The real question is if the guy who uploaded the video was asking who's better at playing Black Star or just using it as a comparision for asking who's the better guitarist. In case it's the first, obviously Malmsteen cause he plays it like for a concert, nobody would go to a Malmsteen concert to see him playing it in a shitty/funny way. In case it's the second, well obviously Jason, he is a much more creative musician/composer, Yngwie stayed with his style in almost all his career.
another thing anyone noticed jasons amp yep hes playing through a little peavey practise amp and still sounds as good as yngwie who has 5 marshall stacks and pedal boards so in my opinion becker was light years more advanced than yngwie
becker was a young teenager here where as yngwie was in his early twenties when he played the song and jason surpassed yngwie by the mid 80,s just a fucking shame what happened to jason he would of gone on to much greater things like his friend marty friedman did
Malmsteen is a great inspiration, and composer and everything, i think he's done a lot, and i respect him, but Becker wrote an album note by note, each instrument, just with his eyes, nothing can beat that, sorry.

@milatherosa i think malmsteen best years are when he was in alcatrazz so when he was about 20 years old so you could compare them.But neither are better.Becker does to much legato.If we just compared the clear shred with no legato i think Yngwie would win.But all in all Becker has more versatility and he is not worse than Malmsteen yet he is not better...I like the alcatrazz Yngwie more but thats just my oppinion...But from a neutral point they are Both virtuosos with a diferent style thats all

I can't agree with the previous comments. The song here,Black Star,is not the hardest song to play. I'm 17 and I can pretty much play the same, that Becker played and I'm not the best guitar player. I'm not bragging about my skills,but I just wanna say that Jason Becker isn't really doing something far beyond most guitar players. And Yngwie was 16 when he wrote the song. He is far more creative and has flawless technique. His bends and improvisation are out of this world! So Yngwie ALL THE WAY!!
@PetersRockinTheWorld I agree. Malmsteen has more control, better vibrato. Jason was great don't get me wrong, he was probably even better than malmsteen at sweeps and stuff, he may have had an overall edge in speed as well. But malmsteen is at least as good of a songwriter/composer, and he just has that vibrato and that melodic sound that i've never heard anyone replicate perfectly. I definitely prefer malmsteen especially in this song.
first of all its quite too probable tht jason learned it by ear.. thts why some parts sound different.. and anyways i bet when yngwie was 18 he couldnt play any jason becker themes as good as himself... both are great players.. although personally i like more jason becker music and it sucks he got ALS..

I like the two even if I think that guitar and gymnastic are two differents disciplines I don't see the interest to be able to play under his leg, musically speaking Malmsteen has a more fluid way to play an he has more tonality change that make his way to play more rich, the Jason Becker way of playing even if it is of hight level is more flat but also interesting. Becker is a true innovator, Yngwie is a by the books, talented guitarist. There is no comparison. I love them both but whoever doesn't respect Jason Becker for his talent is clearly NOT a guitarist. Open your ears and listen to how repetitive Yngwie is.

This is a no-brainer really. In one corner is the original, playing to an 18000 capacity crowd during a series of 19 concerts in Moscow and Leningrad. In the other corner you have the imitator playing for his high school talent show. (although imo this isn't Yngwie's best version of Black Star. There's a video on youtube from his recent concert in St. Petersburg of Black Star...it's awesome!)

Keep in mind that Malmsteen has all professional equipment in his video while it appears that Becker is playing through a practice amp and just messing around the entire time. While still being just as good and much more entertaining.

i wud still go for Malmsteen...they r both great but..the impact on recording and live itself, Malmsteen seems effortless when playing...and his technique is more appropriate to classical music...Becker is more of a progressive rock with a classical flavor but jst a flavor...Malmsteen's notes are very unique and is nearest to voilin sound which is very classical..They r both great, but without Malmsteen, they'll never b a Json Becker...

Becker is a true innovator, Yngwie is a by the books, talented guitarist. There is no comparison. I love them both but whoever doesn't respect Jason Becker for his talent is clearly NOT a guitarist. Open your ears and listen to how repetitive Yngwie is.

Yngwie wrote Black Star when he was only 14 in 1977 when he was in his Band called Power House. There use to be a Demo Version on the Tube but it's been removed. Yngwie is and will Always be The King

This is a no-brainer really. In one corner is the original, playing to an 18000 capacity crowd during a series of 19 concerts in Moscow and Leningrad. In the other corner you have the imitator playing for his high school talent show. (although imo this isn't Yngwie's best version of Black Star. There's a video on youtube from his recent concert in St. Petersburg of Black Star...it's awesome!)
