Steve Rothery and Diz Minnitt playing as The Granmarstonberries do an excellent version of Comfortably Numb (its on Youtube). Steve is such an incredible guitarist.
What a fantastic song and video , it was a sad day when Fish left. I can remember that my mates an I made a pact in the summer of `87 that we would all go and see Marillion and the Smiths live in `88 if they toured - always regret that - as both Bands effectively ended in`87.
@stevexb12ss I totally agree, Steve. Marillion is one of those situations where they are shit without Fish & Fish is shit without them. Hogarth is the fucking worst!

Grendel this is the song which was moved me very deeply when I heard this song the first time. Then I had the beautiful dog who of course was called Grendel. gli anni più tosti dei marillion , quando facevano musica al posto dei genesis .......... peccato per il seguito easy... fish sembrava potesse prendere il posto di gabriel !!
Well, that depends on who you mean by "we." Whoever you meant by it, I'm fairly confident my previous comment wasn't meant for them (or is it "us?"). It was meant more for those who don't seem to be accepting at all of Marillion's obvious roots.
Too many folks spout off about things they really don't know much about. Anyway, it's right there in Fish's own words. my intention certainly wasn't to minimize their efforts. They happen to be my second favorite band (with Fish, of course!).

Walking across the sitting-room, I turn the television off. Sitting beside you, I look into your eyes. As the sound of motor cars fades in the night time, I swear I saw your face change, it didn't seem quite right. ...And it's hello babe with your guardian eyes so blue Hey my baby don't you know our love is true.
I heard this when i was 13. Still have the 12" and it was the best thing EVER. When i was 13. Now its still just great. It did make me actually go and read Beowulf. Cool.
Ja, ja... man sieht schon, daß er Peter Gabriel durchaus mochte. Er hat sich gern was bei ihm abgeguckt. Was aber durchaus als Kompliment gemeint ist. Ach, das war noch Musuk damals... seufz.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is so lame. This sort of derivative rip-off -- it's just "Supper's Ready" with Dungeon and Dragons lyrics -- gives prog a bad name. There's nothing remotely creative here.
Marillion are usually far above crap like this and have done much, much better.
Not at all! I love Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood, and own a few Fish solo albums. Marillion just needed some time to find their feet and find their own sound, which is a good one!
But Grendel, being an early composition, shows 'em clearly trying to do the Genesis thing ... I hear obvious rip-offs of Trespass and Foxtrot especially. Fish himself doesn't deny it, and he's since distanced himself from this piece and other really early Marillion.
i agree 100% .... i honestly don't like this song at all. a lot of very early marillion is just sub-par. that said, misplaced childhood is my favorite album of theirs. they were very hit or miss back then.
i also think they truly started to find their own sound when hogarth joined. they've put out some amazing and much more original music. man of a thousand faces for example. it sounds like nothing else out there.
Absolutely magic song........ I remeber when my father played it for me at night when I was five years old....... I was deeply involved in listening and little bit scared....... I'll never forget this feeling......... to bad that I cannot find a Fair Deal Studios Version of Grendel
The Fair Deal version is a rough demo but some parts of it surpas the recorded version. The second verse has some great atmospheric strings that give a haunted feel
You know the epic poem Beowulf? And how he slays a monster called Grendel? Grendel, by John Gardner, is the story of Beowulf told from the perspective of the monster. It's very poetic and witty and philosophical and just awesome.
This is one song. Why are there 2 parts?

Walking across the sitting-room, I turn the television off. Sitting beside you, I look into your eyes. As the sound of motor cars fades in the night time, I swear I saw your face change, it didn't seem quite right. ...And it's hello babe with your guardian eyes so blue Hey my baby don't you know our love is true.

Ja, ja... man sieht schon, daß er Peter Gabriel durchaus mochte. Er hat sich gern was bei ihm abgeguckt. Was aber durchaus als Kompliment gemeint ist. Ach, das war noch Musuk damals... seufz.

What a great song, timeless music (more than 25 years old), outstanding lyrics and beautiful voice, This is why I became a fan of Marillion.

This is so lame. This sort of derivative rip-off -- it's just "Supper's Ready" with Dungeon and Dragons lyrics -- gives prog a bad name. There's nothing remotely creative here.
Marillion are usually far above crap like this and have done much, much better.

What utter rubbish.. you have no idea! Bet you're a post Fish Marillion fan..

What else can I say? A sophomoric effort at best.

i agree 100% .... i honestly don't like this song at all. a lot of very early marillion is just sub-par. that said, misplaced childhood is my favorite album of theirs. they were very hit or miss back then.
i also think they truly started to find their own sound when hogarth joined. they've put out some amazing and much more original music. man of a thousand faces for example. it sounds like nothing else out there.

why the hell did you search for this just to grab attention by saying h is better than fish
3L1mn8R 2 years ago
Yeah -- they really started adding a bit of the Rush-style Arena Prog around Fugazi, which took their music in a fresh direction.

why the hell did you watch it then? you dont find this on accident

I'd just never heard it before! Wanted to see if it was as good as people said it was. It isn't.

Absolutely magic song........ I remeber when my father played it for me at night when I was five years old....... I was deeply involved in listening and little bit scared....... I'll never forget this feeling......... to bad that I cannot find a Fair Deal Studios Version of Grendel
Nynulka78 2 years ago 2
The Fair Deal version is a rough demo but some parts of it surpas the recorded version. The second verse has some great atmospheric strings that give a haunted feel

The Fair Deal Studios Version is on the remastered 2 disc Script For A Jester's Tear. :)

what's it about?
jimmywires500 2 years ago
You know the epic poem Beowulf? And how he slays a monster called Grendel? Grendel, by John Gardner, is the story of Beowulf told from the perspective of the monster. It's very poetic and witty and philosophical and just awesome.
Melatinini 2 years ago
Grendel isn't a novel, he's a monster in the epic poem 'Beowulf'.
