  • I was just wondering this because on Jeggs I was looking at new cylender heads and it says I may need .100 or something like that , longer push rods. Thanks.

  • I was under the impression the length should be checked when the intake lifter goes up and back down and the piston is at TDC , you have to continue to turn the crank a bit. This is also the proper time to install both the intake and exhaust rocker. Thoughts?

  • Very informative and many thanks for taking the time to share your experience, much appreciated.

  • I came up with the same pushrod legth (6.35) so far have not been finding that length what did u use? Im doing this on some old castings twisted wedge heads

  • Not to nit pick, but your pattern on the valve tip appeared to be very narrow and only in the center. It would lead me to think your not getting the full swing and thus may not be getting the full potential lift from your cam. Now I could be wrong as it was kind of hard to see from the video, but that is what it looked like. Also, for anyone new to this, when you first start and are looking for the exhaust valve to open, a dial indicator can be really helpful to see when it first starts to open.

  • do u remember what size of push rod did u get??

  • Nice vid man. Gets right to the point. Thanks!

  • Nice video, but you have to use a solid lifter to get the proper pushrod length, which would make your pushrod shorter again.

  • nice video!! this is exactly what the first time builder needs to see. The haters need to post their superior video or just shut up!! Everyone has a different way to do things and this is his way!

  • Great video, I'm getting all the knowledge I can before i start on a 5.3. =) Thanks again!

  • do you have to measure each cylinder ?

  • @ChrisXCXCX No just one cylinder, i believe his mark theory is backwards tho, to long and the mark will be at the top of the valve and to short and it will be near the bottom, correct me if im wrong, no matter how old and experienced you are you never quit learning, and many things you learn two or three times, experience is something you get just after you need it!!!!

  • Thanks for the Vid. Putting new heads on my 351W, and the comp tool is what I'm using. Very helpful!

  • Ted needs lessons on grammar and punctuation. Which grade level did you complete school through? BTW Thanks for the video. I'm putting gt40 heads on my 289 and need to get the pushrods right. Thanks

  • Good video....but wouldn't you want everything torqued down? After all you are talking about thousand's clearance. By torquing down the stud you can easy get another thousand or 2 out of it, that would change your clearance on your push rod......glad to see some one trying and posting on youtube.....thanks.

  • Finding zero lash by feel leaves the assembler at the mercy of too many variables that affect consistancy. Here is a little tip passed on to me by Barry Seton in 1985.Adjust the valve clearance to 5thou.,then turn the rocker nut down3/4 of a turn.

  • ANDREW SHALLALA.......I hope you finally get the whole "adjustable pushrod" thing now.I guess there is only so much you can learn from reading Street Machine magazine. P.S. Good video,Sir.

  • That was informative....good job!

  • for your safety on your next video, get a 4 wheeled stand man. hate to see you ruin that motor or your feet.

  • Great vid thanks. My 351W in my 94 Cobra has aftermarket heads (will soon) and a custom grind cam so this is a must for me to do this.

  • Very clear vid. I was hunting around trying to get a plain explanation of pushrod length and that was it. Thanks!!

  • what ya running for heads?

  • great vid..thx..

  • Awesome video. Sometimes things like this you HAVE to see, and nobody has wanted to take the time to show me. Seriously, thanks.

  • Also a note to your Awesome work for this video ...Is in the event your running a high lift cam solid roller a light spring should be used in replacement of your heavy valve springs,Also in hydraulic roller a solid lifter can be used for the testing for you push rod length just because if the lifter is not pumped up it will suck down into the lifter, Great video

  • cant you just use an old one and measure using a feeler guage and buy right length to meet specs

  • Well done man that was brilliant help to me. Just bent my push rod on a fresh engine. So I'm in the same boat as you. Best way to learn is to do, keep up the good work. Luke - 1960 Imperial

  • Hello, Answer me this question. If I buy a cam pushrods and lifters and rockers in a complete set. Would I have to worry about having the correct pushrod length

  • so ...let me get this straight ...you total experience is ..your failure to do it right the first time and your not running 'Don't know if I screwed it a second time' ...you gotta love you tube

  • Who claimed to have tons of experience? Figured out the right way on my own and thought I would share it to help others. I'm going back out to work on my car now why you sit at your computer slamming people, thinking, hoping, and wishing that you had a life at 55 years old? geeze!

  • @a95850 Yep,55,..raced Sprint cars and built motors [12 to date] for each car....last one 780 hp-turning 8400 and ran 30 races between overhauls -never granaded...and guess what ..I ain't qualified to make a video telling inexperienced people how I 'think 'it should be done...you bought a big cam and aftermarket al.head...are the springs matched to the cam..are you going into coil bind..did you check piston to valve clearance. buy chromemoly 0.080 pushrods -the correct length-check the rest

  • @ted850760 give the guy a break. He took time out of HIS day to try and help someone by learning from his mistakes and you're getting onto him? WOW. You're pathetic.

Thank you a9580 for posting the video!

  • @ted850760 at least he is learning, and your a douche bag

  • did u used a solid lifter? also do you have the part number on the pushrod lenght checker? thanks great vid..

  • This is a very siple, informative video. It explained it well to me. Thank you.

  • Thanks alot dude! This is exactly what I was looking for. I actually have a 302 I'm building for the first time too!

  • great video. MAde it very easy to understand.

  • When you have the pushrods in place and tightened down should you be able to spin them with you fingers. I just changed my lower intake gaskets and found that i was able to spin them , theres no up and down play at all. Sometimes they can be a bit noisy.

  • I'm curious how the incorrect pushrod lenght damaged your engine? Usually if you have a longer valve, you run a longer pushrod to correct the angle. Trend, Jesel and other companies can help with valve train problems.

  • Thanks alot. Im dealing with this issue right now on my 351. Its nice to be able to see it done.

  • excellent video. I'm building a new engine for my daily driver and I can't afford any mistakes. Thank you.

  • Thanks a ton for this video. I'm going to measure my pushrod length on my smallblock Chevy today. I have a better understanding after watching your video.

    Thanks again!

  • thanks a lot bud I've been building a 460 and even after talking to a couple people who've done this I was still unclear on a few things..the video was perfect

  • I want to try to do more vids. If you want something specific, let me know.

  • Thanks Bud!

  • cool!
