I've Travelled from LA to Narita Japan in this model of plane, but they are very uncomfortable in economy class and the internal noise is terrible, I think important new aircraft for Unied Airlines.
@speakfoolish OMG I was on my way to Beijing from Ohare and the same thing happened to my flight! I watched to fences at the end of the runway like 10 feet under the plane... by far the scariest thing I've been through. and I'm a paratrooper in the Army lol I've jumped out of perfectly good airplanes and no jump was freaker than my flight to Beijing!
@n2bracing2 OMG is right! Having worked for United I can tell you that the ORD-NRT Flight is one of the most lucrative flights in operation. Freight alone even if the flight flew empty would still make a profit for the Airline. So you know that they have Maximum Fuel, Passengers and as much Cargo as they can safely load. I didn't think about that until "V-1" and Rotation were not happening and I stiffled a bit of a panic.
@DA20c1flyboy I dunno, I think it depnds on the individual plane. I fly Southwest the most so I usually don't get a chance to select a channel on an airplane.
I experienced a heavy 747-400 take off last week from ICN to ATL. I almost thought the plane was going to stall in drive into the pacific do to it's slow ascend. lol
@HDJamieProductions United allows passengers on all flights (except those on the 767 fleet) to listen to ATC communications with the aircraft you are on via your headphones. However it is at the discretion of the Captain who can disable the feature at any time.
@HDJamieProductions It is easy, record two audio and put them together. One on the plane and one on the plane. Then counts the time and make a new video.
32L is shorter than it use to be. Now only 9,685 feet. Runway 10/28 is the longest at ORD -- just over 13,000 feet. It was shortened in spring/summer 2010.
@fuzz30 no, that the aircraft has a gross weight of over 300,000 pounds, but typically that tag is attached to any widebody (twin aisle) aircraft and to boeing 757s.
@fuzz30 no, heavy just basically states weather the aircraft in question, in this case a Boeing 747-400, by the pilots saying "heavy" they mean that the aircraft has 2 or more isles in the cabin. (but can be anything from a Boeing 767...777...747 an Airbus A330...340 and the upcoming 350). The only "heavy" aircraft that i know of that can't hold the name heavy is the Airbus A380, it holds the name "super" just because it's so big.
@Airplanefinder This is false. "Heavy" simply indicated wake turbulence category. A 757 can be classified as a heavy and it only has a single isle. It has nothing to with seat configuration. These "heavies" are susceptible to produce a large amount of wake turbulence. Everything from a C5 Galaxy to a B2 bomber and 757 can be a "heavy".
@DIGITALSCREAMS The 747 is a very safe airliner and just relax,trust me just go on with the flight...You don't have to worry about any kind of insurance...Flying is the second most safest mode of travel.
Fascinating - I measured 9700 ft (2956 m) roll in 62 seconds (courtesy of Google Earth and my computer's clock). What I just now learned is that 32L has since been shortened, and 9R/27L has been renamed 08/26 and lengthened to 13kft (3962m) to accommodate these super-heavy, super-long-haul flights. (And a new runway parallel to 08/26 is being built.) Sorry if this has been discussed earlier in the comments. Thank you, rodgerjohnson, for sharing this excellent video.
@xGeminiXII I've travelled from Australia to the USA many times on United. United get you to where you're going in one piece & their staff are friendly. However, their 747 fleet are showing their age inside. They BADLY need to update their in-flight entertainment & tacky 80's decor. United have a few projectors to watch on board. No personal LCD screens with 'chose you own channel' or on-screen in-flight gaming (between other passengers etc) like Qantas, who's fleet is far more modern inside.
I am surprise channel 9 is even allowed in this post 9/11 world (even with captian's ability to disable at will). Does anyone know is it available on international (IE ORD to LHR)? I would love to have a live feed during the crossing of the Atlantic.
Maybe luck for you...but they may have needed more weight up front for balance....remember...when airlines have a choice..balancing more profitable freight is the real angle. passengers are just icing on the cake..if a 747 is loaded down below.
I always listen to it because I like to know what's going on in the cockpit. Last time I flew LAX-IAD they had us decend to a lower altitude because there was so much turbulence.
is it up to the pilot to let you listen to ATC convo, or is it just on select flights? because last time i was on a 747 United flight it was out of Hong Kong to San Francisco, although the screen said i can listen to ATC convo on channel 9 there was no convo
This is a real nice video! don't worry, I couldn't tell the departure was bumpy. It looked to me like the camera was still. I liked the conversation between the captain and ATC too. That plane sure was heavy indeed since it took the entire length of the runway to get off the ground. Nice view from the window all the way. superb job once again!
Love these videos with channel 9- and especially the heavy takeoff! Thanks! Those 747 wings sure are flexible out toward the end (makes for a smoother ride than an Airbus).
For the record, the six people who gave this video a thumbs down are idiots!
@michaelkoswara United could cockpit / ATC communication on audio: Channel-9 or l-13 depend on plane, if pilot does. Thus not all flight.
If lucky Iu have odd is 50-50. Some pilot dislikes to be listen.
But ATC on/off give me the scale to judge pilot's skill level. If confidence, no worry to be listen by anyone.
Because of this system, Japan Air or ANA have not, UA is my first choice, & now my lfe time flight mile is 3.3 mil with UA. 1/3 to G Clooney's Up In The Air movie, though.
That wing flexing up and down on the outside is not a calming site lol. I know the plane is heavy and full of fuel, but I far prefer the view BEHIND the wing. Flew FC and BC a few times, but I don't like the forward section of the airplane.
Man, that was a 51 second roll once spooled up...not counting the little movement in speed before full spooling. Talk about the fuel tanks and cargo bay being full.
@crapper1 There is still some hope just due to the fact that the name of the airline that they are going to keep is United Airlines, not Continental; however i'm not sure because of different aircraft like all of the 737-700's, -800's, and -900's and the 767-400 and the 757-300 that just those aircraft will not have channel 9, i'm not sure but i bet if you ask a United Airlines Pilot, he can tell you.
Isn't this a homeland security issue? This channel 9? There is no way the pilots should turn this on for people to hear, and videotaping the flight is also a security issue because it shows the flight path the aircraft took and it could be used to aid in terrorism even though you were just having fun...gotta think first man! We live in different times now!
Long takeoff roll -- very cool. Most flight using 32L depart from Tango 10, but i guess when you are going all the way to NRT you need the fuel. Great video.
@wjelliott598 yes but they have to be United flights not united express. Pilots also have the right to turn channel 9 on or off. Most of the time it is on but Ive been on couple of flights where there was no channel 9 which is a huge bummer.
Just flew last week from Orlando to Dulles, and instead of hearing ATC on Channel 9, I got to listen to Jazz music!!! LOL. Looks like they had it turned off and played Jazz instead.
@rodgerjohnson I recently flew the Washington DC to Tokyo route earlier this month. I was not able to sleep on the flight so I listened to the pilots talk for almost twelve hours straight. It seemed like they were constantly talking. There were other airliners I was able to hear asking us (UA 803) if a particular course was recommended. I noticed that during that flight..we changed altitude multiple times to avoid "weather". When we got clearance to go higher, the engines roared louder.
@laforet98 pilot to pilot interaction is very common. The climbing higher has more to do than weather. It can be because of weather but during long flights you do step climbs to gain fuel efficiency since your plane is more fuel efficient when your higher up. You might ask yourself why they dont start up high, well they are too heavy and during the flight the fuel burns off and the plane gets lighter. which makes it more economical to go higher.
@laforet98 How do you listen to the pilots talk without having a cockpit clearance? Just curious if that's a special feature on the United flights, if so that would be awesome and I'm definitely interested ;)
@rodgerjohnson The Pilots have the option of turning channel 9 off. I recently flew first class on a Untied flight from Orlando to Wash. Dulles and it was truned off I went up to talk to the pilots and mentioned that it was off and the first officer fliped a switch above his head and turned it on so, the pilot even told me that i was one of 2 people that have ever shown intrest, so it was a real plus during the flight.
@lengendmk Channel 9 is the ninth channel that broadcasts whatever COM1 radio frequency the pilots are talking with control on. It is currently installed on all Premerger United (PMUA) mainline aircraft (A319 and larger). The captain can turn channel 9 off or on at his or her discretion. It is not known if it will be extended to all PMCO aircraft, as the equipment for Ch9 is heavy and expensive, but the management acknowledge that a lot of pax love the service.
Usually, long haul flights are loaded with freight which adds a lot of weight.Even without passengers, the fuel and freight alone would have weighed down the plane and caused it to eat a lot of concrete on the way up.
So what do you think the takeoff speed was? 150 kts? I've seen some pretty impressive short take off from a plane that size here on Youtube. Of of them being at ST Martin.
I remember the first time I saw a 747-400 up close. I was waiting at O'Hare for a connecting flight to Tulsa, OK. I walked over to another gate to see what was there. It was a 744 in the gray-and-blue UAL livery. One h*ll of a huge jetliner seeing it up close. I wonder how people react when they see the newer and BIGGER A380. 744's are cool!
Hey.. I have a question.. I love to fly with thise aircraft who tooks a long time to take off because speeding up to the runway really feels good like in this video.
my question is everytime i rode an airplane, tha take-off time is just i think 45 seconds.
@ryuharu03 How long were the flights... If your light on fuel and only going for an hour or 2, regardless if its a 747 or not.... Your gonna have a quick takeoff.

(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) Why do we like to seat on the upper deck of a Boeing 747 instead of the low we deck?
(3) How do we feel differently to seat on the upper deck comparing with to seat on the lower deck?
(4) If you are the interior designer, how will you design the upper deck of a Boeing 747 in order to make it more enjoyable with more fun?

I like this video :) I wanna be a ATC when i grow up
wowdude999 1 year ago
damn, those planes have to use like 2 miles of runway just to take off
ThreadyCashdrummer01 1 year ago
you can really tell that the wings are full of fuel from how much they're flexed down before you started rolling.

wow heavy and slow climb!
No wonder we see many UA 744s in the desert cuz heavy flights like this eats through airframe cycles pretty fast=)

I'll take United any day just because they have channel 9 ATC
airlinepilotdude 2 years ago 64
@airlinepilotdude
Is channel 9 included on all United flights?
wjelliott598 1 year ago
@wjelliott598 yes but they have to be United flights not united express. Pilots also have the right to turn channel 9 on or off. Most of the time it is on but Ive been on couple of flights where there was no channel 9 which is a huge bummer.

@rodgerjohnson
Just flew last week from Orlando to Dulles, and instead of hearing ATC on Channel 9, I got to listen to Jazz music!!! LOL. Looks like they had it turned off and played Jazz instead.

@rodgerjohnson whats channel 9?
xXxSexyEmoBoyxXx 1 year ago
@rodgerjohnson I recently flew the Washington DC to Tokyo route earlier this month. I was not able to sleep on the flight so I listened to the pilots talk for almost twelve hours straight. It seemed like they were constantly talking. There were other airliners I was able to hear asking us (UA 803) if a particular course was recommended. I noticed that during that flight..we changed altitude multiple times to avoid "weather". When we got clearance to go higher, the engines roared louder.
laforet98 1 year ago
@laforet98 pilot to pilot interaction is very common. The climbing higher has more to do than weather. It can be because of weather but during long flights you do step climbs to gain fuel efficiency since your plane is more fuel efficient when your higher up. You might ask yourself why they dont start up high, well they are too heavy and during the flight the fuel burns off and the plane gets lighter. which makes it more economical to go higher.
rodgerjohnson 1 year ago
@laforet98 How do you listen to the pilots talk without having a cockpit clearance? Just curious if that's a special feature on the United flights, if so that would be awesome and I'm definitely interested ;)
Samurai1568 1 year ago
@Samurai1568 You just tune in from your seat on Channel 9.
laforet98 1 year ago
@rodgerjohnson The Pilots have the option of turning channel 9 off. I recently flew first class on a Untied flight from Orlando to Wash. Dulles and it was truned off I went up to talk to the pilots and mentioned that it was off and the first officer fliped a switch above his head and turned it on so, the pilot even told me that i was one of 2 people that have ever shown intrest, so it was a real plus during the flight.
ladysman737 1 year ago
@rodgerjohnson just ask the flight crew aka flight attendents to ask pilots
to trun on

@airlinepilotdude whats channel 9 ATC?
lengendmk 9 months ago
@lengendmk Channel 9 is the ninth channel that broadcasts whatever COM1 radio frequency the pilots are talking with control on. It is currently installed on all Premerger United (PMUA) mainline aircraft (A319 and larger). The captain can turn channel 9 off or on at his or her discretion. It is not known if it will be extended to all PMCO aircraft, as the equipment for Ch9 is heavy and expensive, but the management acknowledge that a lot of pax love the service.
Trainzcool 9 months ago
damn, this thing really eats up runway when its full fuel and pax.
Zdogs22 2 years ago 37
@Zdogs22
Usually, long haul flights are loaded with freight which adds a lot of weight.Even without passengers, the fuel and freight alone would have weighed down the plane and caused it to eat a lot of concrete on the way up.

is the flight with the fuel leak because i saw a video the same flight plan and the same airlines

@FmAm25GuitaRskateR How do we know it's the flight that had that fuel leak? (all 747 look the same from inside.....):

So what do you think the takeoff speed was? 150 kts? I've seen some pretty impressive short take off from a plane that size here on Youtube. Of of them being at ST Martin.
Skippy585 2 years ago
@Skippy585 Around 170-180. I went in the cockpit and saw on the FMC. Cant remember the exact number but the VR was in the range of 170-180.
rodgerjohnson 2 years ago
@rodgerjohnson Rotae is around 175 kts and V2 is 200 kts (safety speed)

I remember the first time I saw a 747-400 up close. I was waiting at O'Hare for a connecting flight to Tulsa, OK. I walked over to another gate to see what was there. It was a 744 in the gray-and-blue UAL livery. One h*ll of a huge jetliner seeing it up close. I wonder how people react when they see the newer and BIGGER A380. 744's are cool!
747400fan 2 years ago
So you unless you mean 170 or 180 MPH, that would be around 205 MPH if you talking NMPH.
Skippy585 2 years ago
@747400fan yep, just as you said, space ghosts that fly me and Al Gore love the 744s!!
I could care less if you mean a 747-400 and call it a 744.
Al Gore would not understand that, he flies private jets for the only and VERY reason of facts and confusion you keep throwing out.
If "Climate Change" is so bad, then why does Al Gore fly in private jets???
Liberalism IS a mental disorder.

Hey.. I have a question.. I love to fly with thise aircraft who tooks a long time to take off because speeding up to the runway really feels good like in this video.
my question is everytime i rode an airplane, tha take-off time is just i think 45 seconds.
and thats also a Boeing 747-400. Japan Airlines.
Specifically in Manila Airport and Tokyo
ryuharu03 2 years ago
@ryuharu03 How long were the flights... If your light on fuel and only going for an hour or 2, regardless if its a 747 or not.... Your gonna have a quick takeoff.
rodgerjohnson 2 years ago
@ryuharu03 And your question is???
LandRoverWay23 11 months ago
how did you record the conversation with ATC? Did you press the earpiece hard against the mic of your camera or something?
