Why don't they pledge that they will be educated, informed, and kind? Because the purity movement is still about sex. It's a commodity to be traded from father to husband at marriage. And while we're at it, let's look at some statistics: A federally funded study found that those taught only abstinence "had just as many sexual partners as nonparticipants and had sex at the same median age as nonparticipants.” They're also more likely to have sex without contraceptives.
What's the difference between this and driving down the street (like the Muslims do) waving the bloody sheet from her first act of sex? They're both paraded around as symbols of her "pre-marital virginity".
I think it's very wrong of (most likely well intentioned) parents to put so much pressure on such young girls. Hopefully, these parents will love their sons and daughters and still consider them to be "pure" whether or not they have sex before marriage.
Sex is very much a human need, and yes while it's good to be sensible about who you have it with, there's no need to consider someone "less pure" just because they can't wait until marriage to have it.
@richard20bris The Bible says in Hebrews 13:4 (NKJV) "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge". This might sound archaic and intolerant to the world, but it's the truth from God. These sins often lead to other sins such as abortion. Although God must judge these things because He is holy, He is also full of grace and mercy. I don't know your relationship with God, but I genuinely care about you. Please consider these things.
@DCoonie i care about you also - so i urge you to consider coming back to reality. in fact, i don't care about your relationship to god - it's your business and i hope heaven is all you dreamed. however i don't believe in god, and my belief is as valid as your belief; my conviction of this truth is as strong as yours. so given the lack of evidence one way or the other - lets leave it up to conscious adult women to make decisions about their sexuality - not their fathers or their priests.
@sparkplug333 "my belief is as valid as your belief; my conviction of this truth is as strong as yours" You've made a logically fallacy - you are asserting an absolute truth, that "there is not truth". If my belief that "God is real" is as valid as your belief, why do say that I should "come back to reality". It's like saying "I am intolerant to intolerance". Why don't you want to believe in God? If you don't believe in Heaven, what do you think will happen to you after you die?
it's really good to pledge your virginity but it's not good to pledge it to your own father it should be a pledge to the daughters self to remain pure until marriage in my own opinion i'm still a virgin myself but i havn't pledged it to anyone but myself and proud of it
When girls pledge their purity, its not just to fathers. In reality, they're doing it for God. We should remain pure because we seek to give glory to God, and to please Him. Romans 5:27 (NKJV) “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." God cares about purity from the heart, and when the heart is right, physical action will follow.

Do some of these girls even know what they're pledging to? Some of them don't look a day older than 9. :/
