  • This is one song. Why are there 2 parts?

  • The guitarist is amazing

  • Steve Rothery and Diz Minnitt playing as The Granmarstonberries do an excellent version of Comfortably Numb (its on Youtube). Steve is such an incredible guitarist.

  • 2:09 Looks like Ozzy!

  • a masterpiece of poetry...

  • Supper's Nearly Ready

  • the wheel keeps going round and....much love to Marillion

  • This song sends a chill through me, every time I hear it.

  • What a fantastic song and video , it was a sad day when Fish left. I can remember that my mates an I made a pact in the summer of `87 that we would all go and see Marillion and the Smiths live in `88 if they toured - always regret that - as both Bands effectively ended in`87.

Thanks for posting the vid A+++++

  • When Fish went they turned to total shite

  • @stevexb12ss I totally agree, Steve. Marillion is one of those situations where they are shit without Fish & Fish is shit without them. Hogarth is the fucking worst!

  • your dad has got excellent taste :)

  • i know :)

I love Marillion and follow its trajectory for a long time, they are fantastic!!

  • Quite possibly one of the best tracks ever - the only thing it is improved by is a camp fire on a summers night and a few beers.

  • I was analyzing the music and lyrics of this song on my matura exam - and I got A! thank you, great Marillion. It was one of the best exams I had, I was talking about something i truly love. I wish I had more exams like this, especially on my university ;)

  • Saw them live in February 1981 and this was my favorite track from the start! Had one hell of a blow out party with them afterwards!!!!!

  • I didn't know any live version of this song, til now. But for me it's the best track ever created! I'm getting gossebumps when I'm hearing this.

  • @stevewilson20

I was there in 1982 and it was so great. I head the same shirt with jester and im miss it now and marillion too

  • @jinura try "recital of the script" dvd, isbn 24349 06259

  • This track got me into the whole neo-prog genre.. This song is in the leagues of Supper's Ready, 2112, Gates of Delirium and Thick as a Brick!

  • Saw them at Guildford Civic Hall - March 17th 1983 - just weeks before they finsihed up at Hammersmith - best gig ever been to - and it was only their 3rd night of the Script tour I recall. Nostalgia in buckets! Great vid - thanks

  • Fantastic!! - i´ve seen them two times in germany 1982!! Bonn and Dortmund; it was so amazing! - Fish couldn´t believe that there were so many fans in germany at their first gigs - i´ll NEVER forget!! - Now i´m 56 yeart old and i´ve all of their LP´s + EP´s (with FISH), in 1982 you couldn´t buy CDs!! - and my adult kids love them too.

But, Marillion without Fish isn´t Marillion (not only my oppinion!) - Fish RULEZ!!!!!

  • Fantastic epic music!!!

  • this song makes me want to smoke a thousand spliffs.

  • Me muero de emoción con este track me trae muchos recuerdos...es genial...

  • The more beautiful and epic song of Marillion...

  • Fish is the consummate theatrical showman. He is the IT factor in the early band. What I like best about him is his intensity.

  • @StewieFavre I think you´re right... Fish is very intense and profound in all his songs... he´s unique!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • мариллион назавжды

  • Fish at his very best. So animated and voice in such pristine excelence. Thank you very much for postings this music of epic importance to me.

  • i agree glendogg im just fucking about marrillion fans are so easy to wind up misplaced childhood is 1 of my fav albums ever, im off to piss some rush fans off

  • go this video or dvd consert to buy it so amasing

  • Grendel this is the song which was moved me very deeply when I heard this song the first time. Then I had the beautiful dog who of course was called Grendel. Marillion with Fish played a lot of moving song but this song still for me is in the top of their best ever played songs amongst Script Of A Jester's Tears, Forgotten Sons, Jigsaw.

Best regards for all Marillion's fans!

  • Schön wie der Gitarrist sein spielen genießt!Kannte ich nur von Jimmy Hendrix!Herrrrlich!Und Fish is einfach nur voll Genial und einzigartig!

  • Lagu jaman keur SMA ... Lumayan lah jang saukur nostalgia bae ...

  • @kevmoron stfu you market square queero

  • @TheMusicnut1970 You and KeyMorris41 need to grow up! Yes, this song is clearly derivative of early Genesis. So what? This was recorded very early in Marillion's career, and they went on to forge their own creative and interesting path. Good music inspired by good music is still worth listening to.

  • fish really does wish he was peter gabriel early genesis blows these pretenders away

  • @TheMusicnut1970 Piss off moron your suppers ready and the midnight sun bids you farewell.

  • This is my favourite song ever 17 minutes and 40 seconds of lyrical genius, the comparisons to suppers ready will always be made but so what, a song about a mythical creature written from the creatures point of view or a non sense song about 2 lovers...Grendel every time with thelive version sounding as good as in the studio.

  • alfred walker seeks his meals

  • REALLY

THIS SONG IS VERY SIMILAR TO SUPPERS READY

    BUT I LOVE IT ANYWAY

  • @ronifranco27 Supper's Ready is perfection! Grendel is very much like it which means it's perfection, too! ;o)

  • 2 words suppers ready

  • the one and only x

  • simple perfection 5*

  • Montreal, mid '80s a rock bar called The Edgewater,Fish was in town.

What a show, blew me and friends away..We were all fans of Genesis,Rush and Floyd.

Prob. why Marillion worked for us.

    Ahhh the days of yesteryear...

    Timeless, still resonates today.

  • One of my all time favorite songs !

  • Awesome!

  • donde este Leonardo Dantes que se quiten estas chorraditas de rock con pretensiones

  • This band took me through my horible years growing up in Bulgaria.Thank God now I live in the Greatest country ever USA

  • BEST SONG EVER

  • Saw em on their first official tour in 82' (Market Square Heroes)

I had the 12" of Grendel as well as picture discs etc.

Gave em all away to a fan.

Takes me back to my spotty teenage years listening to this. lol

The Bass player's like a Duracell Bunny.

  • I'm trying to find John Gardner's Grendel book because of this song... I became obsessed with the figure of the poor misunderstood Grendel chap. This is one of the BEST songs in HISTORY. Fish's theatrics and powerful voice make it a greater experience.

  • Awesome - Marillion died when Fish left

  • Danke dir.... Derek William Dick....

  • Best song ever and I was there.....Brilliant

  • @kwackers21 you lucky sonofabitch!

  • @bananamonkeyking5 Cheers.... but it makes me very old.... but was a brilliant gig!

  • @kwackers21 hey id rather be old, but have been alive when all the good music was in concert! but i was stuck being born in 96'... owell least there are still some good bands making music now. another upside is i dont have to wait for the new albums to come out!

  • @worldcitizenforever Excellent choice in bands, my friend

  • Easily Marillion's best song (mind you, I LOVE the Fish era)...I'm trying to get a bunch of my friends into Marillion, and the prog epic I'm writing right now is based extremely heavily on this (as well as some Arena)

  • @worldcitizenforever A pretty apt chart...although I'm not sure why Pink Floyd is thrown in there.

  • fantastic

  • stark!!!

  • Thanks for putting this on i saw them for the script tour and at glastonbury 83? maybe but they wouldnt play this :-(

Fish was always a great performer though.

  • gli anni più tosti dei marillion , quando facevano musica al posto dei genesis .......... peccato per il seguito easy... fish sembrava potesse prendere il posto di gabriel !!

  • Well, that depends on who you mean by "we." Whoever you meant by it, I'm fairly confident my previous comment wasn't meant for them (or is it "us?"). It was meant more for those who don't seem to be accepting at all of Marillion's obvious roots.

Too many folks spout off about things they really don't know much about. Anyway, it's right there in Fish's own words. my intention certainly wasn't to minimize their efforts. They happen to be my second favorite band (with Fish, of course!).

  • @TheSentient Paradox: We all know, that Grendel is a derivative of Supper's Ready, don't we? But, I think, a really good one! Marillion continued in the 80ies, where Genesis stopped in the 70ies. So Marillion revived the prog rock era, and I am so glad, they did it!

  • I love it anyway...

  • For all youz guys that don't believe Marillion was influenced by Genesis, and all of you who refuse to believe Grendal isn't derivative of Supper's Ready, I've got bad news for you!

Go to the-company (dot com), slash forum, then search the forum there for "Supper's Ready." From there, look for the thread titled "Fish's answer - would you ever perform "Grendel" again?"

Make sure you go to the first page of the thread where Fish's response is. It's right there from the horse's mouth. Sorry guys!

  • from the bottom of my heart: Thanks!!!

  • The best Marillion's track.

  • 7:32 - 9:20 Amazing!

    Fish is great frontman.

  • this is my fav marillion tune. its a shame they dont make tunes like this anymore!

  • You mean this is THE song, don't you?! And, quite naturally, they will never be able to match Grendel's powerful message.

  • yeah dude i mean the song hehe, but the whole album is cool

  • @wasky1 Shame they don't have Fish any more...

  • @wasky1 fish's solo stuff is good

  • @wasky1 I agree.

    E P I C.

  • @wasky1

Of course they make but 30 years later!!

  • @wasky1 it's impossible! unfortunately the era is completely different now. but agree with you, Grendel is simply GREAT!

  • @wasky1 No Brazil esta pior ainda. Abraços

  • Awesome! Brings back some great memories! I was in the USN at the time and stationed in Rota Spain and my old roomdog, Beeker was stationed up in Norway. We both made it to London and saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon in 84 for 3 nights in a row and then we saw Hawkwind there as well for the next three nights! Nirvana!

  • @sfxavier

Nice story. I came from germany. I was 14 at this time and I always listened to Marillion with a good friend. Everything has passed but with this video some good memories came up into my mind. Everything was new. Cool time!

  • i'm really really jealous and im serious when i say that!

  • This song is beyond great:-D

  • grendel is the fish era pet???....Well....I like More The Hogarth Era, but i like too this song^^

  • Great this has been recorded as they dropped it after the first big tour. I was lucky enough to have seen it performed at Edinburgh.

  • I was there! these were the days - great post!

  • omg i have never hear this guitar solo and now is one of my favorites :)

  • Fish.. Where are u? come back with Marillion.. the original marillion were with u.. Marillion The best of '80.. Grendel..

Sorry for my english I'm Italian ahahah

  • i agree with you the old marilion is nothing know with its new singer

  • I was in Italy when 'Misplaced Childhood was released in '85. I played the album songs all summer long. Very fond memories.

I know exactly what you mean.

  • oh Really?! but I was not born yet in the 1985..I was born in 1991.. but i've listened many times this album.. it's fantastic.. i like so much lavander and kaleygh naturally..

  • good speech for your language :) love to learn italian lol

  • Mam odlot... To wszystko czego mi trzeba :-)

  • Very eerie song

  • Marillion's Grendel is like human should be - Human are like beasts (and this is f**** truth )

  • That's an insult to say they are like Genesis or copy Genesis. How retarded are you? lol.

  • This is magic! Thanks fish for the concert at midnight rock 2007;p

  • The best of thre british after Liverpool FC( And the beatles)

  • get outa town u lot , it leaves suppers ready in its wake.

  • hahahaha, I don´t share either any special love for this song. It has some good ideas sure, but compare it with Supper´s Ready?!?! you people are kidding...

marillion is a great band. be it a pop act, a progressive pop, whatever you wanna call it, but this song can´t compare to supper`s ready AT ALL...

  • I honestly don't understand the appeal of this song. I love early Marillion but even for true "prog" fans there is nothing PROGRESSIVE about this piece. It is overly long, tedius and they wear their influences very heavily on their sleeves here. It is imitative, not progressive (yes, this is the one case where I think they really were copping heavily from Genesis with a bit of Floyd and Yes thrown in). Probably my least favorite Fish-era Marillion song.

  • There is an awsome theory in the web: in the seventies, with the help of the KGB and with the help of the Back to The Future crew (Dr. Brown)...Peter Gabriel stole this idea to Marillion.........You understand what it mean???...GENESIS IS A COPY OF MARILLION...First was Grendel and the son of a... of Gabriel stole it for the Supper`s......Gabriel is a comunist asshole.....my god!!!!

  • say what you will about copying genesis, but marillion was fooking good live! :)

  • hahaha i agree they definetly copied genesis lol

  • Jejeje do you believe it???????? JAJAJAJA.

  • piękna muzyka, jeden z najlepszych kawałków. Wspaniałe, cudowne.....

  • I heard this when i was 13. Still have the 12" and it was the best thing EVER. When i was 13. Now its still just great. It did make me actually go and read Beowulf. Cool.

  • shit hot...i own this on 12 inch vinyl

  • Ja, ja... man sieht schon, daß er Peter Gabriel durchaus mochte. Er hat sich gern was bei ihm abgeguckt. Was aber durchaus als Kompliment gemeint ist. Ach, das war noch Musuk damals... seufz.

  • Fish and Marillion forever!!

  • What a great song, timeless music (more than 25 years old), outstanding lyrics and beautiful voice, This is why I became a fan of Marillion.

  • @avdpol1 Beautiful voice??? I wouldnt go that far.

  • I was there..... thanks

  • 2:30

Fish's vocals are AMAZING. It's masterpiece, I love him.

  • What utter rubbish.. you have no idea! Bet you're a post Fish Marillion fan..

  • Not at all! I love Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood, and own a few Fish solo albums. Marillion just needed some time to find their feet and find their own sound, which is a good one!

But Grendel, being an early composition, shows 'em clearly trying to do the Genesis thing ... I hear obvious rip-offs of Trespass and Foxtrot especially. Fish himself doesn't deny it, and he's since distanced himself from this piece and other really early Marillion.

What else can I say? A sophomoric effort at best.

  • i agree 100% .... i honestly don't like this song at all. a lot of very early marillion is just sub-par. that said, misplaced childhood is my favorite album of theirs. they were very hit or miss back then.

i also think they truly started to find their own sound when hogarth joined. they've put out some amazing and much more original music. man of a thousand faces for example. it sounds like nothing else out there.

  • why the hell did you search for this just to grab attention by saying h is better than fish

  • Yeah -- they really started adding a bit of the Rush-style Arena Prog around Fugazi, which took their music in a fresh direction.

  • why the hell did you watch it then? you dont find this on accident

  • I'd just never heard it before! Wanted to see if it was as good as people said it was. It isn't.

  • Fish the best! excellent! thanks!

  • This song is on B SIDES singles

  • This is great!

    I love it!

  • In which of Marillion's studio albums is this song on?

  • It's on remastered 2 cd Script, Kayleigh compilation, and B'sides Themselves

  • awsome!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely magic song........ I remeber when my father played it for me at night when I was five years old....... I was deeply involved in listening and little bit scared....... I'll never forget this feeling......... to bad that I cannot find a Fair Deal Studios Version of Grendel

  • The Fair Deal version is a rough demo but some parts of it surpas the recorded version. The second verse has some great atmospheric strings that give a haunted feel

  • The Fair Deal Studios Version is on the remastered 2 disc Script For A Jester's Tear. :)

  • wot an amazing song by an amazing band

  • 1:51 Scary Eyes!!!!

  • Grendel is an amazing novel. Marillion is an amazing band. WIN!

  • what's it about?

  • You know the epic poem Beowulf? And how he slays a monster called Grendel? Grendel, by John Gardner, is the story of Beowulf told from the perspective of the monster. It's very poetic and witty and philosophical and just awesome.

  • Grendel isn't a novel, he's a monster in the epic poem 'Beowulf'.
