  • Odd comment didn't post. Nice video, would you be willing to do a video on the antenna and how to build it? Studying for my tech license and friend giving me a radio, would love to say I built my own antenna with your directions

  • @OneStudPuppy

Give me your email address and I'll send you the instructions on how to build it. It's easy.

  • Would you be willing to do a how to on the antenna, studying my my tech license right now. A friend of mine is giving me a rig. Would love to be able to say I built my own antenna with your directions of course.

  • Nice video.

  • Hello,Barry.....I have the Icom 703+ xcvr also with a 500hz filter.I was curious about the antenna. Is this a homebrew vertical or commercial application?....Also keep up the good work on your videos. They are really informative to ham and non hams alike.73.Dennis/W7KB.

  • @redman840

This is a home brew vertical. It's a B&W coil but you can get any 35 micro henry coil to do the same job. Glad you enjoyed the video.

  • Good job Barry!!!

Can you give us more details on your antenna Including coil information?

  • Yes that antenna definatly works!

It never seases to amaze me how well short vericals can work. Under sone conditions my homebrew 5 meter tall vertical actualy out performs my w3edp wire antenna on the same frequency (not often though).

  • Those 703's are sweet rigs, I just ordered one myself.

What's that antenna you're running off the back of the set, did you toss that together your self or is there a place I can pick one up?

Looks like a nice compact antenna instead of lugging a buddipole around all the time. Thanks for sharing Barry!

  • I am sure you are going to enjoy your IC-703, I love mine. The antenna on the back of the rig is home brew. I put together a PDF explaining what and where you can get the material to make one. It's a fun and easy to make project. I also put together a table top portable antenna and I used it with my FT-897D. Look at my other videos and you'll see the newer model.

  • Nice videos Barry, I have a 703 have worked some amazing stuff well down under 1 watt. Need to get mine out portable.

  • Thanks for your comments. I can't wait for the snow to melt and the temp to go up so I can go portable again. Setting up portable is simple and fun. You will love it.

I've worked into Europe with only 1/2 watt already. But.....with the band conditions not up to par yet, I am sticking with 5 watts.

  • I did something like this with a cb radio and a 102 inch stainless steel whip on my mountain bike using a Yuasa NP 12-12 12ah battery. I made a couple skip shots on it from here in Philadelphia two a couple states to the south and west diresctions. It performed equally as good as a friends mobile set up in his car, after we both talked to the same station about 4-5 miles away. My next feat is to try and homebrew a beam, since money is tight.

  • nice quality receiving....

  • Hi Barry,

Great video. Quality is also very good. Thanks for the link.

  • The 703 is a fantastic little radio .

  • I had an FT 817 and loved it. But the 703 has DSP, Pre amp, memory keyer and a tuner. I don't need the tuner but it's there.
