actually, Zato-1 is still the host, but Eddie has taken over Zato's dead body, Zato is not alive, hence when faust says "your cell structure is already disintergrating" on Eddie's story in GGXX. Eddie is a forbidden beast that inhabits Zato's shadow. When the character Millia Rage dies, she will be taken over by the forbidden beast in her hair, just as Zato-1 (a reference to a blind samurai, Zatoichi) was taken over by his shadow (Eddie).

I don't think Eddie can keep using a dead body as a host. It'll sustain him for a little while, but eventually Zato's going to rot, and maybe Eddie's use of the body makes it deteriorate faster. Zato no longer has any influence on Eddie's actions aside from their shared history: he's completely dead, and his body is just Eddie's puppet (albeit one he needs in order to survive.)
