Okay so im lookin to get a nikon finally because i had a canon rebel and grew out of that so quick, but now im debating on which nikon i should get d1h, d40,d60,d80 ect. I'm looking for something i wont grow out of , what do you think i should do? I enjoy the 3-5 fps factor.
You are forgetting one improtant advantage of the D40 over ALL other Nikon and Canon DSLRS. IT has a max. flash sync speed of 1/500 sec while all others are between 1/200 and 1/250 sec. THi si significant for fast flash fill in photography and rapid movement (kids) indoors flash photography with a capable flash. Why Nikon does not offer this in their newer models is a mystery to me!
hey I have the d80 and Im a beginner but I have learned a lot. I wanted to know if theres anyway I can take like 5 shots back to back without clicking multiple times. What settings should i have it on?
I went from the Nikkormat Ft2 to F301 to F601 to the D40. So its not true that the D40 is for beginners! The D40 is astonishing value for money and can produce amazing images. Dont worry about 'only' 6 megapixels. They are big beautifull pixels and CCD too! You wont get any noise at even 1600 asa. Rush out and buy a D40 before they stop making them.
Megapixels mean next to nothing once you get into the field of DSLR's as opposed to point and shoot cameras. What really matters in a DSLR is it's image sensor, which is nearly the same in both the d40 and d60
@904SF I have owned BOTH A D40 and a D60 camera...So I know what I am talking about!
The D40 is a super camera.. I KID YOU NOT!
Megapixels dont mean jack shit... I havea 14 MP point and shoot camera which I carry everywhere as a "Back up" camera.. It is only used as a back up camera beause my D40 beats it HANDS DOWN. If I am going out with the intention of taking photos I use my D40. What a cracking camera the D40 is.
I am not trying to be a dick, but why do you say that it is always best to go with a lower end SLR for first time SLR users? Doesn't it depend on what the person is planning on doing with their camera? If someone aspires to be a pro photographer and has the money to drop on a D300 I say go for it. The basics are the same on any SLR, no matter the cost.
the only reason I say that is because I am glad I went with a lower end dslr first. If I had gone with the d200 or d2x three years ago I would have been very disappointed because I would have had no idea how to use it properly to get my moneys worth out of them. Basic DSLRs get you used to the camera and once you know what you like to take pictures of you can go for a better camera that fits your needs.
I do understand your reasoning. I guess I just think more along the lines of making one purchase on a higher end body as a 4-5 year investment, and learning only the basics first, no matter how many extra features the camera has. Great videos by the way. I really enjoyed the D300 v. D90 video. It was very informative.
I disagree. I think that serious beginners should invest in a more capable body than the D40. Not only will you have more options for lenses since the D40 does not have an internal motor, but Non-HSM/AF-S lenses will not auto focus.
Skipping the D40/D60 line up and getting a D80 or D90 is a much smarter investment. You also have a bigger curve and more options allowing you to grow.
Although the D40 lacks an internal motor, a serious beginner should have no problem learning manual focus abilities. Price also is a factor, D40 is definitely worth every penny to get someone interested in photography.
The thing is... even though now I have a D700. When I first got into the DSLR world, my first camera was the D80. And even then, it took me only 3 months to outgrow all the functions. I was yearning for faster AF, more customizable options, Better ISO perf, and a more professional body.
Get a body [if you are serious about photography] that will allow you to maximize your growth. Because you dont want to waste buying another body after you've outgrown your old one.
mattlord, the d80 is fully compatible with all lenses. It is a step up from the camera I have, the D50, and even the D50 is fully compatible with all nikkor lenses. Maybe you meant the D60-- I'm pretty sure that camera can only use af-s lenses for autofocusing
I just checked out your pictures on diviantart. You are an amazing photographer. I would buy some photos from you but I'm broke from buying some of my own camera gear. Keep up the great work. Thanks.
I have to decline, the 50 mm AF-D f 1.8 is a great lens at a great price which everybody should own... D60 owners are no exception, regardless of the lack of autofocus (trust me, I know)
Easy, because the 50 mm 1.8 AF-D has no in-lens focus engine and the D60 has no internal focus mechanism, whereas the D80 has one and, therefore, can autofocus with it :)
Quick and no BS review! One question, can I attach anything to my D40? Just got it 2 months ago and wondering if I can "move up" without buying a new Nikon. Thanks!
Wonderful review. Thanks! I'm looking at the Nikon D40 for a Christmas present. I'm in 7th grade and really like photography. Thanks again for your great insight.
Great review of the range. Very interesting comparisons too. Thank you. Only six months later and we now have the D700 and D90! All great kit, make no mistake!
You speak about the number of megapixels being irrelevant, but you forget that postprocessing may require cropping an image, therefore the difference kind of stands out :)
hi! do you think you could make a video of your battery grip? is it the MB-D10? is so, PLEASE make a video. short video showing a 360 view and functions. of course when you have the time. thanks man! like your videos!
man it makes me want to upgrade from my D80! question - if I add the grip to my D80, will it increase FPS like the 300 does? it's the one thing I'm very disappointed with on this body.
The grip makes the camera a little more comfortable to hold and helps balance when hand-holding a heavy lens (like my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR) but other than that it's not worth the cost of the grip and the extra battery.
I've yet to kill the D80 on a single charge, so the extra battery doesn't really help much. Why not just carry a spare in your pocket?
Great presentation. One question: you say that I cannot use my old non AF lenses with the D40 or D60..and I can understand that they won't auto focus with those bodies..but can I use them and facus manually? How does the D80 autofocus these non AF lenses?
I like the fact that you didn't bash away at the D40 in this review, and instead talked about what it's capable of. I own the D40, and as I think I said on one of your other videos, I consider myself an advanced amateur. People bash on it all the time because it's cheap, but I don't think those people realize just what it's capable of. Most of them probably have never even used one. If you don't need absolute speed in every aspect of your photography, it's a wonderful camera.
Dude, nice review, however you didnt seem to mention anything about the D200. I know it is now discontinued, but still, you mentioned "Entire Nikon range starting from D40 all the way to D300 and D3. Also you missed out on the new D700 announced July 1st 2008. Still good review though. Thanks
Canon builds good cameras but Nikon offers better range models. Futhermore, Nikon has a one or two years advance on Canon.
For example, even the D200 is a bit better than the 40D, these two cameras are comparable. The first one was launched in 2005~2006, and the second one a year after.
The only problem with Nikon is the price.
Nikon's lenses and camera body too are too expensive.
Just in case anyone asks I am working on the lens lineup reviews. I am going to be making several videos for this one subject so it will probably take a while. I am also leaving in a few days and will be unable to make videos for over a month.
I don't review canon but the rebel is also a great camera as well. The rebel xsi is 750 dollars. the d40 is 450 dollars. The d40 doesn't do as mush as the xsi, but it is cheaper.
