking I doubt being a woman had anything to do with it...the first two women on this show won against Chef Chen.

@purplewolfking what would it mean if being a woman really had nothing to do with their judgment? i think the only biased person is you.

Royal Korean cuisine? Hmm maybe I'm just dubious but I don't even know how "royal" it would compare to Chinese or French traditions.

Yea man I agree

They could make blind tasting. The judges wouldn't know who cooked which.
There would also be no permanent guest judges. If the ICs are consistent, a regular would recognize it. ICs would also know how to cater to them.
Judges from different background (nationality, cuisine, etc.); 1 for the IC and challenger. This ensures that all is fair (as far as judging).
Challengers allowed to bring their own assistants. This evens it for foreign challengers who can't speak or understand Japanese.
