They had factory rev limiter to I do believe. I think Ford shut them down around 6800. Anyone know Robby from the Detroit area you know they will run. He has a 383 Boss Cleveland that will spin about 9200rpm. It used to be in a 1970 Cougar, with a 4.88 gear, a C4 trans, that ran low 10.'s @ 3400lbs. I dont know what he is doing these days.. But his motor was still one of the best spinning and sounding motors I have ever heard.
The Boss 351 had solid lifter cam, 780 Holey carb, closed chamber heads, 4 bolt block, steel crank, forged pistons, big valve heads. I think they were 1.88 ex. and 2.19 intakes. Same dims as the early Boss 302's.
@P0IS0N It depends on what you mean by "better." Keep in mind that the Mach1 option was pretty much a cosmetic option, with engines ranging from a 351W, all the way to the 428 CobraJet.
Closed chamber 4 barrel Cleveland heads. Best fu#king heads ever. Too bad they needed 100 octane regular gas back in the day which was getting REALLY hard to find in 1971 or 1972.
Really what happened to the car industry was that they received emission standards from the feds in 1969 that by 1974 their cars would have to meet. Dopey bumpers by 1973.Oil problems began in 1973 but was not a problem until the Carter years. I paid .42 cents a gallon in1975 here in California.
@jamielynjoystewart Didn't it start wth the Insurance companies forcing people to pay huge money for their cars, which discouraged people from buying Muscle Cars?
@MultiAREE Car manufactures were constantly manipulating horse power ratings for a verity of reasons. Boss 302 @ 290hp why? Because the 302 Z28 claimed 290hp. but the simple fact is since the dawn of the muscle car era ding-a-lings with low skills and too much money were wrapping themselves around America's collective telephone poles and insurance companies didn't like it. So 1971 Boss 351 rated @ 335 should've been 390 or 410. In 72 everything changed from gross to SAE net. no more fudging.
@jamielynjoystewart I agree with all, except the end. SAE net didn't stop fudging. Also, one trick manufacturers have used is to use an artificially low rpm for max hp. They might rate the engine as 300 hp @ 5000, which might have been true...but the engine would rev to 6000 where it might make 400 hp. This was often to avoid high insurance rates which were often based on lbs/hp ratio.
@3333glen That's what buick did for the 70 455GS. Because GM had the 10 lb per horse power rule Buick rated the GSX stage1 at 360hp @4600rpm (true) but Redline was 5200 rpm Maybe 400-410hp. SAE Net was suppose to fix that. Remember the rating was at the rear wheels. That's why different cars with the same engine would have different ratings. Into the 2000s and testers had trailer dynos that measured at the rear wheel. We found, in fact, corporations were fudging
This is my favorite color of the '71 BOSS 351 I also loved this one in a color named the SILVER BLUE which was a lighter than blue sky! Anyways it's one of my favorites Mustangs!
@DONDIVA1969 That's actually not true the 351 cleveland only made 330hp at the crank probably more like 350hp, but the 1971 camaro z28 with the Lt1 350 made 370hp factory. It came with 11 to 1 compression and a high rise intake, it also came with a holley 780cfm carb and cowl induction. They were both close and the cleveland is not a small block it is a mid block meaning it is just slightly bigger than a small block, but not a big block. The 315 windsor was a small block.
@Chevymonster203 Last year Hot Rod Magazine dyno tested stock rebuilds of Chevy and Ford performance small blocks. The Boss 351 and the Chevy LT-1 350/370 hp small blocks were among those tested. The Boss 351 made more horsepower than the 350 LT-1. Its in black and white and I’m sure you can find the article on the Internet or in a hardcopy back issue.
Factory ratings meant little back then; some engines were underrated and some were inflated. Chevy usually exaggerated them.
ok look boss351dude, i don't understand why you're pissed. sincerelly i just wanted to give you my point of view because my family own the three model year 71 to 73. you seem to be mad just because people doesn't have your knowledge. by the way i'm not good at skateboarding, i prefer to drive my 1972 Mach1 VIN: 2F05H103209 351 cleveland with no ram air.
for the ram air thing... obviously you think that i am a moron who can't make a difference between the NASA hood traps and a ram air system. my uncle's 429 CJ-R have the rubber seal around the air cleaner and a little X paint mark on it. and he do have the vacum system under the hood.
my moms friend has a MACH '71 351! its currently being restored. but from what i've heard its blue and all too. too bad you've got to be 25 to drive a car with historic plates in NJ.
hey man im 15 and im saving up to get mabey if im lucky to find one with minimal rust for under 8k. but just the shell. i want to build it from the groud up!
Im 15 too. I found mine for 4 grand with only a little rust in the rear quarterpanel. now all i gotta do is convince the parents to lend me 2 grand. then im set!
I have to agree with some of the other commenters here about the engine mods. Have not ridden in one, so maybe the owner really did improve performance. However, I don't get the line that he reduced compression so you can run it on unleaded gas. Did he mean low octane gas? 2 different things. There are both octane boosters and lubricants for higher compression cars...I have a high compression Corvette and a Super Bee and I have driven them for 12 years. I would never think of lowering comp.
Pretty much Fords coupes from that early 70's era had terrible blindspots. I guess that's why they started putting opera windows on the Thunderbird in '73.
The scooped hood with or without ram air was available on all "Sportsroofs" as they were called when equipped with a V8. Also could be ordered for coupes and drop tops. When the functional RAM AIR was ordered, hood locking pins were mandatory. This is how to tell a real RAM AIR car. In 72-73, only the 351 2V got the RAM AIR.
my uncle have a '71 c-code 429 cj ram air with no locking pins and me i have a '72 h code 351C 2v with no ram air. i don't know where you got this information. my cousin also have a '73 cobra jet 4v but no ram air.
Look under the hood! Is there a rubber seal around the air cleaner? Does it have a plenum with flapper doors in the scoops? Having hood scoops means nothing. Is there vacuum lines? Try reading Mustang recognition guide page 188 and 216. Stick to your scateboards.
These were one of the best mustangs ever built. They were the largest, but the fastest of the bunch in the quarter mile. Boss 351C was rated stock at 330HP and probably puts out closer to 375HP (NHRA rating).
I have a 71 Mach I 351C, which looks very similar to this one. It is built up and puts out a good 400HP. Love these cars.
i own a 73 mach 1 with the 351 CJ motor. is it still for sale? the bottom end and a few other things need some replacing, but i'm interested in what your asking price is
I had the same color 71 boss 351 back in the mid 80's.I could short shift it,and the car would pull effortlessly through all four gears up to 50 or so. If you wanted to really make tracks, revving it to 6800 was no problem either.Rear sway bar w/staggered shocks, and a 391 Traction-loc rear end.the 71-73 cars were bigger and heavier but were the best hanlding Mustangs of that era 850 double pumper, solid lifters, aluminum med-rise manifold BOSS heads with 11.3-1 compression ratio .
@jonezet hey Jonezet, Ford has released a new BOSS 351 Block that has the bolts of the Cleveland with the cooling system and strength of the Windsor.
"Based on the architecture of the popular Windsor 351 but blessed with the more robust 2.75-inch main bearings of the old Cleveland block, Ford designed the new Boss 351 block with strength in mind through 4-bolt main caps, screw-in freeze plugs, splayed main bolts, siamese bores with engineered coolant cross-drilling" from the website autoblog
@jonezet i LOVE these cars. you can find them decently priced and the collectability is becoming more and more popular as the years go by..Im sure you could really open this thing up despite it being detuned..im more into resto-modding myself
Wow. Thanks for that. I'd love a nice '71 Mach 1, but in Australia, they're so rare and sooo expensive, I'll buy a couple of houses before I could get one of them.
There's a guy who lives down the street from me who has the exact same car! I saw him driving it once. I'm sure it runs on high octane gas so driving it everyday is not an option unless your someone like Jay Leno. Still a great car though. My mom had a 70 Torino with 351 Cleveland. It was yellow with white leather interior. I wish she could've kept it!
Hi!, anyone know if there it was a 1972 fast back?, I found an 72 Fast back ,3gears plus R manual transmission in caracas ,then I will buy it, it has a "302"engine , but I do suspect is not!...and i dont know how to recognize the engine model, any advice mustang lovers? thanks.
Beautiful car, yes this same body style was made from 71-73. 351C has the upper radiator hose going directly into the block. 302 goes into the intake manifold. Also look at the 5th digit in the vin#. H=351-2V, M=351-4V, Q=351CJ, R=Boss351. There is supposedly a 72 R-code that is VERY rare but they didn't call it a boss. Any fastback Mustang is worth restoring unless it is a complete basketcase IMO
aintpat, Thanks , the 5 digit in my VIN code is M (I am so happy for it!) I had been searching more info , in Venezuela all Mustang VIN start with a letter (A) so is very rare , my is :AJ02MU2XXXX, THE RARE THING IS THAN THE M here it supose to be a mach 1 for some people but others says is a fastback, also the "U" is very rare taht i believe is Unknow engine, I will check today the manifold stuff , i find a picture in google so i will tell you!, but the 3 gears speed is very rare!thanks.
HVGO, one way to tell a fastback from a Mach-1 is by what type of hood the car has, if the hood is original. The Mach-1 came with the hood vents (as seen in this video), and the fastback came with the standard hood.
I have a 1972 Fastback that came with a 351-2V Cleveland and FMX Automatic trans. Good luck with your Mustang!
tHANKS >bRYAN , yes the hood is the easy way , but here is not impossible than people sell the hood , and just change to the normal one...anyway I find out that the engine is an "hecho en Mexico" one, so is a rare Fastback for now...as soon I can , I will show it in the tube, so everybody can SEE IT and help me out...thanks .HVGO
the 02 in your VIN means it is a fastback not a Mach1 like mine wich has an 05. The M code as aintpat said is a 351 4V wich has the enormous heads like my 351CJ wich is a Q code by the way. check out my vids for more info. What you found is worth restoreing if you have it in ya.
My dad was the 1st black man to own one of these back in Zimbabwe and he always told me that seating in the drivers seat was like seating in a bath tub with your legs raised up resting on the taps. lol.
I had a 73 mach 1 w 351 cleveland, headers holley 650 carb, yellow w black hockey stick stripe. Back in 99 on the strip at myrtle beach the altenator died on me, luckily my motel was only fifty feet away, went to autozone purchased rebuilt altenator for $18.99. The good ol'e days.
This car has ladders on the back leaf springs. He should remove those. Also the only thing that prevents a 351 c from running pump gas 93 octane is the valve seats and valves. Get harded valve seats and stainless steel valves leave the compression at 10 to 1 and this guy would have been good to go. He also ruined the heads who ever filled those close chamber 4 barrel heads deserves to be kicked in the balls. I do own a R code 1971 so I should know. If you own a car this rare leave it stock.
I would throw a stroker under it, it would still look stock but it give those heads the cubic inches it needs to really scream. For the mild work he ended up doing, it runs 12.60's and thats impressive for such a big car compared to the original Mustang. I believe there enough stock examples in museums and collecting dust (as they are never driven) around the US for people not to forget these cars.
The motor he ruined was one of 1806. I agree with you he should have called up Ford Racing and had a new stroker sent out. The last time I saw a boss 351 motor with matching head in auction it went for 15 grand. I have never seen another boss 351 in person in my life. I have seen a lot of clones. There are probably only arround 500 of these cars left.
donohueean, he should remove the traction bars only if he wants to enter the car in shows, but not if it's a daily driver. I have a '72 Mustang Fastback, and with a lot of power and their lightweight rear ends, you get major wheel-hop off the line when you stomp on the gas.
Also, the Boss 351's have 11:1 compression. It would be 10:1 with flat-top pistions, but the Boss 351's have domed pistons. I've calculated Cleveland compression ratios mathematically, so I know it's true.
donohueean, "filling" the cylinder heads probably means he made the ports smaller, to increase low end power. I agree though, he should have left the heads alone.
The best Cleveland heads for the street are the Australian Cleveland 2-B heads. They have the small quench combustion chambers of the 4-B heads, but the smaller ports of the 2-B heads.
Shoulda Left the Paint Original and why paint the hood gloss??

I understand the 351s were some fantastic factory small blocks.
The Windsor 302 that Shelby adopted for '68 was pretty cool--it just need a better carb and an aluminum intake. More aluminum is never a bad thing :D
From what I understand, stroking the the 302 Windsor to 331 or 347 cubic inches could dramatically increase power as well.
I'd like to take the Cobra Jet 351 and stroke it 427--big block displacement in a small block engine = 530 hp and a lighter car.

I'd love a nice '71 Mach 1, but in Australia, they're so rare and sooo expensive, I'll buy a couple of houses before I could get one of them.

i got the same car just in black and white sitting in the shop under a cover XD w/ a mach 1 next to it

That is pretty subjective. I think it's the prettiest Mustang of the lot. And the 351 Cleveland is a fantastic motor, as well.

Hi!, anyone know if there it was a 1972 fast back?, I found an 72 Fast back ,3gears plus R manual transmission in caracas ,then I will buy it, it has a "302"engine , but I do suspect is not!...and i dont know how to recognize the engine model, any advice mustang lovers? thanks.
HVGO 4 years ago
Beautiful car, yes this same body style was made from 71-73. 351C has the upper radiator hose going directly into the block. 302 goes into the intake manifold. Also look at the 5th digit in the vin#. H=351-2V, M=351-4V, Q=351CJ, R=Boss351. There is supposedly a 72 R-code that is VERY rare but they didn't call it a boss. Any fastback Mustang is worth restoring unless it is a complete basketcase IMO
aintpat 3 years ago
aintpat, Thanks , the 5 digit in my VIN code is M (I am so happy for it!) I had been searching more info , in Venezuela all Mustang VIN start with a letter (A) so is very rare , my is :AJ02MU2XXXX, THE RARE THING IS THAN THE M here it supose to be a mach 1 for some people but others says is a fastback, also the "U" is very rare taht i believe is Unknow engine, I will check today the manifold stuff , i find a picture in google so i will tell you!, but the 3 gears speed is very rare!thanks.
HVGO 3 years ago
HVGO, one way to tell a fastback from a Mach-1 is by what type of hood the car has, if the hood is original. The Mach-1 came with the hood vents (as seen in this video), and the fastback came with the standard hood.
I have a 1972 Fastback that came with a 351-2V Cleveland and FMX Automatic trans. Good luck with your Mustang!
BRYAN351 3 years ago
tHANKS >bRYAN , yes the hood is the easy way , but here is not impossible than people sell the hood , and just change to the normal one...anyway I find out that the engine is an "hecho en Mexico" one, so is a rare Fastback for now...as soon I can , I will show it in the tube, so everybody can SEE IT and help me out...thanks .HVGO
HVGO 3 years ago
the 02 in your VIN means it is a fastback not a Mach1 like mine wich has an 05. The M code as aintpat said is a 351 4V wich has the enormous heads like my 351CJ wich is a Q code by the way. check out my vids for more info. What you found is worth restoreing if you have it in ya.

We had one of these, we didn't know till we ran the VIN, cause some asshole made it into a Mach 1 clone!

If you own a car this rare leave it stock.
donohueean 4 years ago
I would throw a stroker under it, it would still look stock but it give those heads the cubic inches it needs to really scream. For the mild work he ended up doing, it runs 12.60's and thats impressive for such a big car compared to the original Mustang. I believe there enough stock examples in museums and collecting dust (as they are never driven) around the US for people not to forget these cars.
dj4monie 4 years ago
The motor he ruined was one of 1806. I agree with you he should have called up Ford Racing and had a new stroker sent out. The last time I saw a boss 351 motor with matching head in auction it went for 15 grand. I have never seen another boss 351 in person in my life. I have seen a lot of clones. There are probably only arround 500 of these cars left.
donohueean 4 years ago
I removed my orginal motor and put in a built 351 I am pushing 515 horse power at the wheels and it runs a 10.5 on street tires and a 10.2 on slicks.
donohueean 4 years ago
for 15 grand? really? man my friend has one just lying around
rocker12347 4 years ago
donohueean, he should remove the traction bars only if he wants to enter the car in shows, but not if it's a daily driver.
BRYAN351 4 years ago
donohueean, "filling" the cylinder heads probably means he made the ports smaller, to increase low end power. I agree though, he should have left the heads alone.
The best Cleveland heads for the street are the Australian Cleveland 2-B heads. They have the small quench combustion chambers of the 4-B heads, but the smaller ports of the 2-B heads.
