  • wherw to buythis cable?

  • Hmm. Looks pretty shitty i.m.o. iPhone rocks though.

  • iphone fucking rules

  • Will it work on iOS 4

  • Could sone body plz tell me how the quality of movies comes through tv out for iPhone 2G and wether it's worth it to buy the tv out cable plz...

  • Thats an iPod non an iPhone Dude

  • wow enough toys there bud? and im sure the ipod touch beats the wii!

  • are there any apps that got accepted after using this method?

  • @wiibart he useing a hailbroken pluging with the a/v cords, so he can run any games.

  • you should learn to read the description...

  • Ok heres an idea for someone to try that would be pretty badass, Iv been looking into it myself a little bit but I don't have all the resources and technical know-how right now to actually do it. Basically if u hooked up a Wiimote (via bluetooth - google it) to ur iphone, u could play ur iphone games directly on ur TV as if on regular console. And with things like NES, SNES & GBA emulator it would b like having a portable multi-platform game console right on ur iphone, think about it lol...

  • @leviathin5 i do that :D works pretty well check my video :)

  • i already did this

  • @leviathin5 kewl idea

  • Nice size tv bet that cost a bit XD

  • Hi, this is great, I just placed a order for this cable, it was cheap, less than a fiver. Anyway can you tell me the quality in tv, if you have a hd 42 inch tv, will the quality come out as blotchy, or is it better on smaller tv. Thanks so much.

Also do you need any app to be put on the ipod, to get it to work on the tv other than the cable.

  • You guys can buy these cables in the Apple store or eBay. Cool video.

  • I had seen this cables before ,and there not simple 3 rca's cables, it has 3 more plugs for the entire hd tv plugs in the back of the tv ,this cables work fine with the iphone 2g,3g 3.0 firmware.I had try to get this type of cables from ebay ,but the cables that sales in ebay there not compare with the type that it's shown at the begining of this video,is upto the person who owns this video to tell us where did he get this cables.please.

  • Where did you buy that kabel ?

  • Hey guys, hello. I have a 1st generation iPod touch, with 2.2.1 OS, and I dont know what is MPTVOutWindow. Is it an app?

I want to know what to do, for playing my games in my TV. Please, if you could explain me just quickly, or tell me where to find the info, I would be very glad!, Thanks in advance!!

  • hey, it's an app u can download via cydia, only when jailbroken your iphone

  • the quality is nice :D

i have an iphone 3g (jailbroken myself)

but i didnt know it was that sharp

  • aesome

  • it has better graphics than the wii!

    lol

  • Absolutely not

  • how...? what....? huh......? FUCK!!!!!!

  • I have an ipod touch and i was thinking is it possible to use this same cable to output the safari internet on ipod to TV?

  • ti has to be an special cable (wire)you should buy it in usa

  • it's in argos as well

  • Friend (im from brazil sorry for my bad english) but why is cable ? dock/rca ?

Because i buy one similiar cable for my iphone 2.2 and not ok not play song nothing!

  • Pretty cool

  • how i playe games in tv please

  • for those of you sho call this laggy:...

I'm pretty sure it's runing in "software-mode" and not taking any vantage of the graphics co-processor

  • AWESOME DUDE!!!

  • SOME SERIOUS LAG THERE ::D:D:

  • your retarted the iphone doesnt lag lol

  • I might be going a bit too far on this (like in: dreaming), especially considering the early state the development is in, but: Have you thought about ways how one could implement this in a multiplayer-like environment already? I mean, how could a second iPhone join in for the fun? Would it be possible with existing wifi, bluetooth capabilities? (If not for 'action' - do you remember Tetris on the original Game Boy with a link cable? Now add a big screen for a more joint experience...)

  • You can. "Raging Thunder" for Iphone

  • It's definitely possible. Freeverse's own flick fishing has multiplayer for two people connected to the same wifi network.

  • Maybe it needs to up or downscale the video stream? Or maybe the app was not optimized (supposedly they did the coding in under 4 hours).

Either way, read the Apple Insider article on the upcoming powerVR chip on the next gen iPhone... it seems gaming will get a LOT better.

  • why is it lagging so much?

  • Apple Insider:

"Freeverse noted that the program ran best on the second-generation iPod touch, which includes a 532MHz processor compared to the iPhone and iPhone 3G's 412MHz chip.

Even so, Moto Chaser maxed out at around 20 frames per second, making it "nearly playable," according Freeverse, whose producer Bruce Morrison noted that the "norm for commercial games is 30fps, a point at which motion becomes as smooth and watchable as normal TV video."

  • yes, but it doesn't lag on the iPod Touch or iPhone when you are playing.

When I play on my iPhone 2G it's better than iTouch on TV, so I don't understand why is it a big deal to transmit to a television

  • quality ok ?

  • Is this a G1?

  • Nope, an itouch(will work on iphone too).

Anybody know if Gphones will be able to output to tv?

I'm anxious to see what comes out for the gphones a yr from now, after developers have had time to build apps... Competition is definitely good!

  • Wow, that's awesome work, looks like I'll have to get an AV cable for my iPhone, hopefully in the not to distant future.

I suppose the difference in processor speed between the iPhone and 2nd gen iPod touch will result in a performance hit.

  • look at where the "GAS" button is on the screen, then look at his fingers. he's not pressing the GAS button, but its still driving.

  • If you read the arstechnica article, you will find that the game was programmed to have auto-gas. Notice also that he can't punch the enemies when the punch button appears. Obviously the touches on the phone don't work when outputting to a tv. This isn't fake. Why does EVERYONE think it is?

  • Thanks that's exactly right. The only reason we are touching the screen is to keep the iPod from going to sleep. And we are pressing the right corner out of habit. We have another game in development that has an action button in the lower right.

  • do people seriously think this is fake? are you that retarded?

  • Nice :)

  • aret the tires even spinning.looks so blocky, thought this could do better than psp.

  • "thought this could do better than psp."

You obviously have no freaking idea on console vs. phone capabilities.

Nice one hippieman! (GOONY GOONY GOON)

  • Better than psp? I doubt it.

Maybe it could kick DS's ass.

    BTW. DS SUCKS!

  • I like how you replied to this obviously fake comment instead of the real one I was parroting. GOONY HURR GOON. GOONSIRE. ALL MY FIVES

  • aret the tires even spinning.looks so blocky, thought this could do better than psp.

  • Why would anyone WANT to fake this? "Look at me, I'm taking a device that outputs to its own screen and instead outputting to a TV screen!"?

Which is not to say that it's not awesome. It is. If it was a fake, though, it'd be a pretty unimpressive one given that we've got guys charging iPods with onions and whatnot in the OTHER fakes.

  • idiots its not fake, but the cable stick it in your tv and get the software, and STFU!

  • Good job on this, it looks realistic.

  • Photoshoped.

  • This is cool. Thanks for sharing it. Can this work with an ipod touch?

  • Yes. That is a 2nd Gen iPod Touch in the video. But it works on any iPhone/iPod Touch running OS 2.2

  • wtf

  • Seriously people. Use your brain cells. This is my game. I don't mean I own it, I mean I made it. I have the Xcode project.

We just wired the game up to always have the gas. If you own Moto Chaser, you'll notice that this starts you driving instantly instead of doing the the "Get Ready, Go!" It's not rocket science to notice this.

    Don't be stupid.

  • Care to prove how it's a fake?

  • wuts the big deal idont get it????

  • The big deal is, nobody knew how to do this before just a few days ago.

Last week it wasn't possible, now it is.

  • kno how to do wut?

  • Really dude? You should just give up at life. You seem to be failing at it quite a bit.

  • What was the resolution being sent to the display? Native 320x480? Is it configurable for a higher resolution?

  • It's sending out a 640X480 signal to the TV. That's part of the slowdown, the iPhone normally only has to output that smaller resolution. When it ups the rez, it slows down as it cannot keep up with the fill rate.

  • Very, very cool. Although, I cant say the iPhone is putting out the best frame rates for this setup.

  • is this a hack or this comes standard with the AV cable for apps and stuff?

  • Neither. In the iPhone OS 2.2 there is a new class that allows us to tell a program to display to the AV cables instead of the iPhone and iPod screen. This is not a documented API (like how Google used the light sensor for their app).

  • any1 saying its fake they sell iPhone to hdmi, so think before you speek

  • Yea right, it looks like a fake, just playing a video.

  • You are absurd. We gave a build to Ars Technica based on code they have PUT ONLINE. We also had Mike Rose from TUAW in the office who played the game on the TV.

There's nothing to gain by faking this.

  • I will believe it when I see it for real, where Apple is concerned there are too many fakes for attention.

  • Two different news organizaions have played this build. We sent it to Erica at Ars Technica, it's on her iPhone right now. We also had Mike Rose from TUAW come play the game in our office. They both wrote news articles on it.

If you live in NYC you can come by the office and play it yourself. We are a legit company, we do this for a living.

  • looks a bit pixalated.... but fun

  • Show some video performance. Load up a movie and lets see how it looks.

  • There is no reason to. You can do that right now. The iPhone and iPod Touch have supported video out of Apple's Movie player since launch. Only now can 3rd party applications access the video out.

  • I'm just saying, it's hard to find those videos. I'm asking you to do this for me please. I'd like to see the quality of a movie or at least can you give me a link to a vid that shows this? I've been unsuccessful in finding one.

  • Awesome to see the video out applet working!

    iPhone 3G + in-dash LCD + video-out = lot of possibilities

  • FAKE. You aren't pressing on the gas button on the left and you skipped the whole menu process in the beginning.. just magically jumped to a race. That and besides the opening logo, nothing is displayed on your iphone screen.. just a white blank screen. Wish this were true though, I'd love to play this on my big screen tv.

  • its not fake you idiot.

  • Wow you retard. They remade the game to work like this. Don't speak if you don't know what your talking about.

  • It's not fake. That's my game, we have the source code as we made it. So we rewired it.

We found that we can output video to the device also, by creating a 2nd target window.

  • Why would you do this? Buy a ps2.. its cheaper and will probably look less ugly.

  • Because we can.

  • it looks like a fake, because you aren't pressing the gas button!?

  • We don't have to. We told the game that gas press = true.

  • Are you pressing gas?? It looks like you're pressing the punch side of the phone, 'cause gas is on the left side on the TV...

  • No, we disabled all touch events. So we can't punch the enemy guys either. We just wired up the Gas to always be on.

  • in theory, 1) apps will be able to accept touch events on the iphone screen while outputting to the tv?

and as you say in another comment:

"We found that we can output video to the device also, by creating a 2nd target window"

    2) so an app will be able to output to tv in 1 window, while also outputting to a 2nd window(iphone screen) AND accept touch input?

Outstanding!! what app possibilities that inspire?

Great job to you and Ars Technica.

Will Apple restrict 3rd party devs as in past?

  • is that a 32"?

  • 50"

  • steve want to take every percent of market share ....incredible geek....worship him...lol

  • are you pressing gas

  • No, the reason we are touching the screen is to keep the iPod from going to sleep.

  • what the heck

  • the whole video i couldn't think of anything other than why you won't hit that other biker. it was driving me BONKERS. but then i realized that the touch screen wasn't working lol.

  • Yeah, spawning a 2nd window and drawing it on the device and hooking up touch events is the next step.

  • Sweet as hell, but the frame rate looks pretty bad. Is it the hardware that's having trouble, or is it the connection to the TV?

  • It's the fill rate on the device. Outputting to a 640X480 draw window is tapping the device out.

  • That's what I though. Still cool though :)

  • more like n64 graphics with wii-like movements

thats incredible guys! i hope one day to see a wii-like tv out feature with iphone useage

  • lol its like playing an N64

  • Is there like a 0.5 seconds lag or something?

  • Something close to that. The game originally ran at 26 frames a second (so every 26 frames the big clock in the middle would count down by one). We were running at something like 20 frames (give or take) so the game took a little long.

You can see the actual game time in the upper right corner. Compare that to the movie playback time to see the difference.

  • how do you do this without pressing gas?

  • We hardwired the bas button to always be down in this demo.

  • thats pretty awesome!

  • Woah thats really cool, too bad I dont have an iphone

  • At which resolution is the iphone working?

  • I tried to do this:

    _window = [[MPTVOutWindow alloc] initWithFrame: r];

The window seems to be created, but I still see video on the iPhone, and it's not sending the video out. Is there more I need to do?

  • Is this available anywhere? I'm getting "no longer available."

  • Why was he holding down the wrong side of the screen?

  • We got used to holding the right side of the screen from another game. The only reason we are holding onto the screen is to keep the device from going to sleep (since we didn't tell it to not go to sleep). The Gas button is hardwired to go in this build.

  • Great job! Twittered!

  • You have to output the video to the AV cables using the MPTVOutWindow class. You have to be using the iPhone SDK 2.2.

Then depending on your program, you might have to rotate the video signal.

  • Where did you get that output? Man, the possibilities with wireless and Apple TV- are developers watching this?

  • how do you do it? can you message me?

  • you can't drive worth shit! ha ha. This is awesome, nice job. The picture looks exceptional.

  • how u do it

  • that's an ipod touch

  • You are correct. I realized the info wasn't very clear. It's an 2nd Gen iPod Touch in fact. But it works with any device, iPhone or iPod Touch.

    I've edited the info.

  • That's pretty crafty...BRILLIANT!!!!
