  • Aphoristic style is great if you want acolytes, because an aphorism can sound very wise without saying much, and you can often get away without justifying what you say.

Aphoristic style is lousy, though, if you want to do good philosophy.

  • Oh, shit. I think I just wrote that in an aphoristic style.

    Oh, well.

  • lol, you demagogue!

  • I agree that's the danger, but in the hands of a great philosopher that is not using it to escape the need for strong reason, it is a great thing, a chance to be succinct.

  • Maybe the Great Philosopher should write two books, one aphoristic to attract the acolytes, and one prosaic, to forestall schismatic wars among the acolytes over matters of interpretation.

  • interesting, I'd love to have a chance to read a philosopher's works from such different angles.

  • I am so going to start making 10 second aphrostic style videos! - Seriously, I was thining about it today. Most of the philosophical papers that I read consist of around 30pages of words, and 3lines of philosophy!

  • I agree. But instead of aphorism, what about making use of infographics as a tool of communication in philosophy? Animated infographics. As condense and to the point as aphorism, but far less in need of heavy interpretative work to unlock.

  • I'm a big fan of that style.

  • Good grief you're prolific.....

  • I suppose preparing for 20 years means it takes less preparation now. That and low production values.

  • Nietzsche is very unorthodox and ambiguous to me, i really need to revisit this guy a few more times.

  • Well he's right you know, look, professor Moe Howard did it so why can't you? '-'

  • lol

If that was what Kevin said then yeah; it was a bit glib...

I know where he's coming from, but he's basically off-hadedly offended & belittled YOUR PASSION.

Asking for trouble that, Kevin ¦:¬|»

  • not only are you getting at refining your position recently (imo), ive had quite a few laughs watching you recently.

  • well, that sounds good...

  • laughing with. im both a bit embarrassed and apologetic for that spat earlier this year. bad time for me, but no excuse. you don't need to say anything, just wanted to put that in words.

  • You're going to die really, really soon. What is important?

  • my imminent demise? and the fact that I think a cup of tea might be nice?...?!

  • I always knew there was an englishman in you somewhere pyrrho.

  • yes, in a holding cell guarded by one of my polynesian ancestors
