Hello everyone! Just discovering Gigi and was intrigued by this thread. I'm Ethiopian, but raised in the US in a small town with a very small Ethiopian community so unfortunately I don't understand Amharic or any other dialects. Will someone give me the gist of this beautiful sounding song. Thank You!
When I hear this music I just want to go there and fix food with the people and eat with them and dance to this music. What could be the explanation for that when i am just an American white lady ?

OMG what a singer GIGI is!!! This is music...which its instrument is so comfortable, not disturbing as in other ethiopian musics these days!! Gigi u are always my best!!!

I learned french because I lived in a French speaking country most of my life. Amharic because some relatives speak it. Awigna, my mother taught it to me. Arabic, career reasons. Agews speak Agewigna...as far as I know theres two dialects of it in Ethiopia...Awi (which this song is sang in) and Khamtagna spoken by the Agews in Wag-Hemra

It is true Agews migrated from north and settled in Gojjam. that is why the language and the culture is influeced by Amharas and also they are assimilated to the Amhara people. But i don't see no connction between Agew and Oromo unless they /Oromo/ want to be everywhere. They are not claiming only the Agew midir land they think the whole part of Ethiopia belongs to them. I donot know where they get this from but i know Agew predominent people of the northern part even before the semetic came.

yep...i am ....but my parents were both born in amhara region ...so i guess they'd only be considered gojjame and gondere lol...but theyre parents are from different places...except my maternal grandfather....he is only a western gojjame but now i think its called metekel or agew midir...but my maternal grandmother is a southern tigraen.....and my dad, well his mother is a "falasha-murai" from yismala and achefer and his dad is a gojjame...i think that should sum it up lol

i am Agew /from Awi/ this is a wedding song cause i remember when my sister got married, this song was sang by my families / this one is modified/. i am proud of Ethiopia and like other tribes we were neglected by the formers goverment and the kingdoms but don't try to take advantage of it. Do not preach just like Agew is Oromo!

ya thats right lol......but i get what you mean i heard people saying that OLF believes agew midir is theirs and stuff....and am like hell no....and not only that but they say that they migrated up north which they actually did and went into pawi chagni adet kosober and like yilmanadensa(but that ones true) but when they said chagni and adet am like wth....and they said the language is similar...it is so not similar there is no alphabet for awi language ....but now sabaen is being used i hear

It is true Agews migrated from north and settled in Gojjam. that is why the language and the culture is influeced by Amharas and also they are assimilated to the Amhara people. But i don't see no connction between Agew and Oromo unless they /Oromo/ want to be everywhere. They are not claiming only the Agew midir land they think the whole part of Ethiopia belongs to them. I donot know where they get this from but i know Agew predominent people of the northern part even before the semetic came.
