Film and stage are different mediums. Patinkin's falsetto would have annoyed the heck out of me in the film. I had the same impression with Phantom's Brightman and Crawford. What works wonderfully on a distant stage with 8 performances a week won't cut it on a movie screen. Age is less of a factor on a stage than a screen.
They should have given Patti LuPone the movie. Madonna trashed that film with her 'acting' and her vocal. I saw Patti in Les Miserable the first week in opened in London. What a star. Apparently she was furious she didn't get the Alan Parker Evita film. It would have been a great movie if she had.
@caerus12 Exactly! They had to change the keys and range of all of the songs so Madonna could fit them in her pitiful vocal range. Patti Lupone's autobiography is a great, dishy read. Evidently, Barbra Streisand was the first person to option the Evita movie, but she was too old by the time it was filmed.
@Rodeo6521 A really good friend of mine in the theatre in London has worked with Patti LuPone and says she is lovely - really gracious and good to all the people back stage whoever they are. Unlike Madonna who when she was on stage in London insisted that everyone refer to her as 'Mrs Richie' and that no-one was allowed to look at her in the eyes.
i wish they used lupone as evita in profile as the poster photo. could you imagine that image 7 feet tall. almost as big as the two personalities on the stage of the broadway theatre back in 1980.
I can't watch the Madonna version, it's just a version. The Rice/Webber production is the original masterpiece. Still own the ORIGINAL vinyl purchased in the 70's.
Mandy Patinkin ROCKS as Che. No need to ponder the Greek choir element of his character, or the fact the two (Evita and Che) never actually interacted in real life.
I love seeing Patinkin and LuPone in their youth. She was thin and hot. I wish I'd been in the New York area when the play was on Broadway. What ever it cost for tickets would have been well worth it.
Mandy and Patti are appearing in concert in Toronto for six days, starting on February 9th. Though my sisters and I can't afford to see any of the shows, we're definitely going to visit the stage door!! We're really looking forward to seeing Mandy again, and really want to meet Patti!!!! :o)
I just love him. Thanks for posting. I was upset at the casting of Banderas in the movie but thought he did a really good job. He's just not Mandy. :-) I won't comment on Madonna but when you compare anyone to Lupone, it's going to be tough. And I liked Jonathan Pryce better than the guy on B-Way. He showed so much emotion.
I was there at the original cast production on B'way. I'll never forget young (then, relatively unknown) Mandy Patinkin in the aisle next to me, singing up to Evita on the stage... A thrilling evening!
Funny. I knew he was a singer before I knew he was an actor. When I first saw him on Chicago Hope, I said the same thing about his acting! LOL! He's a great actor too.
Thanks! I'm glad that you like it! The photos come from various magazine articles on Mandy Patinkin, books, the booklet that came with the EVITA LP, and the internet. If you would like to have copies of the photos, most of them can be found on my web site called Ellen's Mandy Patinkin Page. Just look in the Photos: Theater section.

What happened to the end of the song? Did you cut it off coz there's more of the song near the end where Evita sings her part.

Mandy Patakin as Chë...most gorgeous tenor voice in the world (except for that one from lavapies!)

His voice has so much more control. The difference between Mandy and all the other singers is incredible. Especially Antonio Banderas.

I could just be an Italian interested in fellow Italians, but I actually think Patti was beautiful

Is Mandy okay these days? I know he had corneal transplants, so maybe the casting of the movie coincided with this troublesome time in his life?
