War against Japan was a war against an entire country wich had a marine, planes, tanks, etc... They needed to conquer territories, secure supply routes in order to attack. The present situation has nothing to do with that.

In 1776, the people who went to war against england liberated their own country. That's a big difference. Nobody can go and deliver democracy with bombs. The people have to liberate themselves. Of course, Saddam was a brutal dictator, had it would had been nearly impossible for his people to overthrow him, especially until 1990. Before that, he was supported by the U.S. (his crimes werent a problem then) and bought arms from them to fight Iran and was helped to develop chemical weapons.
