Is it all about the drug? What about the individual entity that is Hendrix? Does that not account for something? Sure, the substances gave an abstract insight into an altered state of reality that is the road less traveled by many. Hendrix had style, heart and creativity along with a celestial insight that draws people to his beautiful music. The birds in the video are lovely. If ye hath an ear..listen.
@zalman595 the problem with hendrix if he didnt die that night he would of probably died very soon after and apparently he went downhill in skill before he died because of all the drugs
@ILLbiteURfaceCNT Dude jimi tripped on acid till he could play guitar like a beast... maybe if you knew something about hendrix or drugs youd understand
listen to the last section where hendrix is playing a guitar symphony, multi-tracking various guitar lines combining elements of funk, rock and country; it's not a question of his technique; you are listening to one of the most innovative MUSICIANS OF THE 20th century.whata loss we all suffered when he died so young. this guy would have kept on creating for decades.
the first time i heard jimmy was when I was 9... my father played on one of those huge discs (LP) and i said: "what the hell is that... its horrible.." now that im older i realised how wrong I was long live the guitar god
P.D. I´m from mexico so any complainment about my writting must be in mexican spanish, remember that is hard to learn another language
This is the song Jimi wrote for, and about Allison Steele, The late night DJ from WNEW FM in New York City, known as The Nightbird. Sadly, she went to join Jimi in 1995.
ships passing though the night, a variation of this song which appears in the album Valley of Neptune, is imo the better version. You'll be pleasantly surprised by it when you hear it, it's one of my favorites.
@adrianbpj hehe it took me a while. Don't forget to thumbs up !! :DD
no but really its a joke or what ever. This part of the tube was missing the teenager who gets thumbs up for liking this music at such an impostor of an age.
This song has a country barnyard twang that's a weird twist for Hendrix but accompanied by all the usual guitar magic that makes it inimitable. The reason Jimi is a musical genius is because he created a style of music only he can play. Rock was taking a turn towards country influences at that point and typically Hendrix was on top of it like a preemptive master of the form.
@lilwing80 Jimi had roots in the country blues back in Nashville when he was learning. Rock was taking a slight country turn with Graham Parsons and The Stones and others in 1970. If you know Jimi he had a habit of hearing what was going on out there, imitating it, and bettering it, like he did with Dylan. Trust me, he thought about it.
I get tired of going to Guitar Center and just see young guys shredding and most of them are damn good at it, but it's not gonna get you anywhere. Too many shreddars out there. Hendrix was not a shredder.
Despite lots of people saying he was struggling for musical direction near the end of his life this song & everything else he was working on for the next album are masterpieces to my ears.
I wish casual listeners would dig deeper than into the hendrix catalog than purple haze lol
@riverdale999 No slide in this....just his fingers....similar to other songs...but I am 54 and this has always been my favorite hendrix song. The buildup to the ending is fantastic and then he releases it as he drops down on it to finish it off. just like an orgasm.
the first time i heard this song i was really drunk and stoned and this song took me to a place where ive never been. it seemed like the song itself got me more messed up. lol.
I have a rare studio take of this that matches exactly to 'ships passing through the night' on the newly released 'valleys of neptune'. Ive been thinking of putting it up. hmmmmm;)
@danH85 - Voodoo Soup=D Just one of the many fantastic songs on it! A definite must have and showed the direction Jimi was heading before his Sad demise..
Jimi is the king of rock and blues. He proved you don't need to have you head in a book and know theory to be a master. Learn the best way - by ear and play what you feel.
I like the chicken scratchin barnyard country roots of this song just when rock was exploring country tinges in the early 70's. However Hendrix implants lead guitar neon sounds that express a level of profundity at the fullest extent of the form normally only reached within the highest genius of classical music.
Hendrix was of such genius and masterful control that once the song got going he could paint jazz accents or cosmic atmosphere into the soundscape bringing the whole arrangement to a higher level that was only Hendrix. The song was just the excuse - really...
This is the song that really turned me onto Jimi as a real fan. I knew of all his hits but when I heard this this really helped me realize just how great he is.
I'm 24 now and have been a Hendrix fan for about 12 years now. I've got all his albums a really sweet box set, too. And for some reason this song just stands out more than all the others. His guitar playing in this is so amazing to me, especially towards the end.
