I think the top 5 versions of this song is by Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Terrence Trent D'arby, Seal and Al Green (live version). Each captures that soul. When listening to Cooke's and D'arby's versions, you sense they are singing about a movement. Redding sounds like his is a deep, hurtful personal experience. Green just takes it to church and you look around for the collection plate. Seal's version is like a movement from within. Honorable mention is Wayne Brady. Listen & you'll see why.

This is great. Too many people have covered this song and the only thing I could say is "don't mess with perfection". Nobody has been able to improve on Sam Cooke's original, IMHO. But this is definitely one of the best ones. By far the best was Ray Charles singing this at Sam Cooke's funeral, which I heard on a radio documentary about Sam Cooke some years ago. Has any one else heard that?? Ray Charles is the only person who can make covers that are different, but as good as the originals!!
