It is true that this was one of Paul Whiteman's favorites and it was indeed played at his funeral. Whiteman had discovered Robert Katscher's tune "Madonna" during a European tour and had B G. De Sylva write English lyrics and titled it "When Day is Done." When Katscher died in 1942, Whiteman's concert strings played this tune at Katscher's memorial service.
I'm aware of the trip to Europe, his study, and the Town Hall concert. I recall the review I read as polite but not enthusiastic. I'm unaware of any recordings after his work with the major companies ended about 1930. He was only 26 years old.
I understand Baur spent over a year studying voice and French art songs in Paris in the early 1930's. And this was followed on his return to NYC with a recital at Town Hall on December 4, 1933, during which he performed works by Debussy and others. Do you know if any recordings of these French songs exist? They would be fascinating to hear. Sincere thanks for all of your Baur uploads!
Bob, thank you so much, it's very sweet of you! I definitely enjoy it. This is my favorite torch song that means so much to me, and Baur's performance is so touching & delicate.... I've always loved both the melody & the lyrics of this song - they go so well together. I don't know what the original German lyrics were like but I think that the English are amazing. There's another verse that's often omitted. I know that some crooners sang it (Sinatra, Como).
My day has just ended, and in such a lovely way with your beautiful clip of one of my favorite songs and definitely one of my favorite vocalists!! Thank you, Bob!
A sweet rendition of this old classic. Wonderful. What a fine tenor he had, and the ability to hit that beautiful high note at the end.
Thanks for this

this is our favorite baur solo...such a bittersweet romantic song. (think it was played at whiteman's funeral; evidently a favorite of his, too.)
