@PHANTOMSLAYER77 It's one of those oven roasting turkey bags which is actually a different material than regular plastic. over time it will get brittle. Helps to keep the oven lightweight and easy to move around.
Thanks for sharing all your experiments solarnut, I've tried all designs for 3 days and nothing cooked well, except for biscuits in a long glass pasta jar. i was about to try the dangerous parabola trough cooker next. Instead I will try your designs, I like how safe they are and also great for frying
@HoWilliam50 I use turkey oven roasting bags, which are resistant to melting and don't gas off. If you used regular plastic, it would indeed melt and you would smell fumes.
Thanx for information/inspiration. I built a large sun oven, placed granite offcuts /slate tiles & metal grillers. I heated granite/tiles first then added heated metal - was left in the sun while rocks heated. Then food. Oven was East/West orientation - ahead of the sun. Worked well. Oven reached 220F. I need now to learn how long various food takes to cook. It's only day 2 of cooking and Summer is nearly here. Lot's of cooking to come!
Dan Rohas mad a solar oven from some cooler doors he found discarded somewhere he mad a solar oven the size of C store doors his channel is GREENPOWERSCIENCE you would love the huge oven he made. I saw a man made one out of an old bath tub. He could bake many loaves of bread in his oven. One of the best designs I have seen was made from a 55gallon metal barrel it is used in Cuba as a pizza oven. Solar cooking is great if you know you are gonna have a good day for it and here most days are good.
@cdltpx I really enjoy Greenpowerscience. Dan gets the message out there and gets people thinking. I have the book of the fella that made the oven out of the freezer or bathtub. He baked alot of bread in that oven! It sure does help to live in an area where you get alot of sun. Even if you don't, on the days you can solar cook, makes all the more a treat to get the oven out and watch the miracle!
@solarcookingnut I never got a book I was in the process of getting it he requested a credit card I wanted to find another way and he lost it cause I was cautious about giving CC information over wire then he got ugly really mean not I dont care how smart you are you dont treat people like he did me I tried to get his book at the library but they couldnt even get interlibrary loan so I gave up. I will not deal with him he is too rude. Since I have established an acct with a cc just for online.
@cdltpx See I might be square now but I will be around later we have not had any banking issues because of my caution and we have been able to pay off all our bills as a result sure we still pat electricity insurance etc but anything else we are good. I dont consider my self rich but we are not where near being homeless. What I was thinking is someone coul cook batches of food with a huge solar oven like a turkey a roast sack of taters them freeze the meals one day cookoff.
@solarcookingnut I sent you a PM from your home page in the last one there is a website I know you would put to good use you will be impressed at the gold mine that was right there at your feet.
@cdltpx Im sorry the web site I told you about has been down all weekend and IDK if they will come back up I am a member paid to be one and still cant get on. They may have their sever based in an area that is out of power IDK what the problem is but I hate to tell you about something and you go there and cant get on. You were not slow on your reply not everyone has an I fon in their pocket alerting them they have a comment. Some have a life like you Set my solar panels so far so good.
thank you. i just got the stuff to make the 'pizza box left-overs heater', 1-the box, 2- black craft paper 3-foil 4-plastic wrap ( i am using glass instead, i don't like heating plastic). spposedly i can also bake cookies on the car windshield with this ( will take hours instead of minutes) , but when traveling, who cares? i just bought a fresnal lens ( kinda a magnifying glass) with with to boil water. this is fun!!!!!
so, one only has to have the 1 reflector? many ovens have 4. is that becuz it's so large? inside your cardboard box, what is teh black surface made from? for teh reflector, is there a difference between using aluminum or mylar?
@ophuichus2012 Hi! Yes, one reflector works just fine. The temps reach 200 which is plenty hot for cooking. The lower the temps, the more nutrients are kept in the foods, and the flavors are really enhanced! You can add more reflectors, I just try to keep things simple. the more reflectors with cardboard ovens is you have to deal with winds if you don't make them in one unit. this is more portable.
@ophuichus2012 mylar is a bugger to glue to anything because of its shiney surface, so I use foil, though I am saving mylar, hoping to get some spray adhesive to apply it.
the black interior is simply cardboard panels, with foil glued and wrapping the panels, then painted simply with non toxic acrylic paint you get in the craft section at walmart. I also found black roasting racks from oven pans to set in too. they are enamelled. I hope this helps you.
you have the very best videos on this topic...i really appreciate your efforts and hope to cook more with mine...and encourage others build one for themselves!
@centervilletn Thank you so much! Really appreciate the positive input! It's really a wonderful way to cook! I see you have been busy with yours. Keep it up and spreading the word!
I think that being criticisesd and having to fight for your thing is part of taking part in the race. It is easier to take if you have been warned that people do criticise new things. Really it gives you an opportunity to go on explaining as you answer their criticism. Don't let them do it too much though or they'll do you down. You have white foam under the oven to aisolate it from the ground don't you? rose macaskie.
yes, you do have to stand firm against the nay sayers. they are the ones who actually sit and have lots to say and never were involved in doing what they criticize, funny how people do that.
Yes, the oven is sitting on a foam box, but the bottom of the oven isn't hot, perfectly safe. I NEVER though use foam inside an oven, the toxic fumes would be dangerous. Hope you are doing well.
love your stuff...even though im working on solar home heating...actually what u didnt realize is that u have more than one reflector on your oven....its just that your design has "inside" side reflectors and thats why u got good heat even at a off angle. i happy today..i had a new proto type hit 365F today in ohio..maybe u could use it for an oven.:)..peace, michael.
I love the idea that you can use a single box and then pop in your insulating panels. The size you can make is endless! We have a large family so Im making a really large one. Right now i have a large jar (painted black) cooking brown rice in my windshield reflector "funnel" cooker. Instructions can be found on the internet for making a $5 reflector cooker. Keep the videos coming!
I love your work and I took to heart what you said about eye protection.
What you are saying in this video is that "the larger the oven, the larger the ratio or percentage of light to shadow, when an oven is at an off angle to the sun".
Well, up to a point.
Once again, love your videos, and keep happy
gaburley
I found some mylar, plastic , silver stuff, unfortunately, I can't get a glue to stick to it, so it is just sitting in the corner with these perfect boxes for my next oven.
The eye protection is really really important. I just watched a new video today of these people thinking it was funny how they were getting flashed by the reflectors! when using mylar, buy some spray adhesive, this will make it stick better. Thank you for watching!
this is a single box oven, with pop in panels. each panel is simply another piece of cardboard, cut to fit, with a small pad of newspapers cut to same size, then covered with heavy duty foil, painted black with craft acrylic paint you would find at walmart in the craft section, pop in, then add a few black metal pans in the floor on racks to absorb more heat. its lightweight and easy to move around.
@solarcookingnut Is it safe (non-toxic) to use painted panels? does the paint smell weird when heated up? i am thinking of making some ceramic panels ( tiles cut to shape). they won't be as big as yours, but, it's an experiment. maybe my local welder could cut some dark cookie sheets to size for the panels....

What is the temp difference between the oven being aligned and being off alignment by 90°?
macrumpton 2 years ago
usually between 25-50 degrees, depending on how clear the sky is. If I keep it aimed FACE ON to the sun, the temps will stay 225-250 consistently.
200 is still a great temp to cook at, slow, but stil great for especially tenderizing meat by slow cooking it.
