My understanding from the research we did was that this was unclear. They are certainly not highly toxic in small doses otherwise there would be more about it on the Internet, and we just avoided breathing them to play safe.
It's harmful only to the grape:-)_ The microwave door has to be closed for you to operate the microwave so it's impossible to do this while you are personally exposed to it.
We've done about 50 of these and no damage to the microwave. They say it can cause the radio tube to overheat and burnout but we've been doing this over and over on our and other microwaves and no problems at all.
I heard the gasses that escape the microwave at the end are toxic.
