FYI.... Smart meters are not "smart". They are the same old meters that have always been there, they just have a communication module installed. This allows them to send the same reading into the utility without them haveing to send a person out there to read it. They could get the exact same usage information by sending the meter reader out there everyday....again, I repeat, the meters are not smart.....they have no intelligence, they only register how much electricity is used.
smart meters are not really properly defined yet. It depends who you are and where you are ... i.e. the definition is not the same with everyone. Even Wikipedia states the definition is "according to so and so"
This is a electric usage monitor not a smart meter...A smart meter will be fitted by your electric supplier by 2020 and will relay your usage back to them and supposedly help you reduce your usage....Oh they say reduce your usage because you wont reduce your bill actually it will go up because of the cost of installing them and running costs of the network....and yes i work for a power company and yes its a big scam

Here in MAINE CMP used Stimulus money (for creating jobs) to restart their "smart meter" program that they could not afford before but now can, leading to cutting meter reader jobs. USED STIMULUS MONEY TO CUT JOBS.
oh that things cool, i dont think we can use one because here in australia all the wires are hidden in the wall the only things in our meter box visible is the meter and switch board...
they arent a government scam, i know cos im currently testing the software in one. And to outcasts09, solong as you know your cost per kWh it should be fairly accurate. Ive got one on trial in my house and it has better featues than that one and looks better. Also the company i work for are integrating them with the meters so you would have 100% accuracy and with a wireless comms system (e.g. SMS meter) they can even send you a message to the device display.
it's just another government scam to tell you what you can do in your own home ! i'm sure they will bust alot of pot growers with this nifty gadget LOL !

not all meters will do this, this will most likely be given to repeat offenders
at least that's what the hydro company I am working for is doing its to costly to give everybody one of those meters as they require more parts
