The water has to have plenty of room to circulate through the clothes, and it can't do that if there's too much in the washer. If you have to wash them a second time to get what you missed, you're defeating the purpose.
Second of all, you can make your own eco-friendly laundry detergent for far less than any of the brands on the market. There are lots of recipes and instructions online.
