  • which scale and which chords are you using?

  • best cover! thank you for this awesome perfomance!

  • Dude, thank you very much. Your version of the song helped me out a lot. Pee faced drunk tryin to sing and play by myself and you saved the day. Merry Christmas!

  • When I see videos like this, it makes me wish I had a good voice so I could make music....

  • fucking outstanding....

  • well played sir !!! nuff said

  • Looks like bandwithy took just enough freshman college music theory to be dangerous. Keep up the outstanding work Tom!!!

  • This video deserves much more clicks.

  • One of the best covers on Youtube! This guy is fantastic!

  • great song man, great vocals and great guitar playing. I play a Resonator Guitar gbut I don't use a flat pick, and my vocals are not as clear as yours. Great work.

  • that was good

  • DUDE!!! You blew my mind. I love what you did and added your own touch to it and adding in With or Without You!? Genius. Screw the like button i'm gonna favorite this. (I also pressed the like button because I liked it...a lot)

  • @thadeusgodfrey thank you very much!

  • An excellent version. Love de "with or without you" tweaking. Keep working and sharing.

  • great performance man, I personally congratulate you. peace

  • Your arrangement isn't working particularly well here. You have homogenized what was a unique tune. Lyrically this song can't be played in the style of Jack Johnson, doesn't work. I would say if your going to play in this style examine the work of Michael Hedges. The overall playing and singing is good, but I think you might surprise yourself if you try to internalize the lyrics and then configure an arrangement.

  • @bandwidthy I appreciate your feedback.. But I disagree. I think sometimes people who review music, poetry, and literature go WAAY overboard in their assumptions. It's a cover. It should be different. If I wanted to just sing the song exactly as Bingham had I would have used a karaoke machine. Just because lyrics are serious and/or sad, doesn't mean that it has to be a slow arpeggiated guitar tune. Some would say it's more creative to have music that is stylistically opposite of the lyrics

  • @bobostonepony

Typically it's not a good policy to offer refutations to constructive criticism.

Despite your personal rationalization, no serious musician would suggest that melodic and lyrical content should run in opposition. Asymmetry works in musical composition, but this exactly a Schubert piece. Former statement stands. If you're looking for mere validation close the comments section or buy a dog. I wouldn't have commented had I not thought you were potentially very good.

  • @bandwidthy I'm not allowed a little debate if I disagree? Is this American Idol? I don't respect your opinion any less, and if I felt you didn't know what you were talking about I would have just ignored your comment.

  • @bobostonepony

If you're going to be in the creative arts certainly you need to be able to defend your work, but you cannot be personally defensive. Your comments read of the latter breed. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck.

Though I would say to be careful not to overemphasize rhythm, which I think is specifically making this rendition awkward. Happy playing.

  • @bandwidthy I think regardless of any amount of relevant insight you feel applies to toms interpretation of this song the quality inherent within it speaks for itself and If you feel that toms approach towards this cover version is inappropriate then I (and I'm sure many others who have read your comments) would say to you that your approach in putting that point across needs a little work on its arrangement, specifically tact.

  • @MrNerdSmasher

Perhaps I was irate and needed a punching bag, though that doesn‘t invalidate the criticism. Nevertheless I appreciate your attempt to deftly inject yourself into what was already a stale conversation. A little self projection goes a long way, right? By the way, there is no linguistic or logical conjunct between arrangement and tact as used. Next time you feel clever maybe you won’t end on a dud. I appreciate the fact that you’re citing me though.

  • @bandwidthy What i said still stands I'm afraid, there really was no reason for you to respond other than what fueled your initial comment on this video and that is to aggravate needlessly. I could quite easily churn out a wordy retort but I think I'll follow the guidelines for this sort of situation and choose not to feed the troll any further beyond this point =) Happy stick prodding.

  • @MrNerdSmasher

How amicable of you, how mature. How does your pedestal feel? You were in the mud but left with clean boots. Right? Unwarranted feelings of superiority aside, you did play the masturbatory confrontation game, of course with the stipulated subtext that you weren’t playing. Your hypocrisy knows no bounds. Playing my game you belittled yourself. You’ve been shown a fool in your attempted cleverness, want the last word, and can’t diffuse the situation, so you feign the high-ground.

  • @bobostonepony Great Job Tom, I personally enjoyed it and will be sharing it with a few friends who also enjoyed the original and will no doubt enjoy this version too =) I checked out your other covers and you really do a great job on them, keep doing what your doing and keep staving off the nay sayers that want you to clone instead of interpret

  • @bandwidthy Maybe it doesn't work for you but it sure as hell works for a lot of people including me.I'm happy to say you're in the minority in thinking this doesn't work

Music appreciation is very much a personal thing and your comments are probably only resonating with you

keep up the great work Tom!

  • @bandwidthy I have read your comments and you are indeed a wordy and intelligent fellow. I would say, to a fault. I have only to LISTEN instead of analyze this cover to feel tom's interpretation as solid, passionate and true. I feel it, and feeling it is all I need to know that it works for me and others. Perhaps one day you will disconnect yourself from your own brain long enough to REALLY open your heart to REAL music like this.

  • @malfattimusic he's no longer on YouTube.

  • cool version man ;)

  • This is great you've got real talent and Mr Bschultz is one big saddo, you deserve every success Happy Christmas

  • Tom I have shopped you to many people this week, and almost everyone agrees. You flat ass have a god given talent pal. Im a 40 musician and I can not think of anyone who has come along and caused me to pay this much attention in quite some time. I would love to try and be apart of your rise to the top. I am an able producer and aint scared to back this kind of talent. I may be reached at cowhorseman@comast.com and from that point would gladly share background and contact info !

  • @alcowboy1 thanks a lot, I appreciate the compliments. I'm working really hard right now to play some live shows in Austin... it's taken me a long time to get out in front of people. But again, I appreciate you taking the time to comment and to share my videos with others.

  • Nice voice, nice cover!

  • very very very good

  • I really like this song a lot and your version of it was truely as good as Mr. Bingham's. You made it your own. I seriously hope you play in a band right now. If not, it's a shame.

  • awesome!

  • This is my favorite song right now. Never thought somebody could do a version so different and make it good. Dude you made this song your own and did a damn fine job at it.

  • different but cool man, good work

  • amazing voice man...great original version...u should start a band up

  • excellent job! way to make it your own.

  • Gud har sänt oss en ängel han heter visst Tom...

  • Very good!

  • Very Good!

  • great!

  • @ bschultz4422 You would be very shocked to see what a little windows movie editor can do to a video my friend. It cant fix a recording delay but the audio alterations u can do are amazing. also look to the right there is a mic bub....he probably had software to tune up with so i give a 5/5

  • hey guy, nice and very emotional cover-version of a cool song :)

i like the way you changed the guitar-pattern.

    keep on rockin ;)

  • gotta love a hater!!! haha!!!! good job man! i just started this stuff need to learn how to my stuff up 2! lol! check me out n tell me what u think... brianwhite2376... same song with sum bs that came on the pc... how u set up exactly would be a great help! thanks n keep the music up bro!!!

  • @Brianwhite2376 im gonna do a video showing my setup and my recording process very soon

  • Always amazing. First heard your cover of I'm on fire a couple of years ago. And since then I have been coming back =).

  • dude i love the nice twist to the guitar it sound great great job

  • LOL..I read the post from the guy about your not singing and playing, I love those kind of comments. I saw all his videos and was real impressed. (HUH? what videos.) I guess I never heard the song all the way through till Mama bought it and I thought I'd cover it if not too many others did. A lot of folks have so I won't, your's is up there with the better covers though. I've had the same happen to me so no biggie, keep'em coming. I'll do the same...including overdubs.

  • Folks, most people couldn't make a video like that even if Ryan Bingham sang it for them. So I'd say ten thumbs up for Tom's incredible talent. Singing, playing and recording!

  • Great job! I would love to know the strum pattern that you use for this song.

  • riiiiight...

  • @marydwyer14119 is that a bad riiiiight or a good riiiiiiiight?

  • @bobostonepony better be a good riiiight :p Because that cover was a ridonkeyless! You have such a powerfull voice... hmm... wonder if i somehow can steal it... >:| mohahah

  • awesome cover Tom.

  • This is great man!

  • DUDE, i don't know you but watching you gave me the same feelings i got when the credits started after the movie. i started to cry. why? i have no clue. i guess after seeing the movie and being a struggling musician myself it "struck a chord" with me. after seeing the comments some of these negative people left i will stand up and say that i don't give a damn. i know how recording works. the reverb adds a beautiful ambiance. WOW man...just wow. keep tugging those heart strings brother.

  • Kewl, I like it. Keep it up.

  • FANTASTIC! I just saw this movie the other day and loved it ! rlly good job

  • your the best person that did the weary kind that i've seen

  • ok tommy boy, i know alot about recording, i have worked in Dreamland Studios, Skyline Studios and many more. First of all, condenser mics are used for recording. Its clear here that you're only trying to sound better then you actually are. HELLO PEOPLE, this guy is NOT good. He's a lying bastard

  • ok tommy boy, i know alot about recording, i have worked in Dreamland Studios, Skyline Studios and many more. First of all, condenser mics are used for recording. • By far the best cover I have seen when it comes to originality. You did very well. Quick question, what chords are you using to play this song? Is it D, A7, Bm, then G? Again, well done.

  • play it live dude..

  • I am not saying that it is not your voice but you are obviously lip syncing to something that you previously recodred in a studio. Same reason we cant see the guitar, because no guitar would sound that good in a bedroom. You are probably playing the guitar too but we are not hearing what it sounds like in your room. Plus we are hearing extra instruments while you are playing. Kind of a dead giveaway. Wonder what you would sound like without all the help?

  • @bschultz4422 um... are you ok? I forgive you because I'm guessing you don't know ANYTHING about recording... but i'll humor you and tell you exactly how this was done. I am singing into a condensor mic (like they use in studios) which is running to my MAC... where it connects to GarageBand software... there, there is an effect called "LIVE" which adds a tad bit of compression and some reverb. AFTER, I recorded the vocal AND guitar, I went back over it and added extra guitars.

  • @bschultz4422 maybe watch a couple of the other FIFTY videos ive done... you'll see that im playing the guitar

  • @bschultz4422 c'mon man (or girl i dont know), its not that hard to make it sound nice nowadays. if you look in the down right corner you can see the mic. thats the type of mic you use in a radioshow or recording singing with.

the guitar sounds to me like it have electronics built in and that it is just plugged in. pretty fucking awesome what we can do nowadays. and for the overdubbing? its not too difficult to do after you recorded a "live" song.

and to bobostonepony, nice cover man!

  • @bschultz4422 ...he would sound amazing. You should really check out his other videos as he said. He's really great. You need to learn not to judge something by first glance. Do you like what you hear ?...well if so, COMPLIMENT it. It's breathtaking. Breat great job Tom. I always find myself coming back to this. Best cover of this song out there by far.

  • @bschultz4422 I wonder what you sound like, jerk. Why don't you put up a video of you doing some music. When you can put your stuff online, and let people stand around throwing salt in your game and they can't play, then you can go out and play critic. Till then, you oughtta shut yer yap. Jackwagon. >.<

  • @bschultz4422 Yea he more than likely used editing software after he recorded the video but I give it 9 times out of 10 that it was all done in this one video. The other guitar would require later editing yes but thats common sense. Good job man.

  • on the chris brown remix what were your autotune settings?

  • @mazanobeh10 seriously?

  • @bobostonepony yeah

  • You really got a sound man!. I'm liking it. Thanks for coming by my channel. Great on the vocals. Seriously.

  • awesome performance... deep

  • Love to be able to strum a guitar like you, do you give lessions

  • Dude how come i havent seen u on american idol or something? id call fro sweden just to vote :)

  • Hole Lee shit

  • Great cover man :)

  • Very pleasant voice! nice sound, little echo, not banal rhythm - bravo!

  • man you remain me freddy king

  • Hey man. I'm learning this one to cover it myself, it was cool hearing a different take on it. Sounds great with the chords in place of the finger picking. You've got a great tone to your voice, I'll definitely subscribe to hear more.

  • Dang dude, you're pretty good. Really good voice and a good "feel" for the music.

  • nice version and voice.

  • I think covers should bring something new out of the song. No doubt the playing & production are polished, except this song is about living at the ragged edges of things, and a smooth version cuts the heart of the piece in half. I like the musical thematic "With or Without You" tie-in, but you left it as a musical quote rather than a deeper reference--it's a cover, so no harm in going for the medley approach with no apology next time.

  • nice job man.... great song. the dude would be proud.

  • Great voice for sure. Maybe not use the straight forward camera angle though yeah?

  • @castletonartstud i'm not the prettiest guy in the world.... I don't think any camera angle is gonna help me

  • @bobostonepony Good thing you are not "pretty", what you are is handsome and you have great eyes, the window to your soul my friend. Don't change anything here. Hugsss This song is beautiful and you always sing with such emotion I can't help but be moved by you everytime. Love ya sweety.

  • nice racoon make up man, I like that touch lol. Man you are good, I wish I had the power to get you more exposure. Keep it up tom

  • What kind of microphone are you using? I am in the market for one and really like this sound.

  • amazing, truely amazing.

  • This is Legit. Ryan's version was better for the movie... This is by far a much better commercial version. Great job.

  • Tom, you blew Ryan Bingham out of the water with this. I really liked your version so much better!

  • I respect your opinion but you'd have to be a moron to think this is better than Ryan's.

  • You blew Ryan Bingham out of the water, Tom.

  • the best cover

  • Quite beautiful and incredible. I really love this and your interpretation. Your guitar playing and vocals are spot on man. Respect

  • better than the ryan bingham... really

  • Goddamn dude this is better then the original

  • Exactly the kind of voice I love, 5* :)

  • WELL PLAYED! BEAUTIFUL VOICE, MAN!

  • Very impressive voice!

  • I just got my first mp3 player and this will be the second song I load onto it. I will enjoy this many times over! Oh, also really brilliant the way you fitted that other song in during the bridge. What's the name of that tune, I can't remember..?

  • with or without you U2

  • and the guitar melody to "we're comin to America" :)

  • Comment removed
