Thumbs up if Friday Night Videos brought you here from the 1980's. I was blown away when I first say this video. The song is beautiful-but the video is haunting, sad, yet somehow beautiful. One of the greatest videos made.
I used to have a video of her songs from her collection i always used to rewind it back to this song, was the last son on the video. Miss rewinding videos =(
Damn i forgot about this beautiful song. It's funny that i see comments about lady gaga, i thought the same thing when i heard born this way, absolutely HORRIBLE. Reminds me of all the rappers ripping the isley brothers off and calling it "music"
This song makes want to cry. It doesn't remind me of my dad, which was a great man, but an ex that was very abusive. I got away from him but very fresh in my head. This song describes the way I felt while I was with him.
i think a lot of us has been passed trough some critical tiems in our lifes, thanks you madonna for wirintign from your heart what all the people feel
When this tape came out..it was like Madonna could hear my heart. My Dad was very abusive when I was growing up. When my mom was not around he would go on rampage...I would go in my room and BLAST this song..then "The Act of Contrion." That was at the end of the tape. bless her for writing this song. <3
I remember back in 1984 when living in Mary Graham Hall of Stockton, Ca. I was very depressed, almost suicidal, but then I heard 'Like a Virgin' and from then on, whenever I feel sad I listen to something from Madonna and it never fails to cheer me up. It's sentimental I suppose, but she will always represent a light at the end of a tunnel for me.
"[Oh Father] is what the listener thinks it is, all open to interpretation. I just wrote the song, it's up to others to interpret them to mean what they want them to mean." - Madonna.
This song sounds like mysterious religion how we're here on earth one moment then gone the next.It is a beautiful ballad.I wonder if this is about her real father Tony Ciccone. She sings beautifully and sad.I love the Catholic aspect and the black and white religious effect to it. Two thumbs up.Go Madonna
This may sound weird, but I had similar emotions when I found out that Osama bin Laden died. On the one hand, I'm thinking 'rot in hell, terrorist prick'; yet on the other I wonder if it is right to rejoice over another's passing, no matter how evil. Whether it's a terrorist or an abusive father, either way the last word is in Divine Providence's hands, and I am glad of that.
@RebelKnightCSA then you are a sensitve soul, mirred in others that could give a shit about life as a whole..i find most human activity to be against nature.
this reminds me of my own father we fight almost everyday and he is a alcoholic when i was a child my parents where difforce becaus he was agressif but i always blame my mother for the difforce and not my dad when i was a child and when i was sixteen i know the real story he always spend money for alcohol and not for me and my sister and becaus he was a danger for use
This song came and went, and you rarely, if ever, hear it on the radio now. I’ve always liked it though, and the video is one of Madonna’s best. The part that’s always stayed with me, like an ache in my heart, is the way the young girl turns around at 0:39, as the music peaks.
"I saw my mother, looking very beautiful and lying as if she were asleep in an open casket. Then I noticed that my mother's mouth looked funny. It took me some time to realize that it had been sewn up. In that awful moment, I began to understand what I had lost forever. The final image of my mother, at once peaceful yet grotesque, haunts me today also." Madonna
Madonna Ciccone: May you live 100 years, make another 100mm+ & find all you seek.. I remember watching "Oh Father", a kid in high school ~ you put me in touch with my *sadness. Then I eased away from it. Thanks. If we met, I'd ask you to find shelter from the deepest part within you - that place so moving and incredibly real (as though a divine presence is there). Hmm. Loving & adoring you STILL :) Shine on.. you're a God-send xO *Andrea LoCascio
I just cannot watch this video or listen to this song without crying...if this be the measure of a pop song with power & depth this one has both..in huge measure..wonderful
this has got to be her most underrated song. its a shame that future generations will only know madonna as "that lady that kissed britney spears that one time". every time i hear this song, and/or watch this video i'm just completely moved and damn near unnerved by it. it's impossible not to be.
this is so sad :( so many people can relate to wat Madonna had to go through....I like seeing this side of Madonna...it shows thts she real just like the rest of us
The third Madonna artwork to scream "A victim of a kind of rage-right behind Borderline and Live to Tell, Oh Father is her version of Mellencamp's The Authority Song in which Madonna Fights the Authority, the Authority Always Wins! I happen to be an atheist. This song makrs me believe that God does make mistakes from time to time. In Oh Father, Madonna rails against a horrible and unfair Establishment! I just replace "father" with "mother" and tears shed....Rest in Peace Mum...you had it hard yourself ad tried your best with the tools that you were given, you were not given any....so.....Love you.
whatever anybody says, this is a masterpiece, extremely underrated (one of ver y few Madonna songs never to have entered the UK top 10). 20+ years on, it sounds fantastic and the video n story behind it is heartbreaking. a true work of art speaking to your soul
This song for me is about turning away from the evil of organized Christian religion and the benevolent Holy Father they have forced down our throats for centuries.
@sasacel No, I think she talks about her father "Maybe someday when I look back I'll be able to say you didn't mean to be cruel, somebody hurt you too" Such a sad song and the video :(
@belgradegirl86 THE SADEST PART IS WHEN THE KID IS DANCING ON THE MOM'S GRAVE. THAT'S THE CLOSEST WAY SHE CAN BE TO HER AND IN HER HEART OF COURSE......BUT JUST TO LOVE IN SPIRIT IS PAINFUL CAUSE U WANT TO SEE THE PERSON.
TBH I was never much of a fan of Madonna's early "faster" stuff.... but as time has gone on and she's matured and released songs like this it's really made me appreciate her work. This is probably one of the most haunting, emotionally-charged songs that I've ever listened to.
I think this is one of her best videos ever...there's so much going on visually. The doors being huge, and she can't reach the doorknob, the almost constant shadows, marking the passage of time...
@68THELZEPPELIN....Thank you sooo much friend. I really appreciate it. I'm doing much better. I'm a successful fashion designer in NYC now and life is good. My father is still alive, but we're estranged unfortunately. I think he wants a relationship now,but I'm not really interested. I wish him the best though.

this song goes out to my father. i miss him everyday and i wish i could have at least 5 mintues with him to say that i am sorry for being mad at him . in october 25th it will be 3 years that he has passed on . i too have seen my father in a open casket and ever since that day i can't sleep because when i close my eyes i see him in that casket and it haunts me to no end.......
You can't hurt me now.... indeed

Hello Everybody!!
There’s nothing that I want more than to come true my dream.
Day and night I always dream with open eyes.
When I sing I can be who really I am and there’s a me no one knows.
Now I can say “Music is who I am not what I do”
Singing is a way to express oneself emotions through a song.
All I just want is a chance.
Please stop by my channel and check out some covers I’ve uploaded.
I’ll be grateful, Thank you so much!!

Who is this girl that played the young Madonna? She looks like Dakota Fanning but I don't really think it is her.

this song goes out to my father. i miss him everyday and i wish i could have at least 5 mintues with him to say that i am sorry for being mad at him . in october 25th it will be 3 years that he has passed on . i too have seen my father in a open casket and ever since that day i can't sleep because when i close my eyes i see him in that casket and it haunts me to no end.......
