When you just leave Midgar, you're 40% of the way through disk 1, though, to me, I'm only about 15% done because disk 1 is where I reach level 99 every time (via the sixth leveling ground (though the first play used the fifth)). The sixth leveling ground is about 85% of the way through disk 1. You won't be breeding your own chocobos until halfway through disk 2.
Chocobos look amazingly detailed in FF12. I haven't seen FF13 because I don't have the rather expensive system for it so I can't compare to the current generation games.

And with some puzzling things that make it longer... A lot of games today are to short... i beat most games in a few hrs, but in order to get the best outta a game i try to span it over a few days or i just dont pick it back up untill a few days later.
RPGs normally take around 30 hours to complete, far longer than most other types of games. RPGs are more like an interactive movie, in a way. Other games still take a good chunk of a day to complete. My own game, Platform Masters, is likely to need 6 to 10 hours to complete (less if you're skilled at the genre and don't die often). That doesn't include all the treasure hunting, infinite upgrading of abilities, and advancing the story, among other things.
I have zero hours on FF13 - I don't have the system for it. If you want something extreme, take my case with Disgaea. Disgaea 1 has about 1270 hours on it and Disgaea 2, if quitting and reloading is included, has about 1150. That's 2400 hours on 2 Disgaea games in still under 2 years.

No. Getting a black chocobo requires chocobo breeding. This doesn't become possible until disk 2, halfway through disk 2 when you have access to the Highwind.

@asuka294 I think you need a great and very good chocobo, mate them with a carob nut when both are A rank. This will give you a green/blue chocobo. For a black chocobo you mate the green/blue ones with a carob nut when they are A rank. Once you have done this mate the black one with a wonderful (both at A rank) with a zeio nut to get a gold one.
Actually, any combination of good and great will do. 2 great chocobos are better though so go for that. S rank is even better than A. It is possible win A rank races with a regular A rank chocobo even without the stamina recharging trick.
FF 7 fanboys have such a narrow prspective. the turn base fights are boring and have no action in them. ff 7 looks like crap(even when it orginally realesed) cut scences are not the games graphics nor are the pre render background you cant even interact with that background cause its 2d. ff7s story and characters were compared to other games crap. so ff7 fanboys admit it, get, over it, that slap yourself 1 time for every ridiculous claim youve made about ff7 being 1 of the best games ever
Do you have the chocobo lure materia? If you sold the one from before, you'll find another one well-hidden in the grass near the fence. Walk around on the tracks with this materia equipped and feed the chocobo any greens you have in stock. Then, while the chocobo eats, defeat all of the other enemies without targeting the chocobo. From there, renting the stalls and repeated feeding and racing is all that remains for acquiring a gold chocobo through breeding.
Just on Disk 2 at the moment breeding chocobos for a golden one. I've got the process pretty down in my head now, and it's a simple one, it's just that it takes a long time, a lot of Chocobo races and quite a lot of reseting and loading up the game to try mating again lol. But it's worth it for Knights of The Round alone!
@Khm3rKidEric yes it´s luck, BUT theres a really easy way to solve this:
If you catch a chocobo it´s gender isn´t set yet.... So you can send it to the chocobofarm, fly there, and then save the game.
Now you go into the farm and check out your chocobo. if it´s a male: load the game and check out your chocobo again. the chance is 50/50^^ once it says your chocobo is female it stays that way.
@Khm3rKidEric its random but make a save before you breed if its not the right one restart game try again same for chocobo when moving them from the fence area to the stable
Quit and reload - it's a common technique to work around some randomization in video games. Simply save just before the randomization is to occur then go on normally until the randomization occurs. Not satisfied? Quit and reload and try again and repeat until you get exactly what you want. You have to save as close to the point the randomization occurs for best results. This trick is especially the case for RPGs (like my Disgaea and FF12 videos).
is there a master green materia? it doesnt make any sense to have all the other colors but green, or is it ultima? i have all these but theres gotta be a green one...
Only the magentas and blues don't have a "master" equivalent. Green is magic and there is a "master magic". Have you obtained every magic materia and got each to maximum level? If you have all magic masteria mastered, but can't perform the merge, it's a sign you don't have all possible magic materia and that you're missing one. Have you obtained "full cure", "shield", and "contain"? These 3 are usually overlooked or forgotten about.
just a correction: you can access the ancient forest with just mountain chocobo and you can enter it asap when you got the highwind and you got control on tifa
I don't know if someone has already mentioned this. but you made a mistake in the description. You can access the Ancient Forest by defeating Ultima Weapon, not Diamond Weapon. Just thought i should point that out.
but I don't wanna get a chocobooooo. It's a pain in the ass to get a normal one let alone a gold one. I hate that you get a free gold chocobo for beating Ruby, but all the strategies for beating ruby right now involve getting materia like quadra magic and mime, things you can only get via already having a Gold Chocobo. GRRRR
Easy: master it. To do that, simply get all the AP it needs to reach the highest level. Once it does, you'll get a brand new one with 0 total AP and you'll still keep your old one. By putting this new one on and doing the same, you'll get another. Do this with alls instead of summons, and you'll be getting gil like crazy.
You'll see where the time and gil comes from in my other videos. Notice how, in my sixth leveling grounds video (which is still disk 1 by the way), I sell all those mastered "all" materia? For every AP you get on an "all", you get 40 gil due to the 40:1 gil:AP ratio of selling mastered alls. 200 AP means 8000 gil. Multiply this by the number of alls present and again by growth and it adds very quickly. My "fastest gil" video shows the fastest method - 100 million in 2 hours.
You have to rent the stables. Renting is actually permanent. It's 10,000 gil per stall, but if you focused on mastering alls, you should easily have the gil for it.
I had a question for you. Ive been breeding chocobos, and i always, i mean ALWAYS get males. I use the save state outside of the chocobo farm and ive been reloading over and over for about 20 minutes and I cannot get a female. Is my game bugged, how the heck do you get a female chocobo???
I don't know. I just let chance take its role and I seem to get an even mix of male and female. Basically, I get a chocobo, race it to class A or S (A only if I'm unable to win races in class A).
did the same, I had to retry like, 10 or 15 times before getting a SINGLE female. it's not a bug, it's how the game works, you have to try your luck =/
You have a 1 in 1024 chance, statistically, of needing 10 tries to getting a particular gender. 15 tries means a 1 in 32,768 chance. I, oddly, don't have this problem.
Fundamentally, all you actually need is just the Highwind. Once you get it, you'll need to make use of the chocobo breeding to get a gold chocobo and from there, you're good to go.
I dont know why the guy below me is getting a negative response you can actually get it without the gold chocobo it just takes skill and luck with the highwind by carefully placing on a edge of the cliff
easy enough, kill emerald get Master sum, magic and com. the go kill him ( good way of killing emerald, mime, on omni slash, and have clouds wep do gravity dam. emerald week point :D )
About 1/3 of the way through disk 2, upon getting the Highwind, you can start breeding chocobos. When this happens, the chocobos never flee after they're caught. Once you get one in a battle and complete it, you can send it to the farm or let it loose. Once trained and fed, you can take it out and go wherever you want, without the chocobo leaving you.
are you on disc 3? and if you didn't know Emerald is in the ocean so you need the sub and ruby is in the sand dunes near the coral prison where you can only reach by airship or chocobo but I suggest that you stay the hell away from ruby
When that character has sadness status and is in the back row with protect, that 999 HP shouldn't be much of a problem. This is best for a wizard. Sadness cuts damage by 25%. Back row cuts damage by 50%. Protect cuts damage by an unrecalled amount, but probably either 25 or 50%. A hit that normally deals 2000 damage would do either 375 or 562 damage instead (depending on how effective protect is (I practically never use it because the game is too easy as it is.)).
Just use a tranquilizer to enable sadness status. You can do it in the menus. It cuts damage by 25% and makes it harder to use limits. For the most part, you won't encounter attacks that do more than about 1500 damage in the first place. Most do around 600 late in the game... offering any hints. Maxing vitality also helps a lot (easy to do - see the "how to max vitality" video for details).
What I usually do I just fight a few battles in the forest around Mideel. About 5 is often enough. If your chocobos aren't S-class yet, you should try to get that instead, unless you're desperate for gil.
Can't what? S class is possible, even with the basic yellow chocobo. I've done it. It's hard, but I've done it. If you can't get S class, then A should be okay.
You can start as soon as you have the Highwind. You'll need to rent stalls (for 10,000 gil, which is dirt cheap for me since I get that in less than a second with the forest around Mideel - the battle gives 250,000 gil (hint: master and sell the mastered "all" materia for unlimited, easy gil - I get 1000 gil for every AP gained with my materia setup)).

There are two ways to get a gold chocobo. The first and easiest is to breed them. The second, and most difficult, is to defeat Ruby Weapon and trade in the item. This gold chocobo is very slow and not race-worthy.
Apparently, you're not doing it right. Check with the Chocobo Sage for answers on how to do it. I often get it within 6 hours, most of which spent racing.
Is it hard to get a Gold Chocobo? Knights of the Round really is tempting, but after reading certain guides, it just seems way too complicated to obtain it.
It takes a few hours to get one, but it's quite easy. With the method of mastering and selling all materia, you can get the 3 to 6 million gil needed quite easily.
It takes about 20 seconds for a battle in the Mideel Forest and I get a quarter of a million gil from that. Using W item to get sylkis greens is far slower. In addition, I was also after setting my gil record of 1.3 billion at the time (now it's 1.4 billion, shown in the chocobo racing video).
You'll need the submarine for it. I don't recall the exact location, but it's hidden away in an alcove somewhere. Just follow the walls and you'll soon run into it.
The Northern Cave, if you're on disk 3, is the best place. If you want a lame approach or you're not there yet, see my sixth leveling grounds video. If you have the High Wind, then use the forest around Mideel instead as this is about 60% faster. Just make sure you have immunity to sleep though - crysales is troublesome. I don't know about your second question, though I doubt it.
You can also buy the MP plus and HP plus in Mideel before the "earthquake" swallows up Mideel. After the quake the materia shop owner doesn't sell it.
Initially, you don't get ultima. However, get the 5000 AP for it and you will be able to use it. How much MP you have makes no difference, as long as it's 130 or above (exception: MP turbo).
Ehm.. You can not get there by killing Diamond.. Diamond is the BIG White guy.. If you beat Ultimate wepaon u can get to Ancient forest without green/black/golden Chocobo:)
Are you asking how you get a piece of materia mastered? That's easy - get all of the AP needed so that the last level is reached. The reward? You get a brand new one, a great way to get everyone to morph-all or steal all. For things like "master command", just master every single piece of materia of that type, then, with the huge materia, perform a blend (I have a video of this).
What is the song called when you're in one of the materia caves? The track name on the OST would be great.

Are you using a Zeio nut? The carob nut does not work with making gold chocobos, except, maybe, when you're mating two gold chocobos.

I had a question for you. Ive been breeding chocobos, and i always, i mean ALWAYS get males. I use the save state outside of the chocobo farm and ive been reloading over and over for about 20 minutes and I cannot get a female. Is my game bugged, how the heck do you get a female chocobo???

I don't know. I just let chance take its role and I seem to get an even mix of male and female. Basically, I get a chocobo, race it to class A or S (A only if I'm unable to win races in class A).

did the same, I had to retry like, 10 or 15 times before getting a SINGLE female. it's not a bug, it's how the game works, you have to try your luck =/

You have a 1 in 1024 chance, statistically, of needing 10 tries to getting a particular gender. 15 tries means a 1 in 32,768 chance. I, oddly, don't have this problem.

Fundamentally, all you actually need is just the Highwind. Once you get it, you'll need to make use of the chocobo breeding to get a gold chocobo and from there, you're good to go.

I've got videos of both Emerald and Ruby. I defeat Emerald in just 4 minutes and miming Cid's "highwind" with "all lucky 7's" is the best method.

About 1/3 of the way through disk 2, upon getting the Highwind, you can start breeding chocobos. When this happens, the chocobos never flee after they're caught. Once you get one in a battle and complete it, you can send it to the farm or let it loose. Once trained and fed, you can take it out and go wherever you want, without the chocobo leaving you.

are you on disc 3? and if you didn't know Emerald is in the ocean so you need the sub and ruby is in the sand dunes near the coral prison where you can only reach by airship or chocobo but I suggest that you stay the hell away from ruby

For what do you need that HP/MP change-Materia? Isnt it useless when youre character gets only 999 HP?

When that character has sadness status and is in the back row with protect, that 999 HP shouldn't be much of a problem. This is best for a wizard. Sadness cuts damage by 25%. Back row cuts damage by 50%. Protect cuts damage by an unrecalled amount, but probably either 25 or 50%. A hit that normally deals 2000 damage would do either 375 or 562 damage instead (depending on how effective protect is (I practically never use it because the game is too easy as it is.)).

Hm, what is when you get sadness status? Do you get less hurt? And it hinders you to from doing quick spells!
And you wont survive even with protect and 2nd row when one hits you with over 9000! ^^

Just use a tranquilizer to enable sadness status. You can do it in the menus. It cuts damage by 25% and makes it harder to use limits. For the most part, you won't encounter attacks that do more than about 1500 damage in the first place. Most do around 600 late in the game... offering any hints. Maxing vitality also helps a lot (easy to do - see the "how to max vitality" video for details).

What I usually do I just fight a few battles in the forest around Mideel. About 5 is often enough. If your chocobos aren't S-class yet, you should try to get that instead, unless you're desperate for gil.

Can't what? S class is possible, even with the basic yellow chocobo. I've done it. It's hard, but I've done it. If you can't get S class, then A should be okay.

You can start as soon as you have the Highwind. You'll need to rent stalls (for 10,000 gil, which is dirt cheap for me since I get that in less than a second with the forest around Mideel - the battle gives 250,000 gil (hint: master and sell the mastered "all" materia for unlimited, easy gil - I get 1000 gil for every AP gained with my materia setup)).

There are two ways to get a gold chocobo. The first and easiest is to breed them. The second, and most difficult, is to defeat Ruby Weapon and trade in the item. This gold chocobo is very slow and not race-worthy.

Apparently, you're not doing it right. Check with the Chocobo Sage for answers on how to do it. I often get it within 6 hours, most of which spent racing.

Actually for the third one, you can also get there with a green chocobo. I did it a long time ago, but never with a river nor black chocobo.

It takes a few hours to get one, but it's quite easy. With the method of mastering and selling all materia, you can get the 3 to 6 million gil needed quite easily.

It takes about 20 seconds for a battle in the Mideel Forest and I get a quarter of a million gil from that. Using W item to get sylkis greens is far slower. In addition, I was also after setting my gil record of 1.3 billion at the time (now it's 1.4 billion, shown in the chocobo racing video).

I agree the W-item method is slower. I sold 2 or 3 of my mastered All materia and got around 4 million Gil to feed and breed to get a gold bird

You'll need the submarine for it. I don't recall the exact location, but it's hidden away in an alcove somewhere. Just follow the walls and you'll soon run into it.

The Northern Cave, if you're on disk 3, is the best place. If you want a lame approach or you're not there yet, see my sixth leveling grounds video. If you have the High Wind, then use the forest around Mideel instead as this is about 60% faster. Just make sure you have immunity to sleep though - crysales is troublesome. I don't know about your second question, though I doubt it.

You can also buy the MP plus and HP plus in Mideel before the "earthquake" swallows up Mideel. After the quake the materia shop owner doesn't sell it.

Initially, you don't get ultima. However, get the 5000 AP for it and you will be able to use it. How much MP you have makes no difference, as long as it's 130 or above (exception: MP turbo).

Ehm.. You can not get there by killing Diamond.. Diamond is the BIG White guy.. If you beat Ultimate wepaon u can get to Ancient forest without green/black/golden Chocobo:)

Are you asking how you get a piece of materia mastered? That's easy - get all of the AP needed so that the last level is reached. The reward? You get a brand new one, a great way to get everyone to morph-all or steal all. For things like "master command", just master every single piece of materia of that type, then, with the huge materia, perform a blend (I have a video of this).
