whenever i try to use this to actually make a comic it pisses me off and i dont use it for a long time then the same thing happens when i decide to try again
@OddDude21 Manga Studio is not without it's shortcomings. I think I could do a whole comic with it, faster and cheaper, and with equal, if not better quality than if I did it traditionally. But would I want to? I don't think so.
I have EX4 real bought version and it wont let me raterize panel ruler layer, in it's place it just says rasterize layer and it just becomes a dead frame with no inidivdual panel selecting feature :( Please help ; ;
@Kuchingsama Thanks for the question. I only recently got MSEX4 and was also baffled as to what changed. I figured it out and am uploading a new video as I type. I hope it helps you and everyone else.
i have a problem, i want to use the panels .. just simply use it.. but i cant, it wont allow me.. for example, when i choose a 2-Panel and click on it, the options are disabled. i cant Paste Layer etc.
When I click right button in Panel Rule Layer to rasrerize, my option is only ' Rasterize Layer' not ' Rasteruze Panel Ruler'' and, when I click it, it doesn't separate in the differents sections that I make :S:S
@CoffeeStained I'm in beginner, I go to layer on the top and click new layer, it asks me what type of layer, I click Ruler Layer Panel. Then it shows me a red/black circle with a line through it when I'm on the sheet, help.
@Demonrik Yes it can.Unfortunately I can no longer check how, as Mac OSX.7 (Lion) will not allow me to open MS EX3. I believe you had to open the Preferences, expand the Page preferences and go to the Panel preferences. There will be an option to change the 'Side Interval', which should be Vertical 3mm x Horizontal 5mm by default. In North American slang, this split is called the 'gutter'.
good one, i have oen question, i do my drawing separad, and then y just pasted on the panel, but i wonder is there a way to do so in manga studio, couse i do it manually and then scan everything and that it
is the drawing should be inside the panel? or is't ok if you draw them outside the panel, i mean a big drawing outside the panel, and some drawings stay inside. and when making a manga, should it be read, from left to right or right to left?
@DrRTYHabits Normally, drawings are inside the panel, but sometimes the drawing goes partly outside the panel, this is called a 'breakout'. Sometimes the panel extends of the page, or there are no panel borders at all, this is called a 'bleed'.
I do have a question... if i want to draw the character or whatever im going to draw, out of the panel, how can i do it? (since i can only draw inside the panel)
I do have one question though. After cutting the panels out, when i click on the Rasterize button, it keeps asking me if i want to keep the original layer or not. The problem with this is, when i click either 'yes' or 'no' (the only options) the panels don't come up as individual layers. :(
This helped me out soo much after getting my software some days ago. What I wanted to know is after creating the panels how do u fill in the white space to black outside of the panels? Plz help!
i use manga studio Debut 4, and when i use the cutter, it immedietly makes it so i havbe to make the panels from one end to the other, i cant stop in the middle like yours here
hey it's my first time using manga studio so i bought manga studio debut 4 first but when i scan my drawings it comes out perfectly but when i try to open it on manga studio it just say that no items match your search but even when it's a normal picture it still doesn't come up can anyone help me? tnx
Hey I need help with Manga Studio 4 EX. After scanning my image and inking it, I relized I made a mistake with the tones, so I wanted to delete the tone layer. I tried deleting it but each time I tried the message "The System cannot find the path specified". I went back and tried to delete more layers and the same message kept reoccurring. Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks, man! And I don't think this tutorial was too slow. Besides, even if it was, I'd much rather have that then those "speed speakers" who talk a million words per minute and speak indistinguishably. You're paced, not slow. But this short-attention-spanned world wouldn't understand that.
I was wondering if there was a way to create floating panels that are small and not on or near the side of the page. Or even if there is a way to sort of drag the panels to where you need them to be?
@CoffeeStained Wait so you have to draw on the computer? what if you have have a drawing you done on paper you cant edit or add the necisary tones using this program?
@nitrofrog Are you talking about sketches or finished work? It's easier to just import jpegs behind all the layers in the main page. Finished artwork can be imported into each layer as well.
Can you make various already-panelled pages so I can print them out and draw on them instead? My Manga Studio 3 messed up and I'm more comfortable with hand drawings. I need the panels precisely rectagle-shaped (I'm talking geomerty here), as big as possible (or at least around there, maybe about 4-6 different-sized panels per page), and in American left-to-right format.
@race1717 I am inclined to believe that you have a pirated copy of Manga Studio, due to the error type you have stated you had. I cannot help. If you obtained your copy legally, ask Smith Micro to help restore your copy to working order.
Otherwise, if you are more comfortable drawing by hand on paper, draw your panels on paper as well.
@MrChinwin Do you have ANY palettes open? If not, hit TAB and they should appear. If you do, some palettes by default (don't ask me why) block other palettes. Clicking the layer palette button only changes it's visibility, it doesn't change the layer order, i.e. bring it to the front of the screen. You might have to move around your other palettes or hide them to discover the whereabouts of your layer palette.
@CoffeeStained Thanks for replying. Yes I have all of the palettes visible. I've tried moving them around to see if it was hidden, but it doesn't seem to be hidden. At first, I thought it was because I only had one layer, but even after creating more layers, the layer palette still does not show up.
when i draw stuff in a panel from the panel window, the stuff outside the box is supposed to disappear right? on the red? it isn't... is there some feature that isn't on or am i doing it wrong? can you make a video showing the sketching and inking process?
@ducktoi666 I thought that was a legit link but freeing the page (which I did just by deactivating the divs in the way) just revealed a link to a warez site. Not cool.
@Stitchpuppy01 Once the panel is created and is it's own layer, you just have to drag the layer to the New Layer button, which will create a duplicate layer.
can i import images and put it in one panel?? I would like to scan images and import them in pdf format or convert them.. doesnt matter and put them in pannels.
@VoidEmptyFalse It really is a matter of choice. I recommend that you do the panels first, based on the script, but that you do not set them in stone before drawing. That way, you can figure out which panels need to be bigger for action or emphasis, and you can work your composition inside it, adjusting the panel if need be. If you draw the action before you give it a frame, your comic will lack form and may be difficult to read.
Oh man I'm so glad I've searched Manga Studio tutorials here on YT and found your videos! I've had this software in my PC for more than a year and haven't really explored it. Thanks a lot, CoffeStained! This really helps :)
@subaru2022 Sorry for the late reply. When you create a panel layer, there will be two aspects to it. The top layer will be the panel lines. You can erase this as you wish. There will also be a layer mask, which you will have to paint transparent to draw outside the predefined bounds.
can someone PLEASE direct me to someone or a tutorial on how to use manga studio debut 4!!!!??? i want to start but im having a hard time with it any hint would be greatly appreciated!XD
Hi, is there a way for the panels to go off the page? So there are no borders essentially but there are still some panels mixed in? And for Manga Studio Debut.
Nice tutorial. When isolating a panel with mask, I assume you can add layers for just that panel, right?
Also, would you consider demonstrating the perspective tool? I'm finding it very confusing. Right now I can do perspective much faster the old fashioned way.
I'm looking for some help with layers on Manga studio ex 4. It seems drastically different, and I'm almost tempted to downgrade back to Manga Studio ex3
I have a huge problem with Manga Studio. I can do everything you just showed us but... My problem lies with actually drawing IN the panels.
I use a tablet, I can draw in the panel but, it will suddenly stop and I can't get it to draw. I tried to find the settings for drawing on there but I can't find it...

Hi Coffee Stained, was wondering about buying MS but need advice...
What is the advantage of using Manga Studio over other paint programs? ...I have Paint Shop Pro 8, Photo Shop CS and also Gimp 2 and find that my comic style drawings fairly good, though the panels and speech bubbles are difficult to do.
Is MS better than these for speeding up the work load, and how about resizing and color?
It's a personal choice, the dimensions given are standards in Japan. If you don't live in Japan (I don't.), then you are best off creating your own dimensions based on the printing method you choose. For example, Ka-Blam!, a popular print-on-demand publisher, posts it's specs online and that's what I use, because Ka-Blam! is the publisher I intend to print with.
Are any of your palettes showing? Try hitting 'Tab' if your palettes are hidden. If they are showing, try moving them around, they may be overlapping the Tools palette and hiding it. You can also go to 'Window' menu and 'Reset all Palettes Positions'. Hope on of these helps!
I know someone probably already asked this, but, is this Manga studio EX? Or is it 3.0? Because I have 3.0 and I tried drawing after I made the panels, and it glitched up and color in the lines.
YAY! thank you for this tut!=) I have been wanting to start my webcomic FOREVER but I just can't do it with my beloved photoshop! I AM DEF going to buy MS!=)
5 stars for showing us the panel features of MS!!you rock!
oh this was of great use I just installed manga studio and know nothing about it xD Thanks xD if you're able to do a more in-detail complexe tutorial it'd ba awesome if not then I'll have to search some more xD
If you are short on cash or are just draw as a hobby, MSD is probably good enough. If you are planning on publishing, I would almost say MSEX is a must-have.
This is an excellent program for producing comic-book b&w art. In fact, Manga Studio EX is used by many manga and comic-book professional artists to either supplement or completely replace the traditional work flow. A Wacom is a good investment, but MSEX and MSD (Manga Studio Debut) both accommodate mouse drawing nicely as well.
In your layer options palette you have the ability to change 'Display Colour' from grayscale to colour. You then can choose an alternative to black and to white. (You have to paint white onto a layer, which is otherwise transparent.)
whenever i try to use this to actually make a comic it pisses me off and i dont use it for a long time then the same thing happens when i decide to try again

What's the best template for the page because there are so many I don't know which to choose!
venuslourdes 2 years ago
It's a personal choice, the dimensions given are standards in Japan. If you don't live in Japan (I don't.), then you are best off creating your own dimensions based on the printing method you choose. For example, Ka-Blam!, a popular print-on-demand publisher, posts it's specs online and that's what I use, because Ka-Blam! is the publisher I intend to print with.

For some odd reason I can't open my layers window it suddenly just.. stopped showing up..
Do you know how I can fix this?
DanBiaRob 2 years ago
Do you have other palette windows open? If not, try pressing tab. If others are open, I'm not sure of the problem.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but is there a place I can adjust the settings for the lines for the panels and the spaces between panels?

my panels aren't visible when they print or get saved as a .jpg file. how do i create a border without the obvious box tool?
TawnyOwl 2 years ago
Are you using MS EX 3.0?
CoffeeStained 2 years ago
yes, but i already solved my problem-- i was using the panel tool on the menu instead of the panel layer with the vutter tool. i think that was it~
thanks so much for the video

awesome! so which kind of studio are you using? is it possible to do this with the gimp?
feather1100 2 years ago
The name of the program is Manga Studio, and I don't think that a majority of it's functions would be easily done in Gimp.
CoffeeStained 2 years ago

For Manga Studio is it difficult to import pictures that is made my hand?
Japanesegurl6 3 years ago
No. You just pick new page. Pick the page, then go to file, import, image, then pick your image.

Uhh...Whenever I click on tools palette icon the tools palette never appears? Help! I'm not going to be able to use it if I can't fix it... :(
shadowjoker8 3 years ago
Are any of your palettes showing? Try hitting 'Tab' if your palettes are hidden. If they are showing, try moving them around, they may be overlapping the Tools palette and hiding it. You can also go to 'Window' menu and 'Reset all Palettes Positions'. Hope on of these helps!

Omigosh, Thanks so much! this was a great help! I will be using my manga studio a lot more now.
OtAkUxcHaN 3 years ago
I know someone probably already asked this, but, is this Manga studio EX? Or is it 3.0? Because I have 3.0 and I tried drawing after I made the panels, and it glitched up and color in the lines.

How do you draw on those layers
Brevincampbell12 3 years ago
It's the same as any other image editing program.
CoffeeStained 3 years ago
YAY! thank you for this tut!=) I have been wanting to start my webcomic FOREVER but I just can't do it with my beloved photoshop! I AM DEF going to buy MS!=)

monsterEyesPro 3 years ago
And the the 2D and 3D features ? sorry for the questions
PkMnJp20 3 years ago
Yes i am a hobby drawing person.... but the drawing realism is the same in both ex and debut ?! And waht's the screen tone thing
PkMnJp20 3 years ago
screen tones were used to make shadows in the novel
monsterEyesPro 3 years ago
And about the options and features ?! The debut does the same thing?!
PkMnJp20 3 years ago
You'll have to look it up on smith-micro, There is not enough room to do a feature comparison here, EX has a LOT more going on.
CoffeeStained 3 years ago
oh this was of great use I just installed manga studio and know nothing about it xD Thanks xD if you're able to do a more in-detail complexe tutorial it'd ba awesome if not then I'll have to search some more xD
RukiaTenshi 3 years ago
And whats the best MSD or MSEX ?! The price is really diferent but i don't know what to choose :(
PkMnJp20 3 years ago
If you are short on cash or are just draw as a hobby, MSD is probably good enough. If you are planning on publishing, I would almost say MSEX is a must-have.
CoffeeStained 3 years ago
Is this program good ?! You know for drawing and all ?!
PkMnJp20 3 years ago
This is an excellent program for producing comic-book b&w art. In fact, Manga Studio EX is used by many manga and comic-book professional artists to either supplement or completely replace the traditional work flow. A Wacom is a good investment, but MSEX and MSD (Manga Studio Debut) both accommodate mouse drawing nicely as well.
CoffeeStained 3 years ago
how do i assign a layer a color?
TheDareDevil5 3 years ago
In your layer options palette you have the ability to change 'Display Colour' from grayscale to colour. You then can choose an alternative to black and to white. (You have to paint white onto a layer, which is otherwise transparent.)
CoffeeStained 3 years ago
your video was interesting. I read a tuto with the same content but didn't understand...so thank you for your little video!
