I have a 6corepc@4.1Ghz with 6970s in crossfire, BUT I managed to snag a "broken" Quad core 2.7GHz G5 with liquid cooling off of craigslist for 40 bucks.I flashed an ati card, replaced the 7 year old PRAM battery, and it booted perfectly. The G5 can't out encode my pc, but it sure feels like it can. It really does run very smooth. The G5 is to computers as the 67' Vette is to muscle cars. Now if somebody can point me to where I can get a "Terascoop", so I can complete the analogy.
The first Intel Macs actually were a big step backwards from the G5 and it took until the later core 2 machines in 2007 for them to be significantly faster.
Performance per watt is an often sighted reason and IBM supposedly would not make a notebook G5 for Apple. But in retrospect the true reason might have been to free up R&D resources for the iphone project by moving the mac platform to something closer to commodity PC hardware.
thinking of buying a dual cpu G5 to replace my single core intel pc, i only really use itunes, chrome, macormedia, office and python etc. do you think a G5 can handle all this?
just bought a 2.0 G5 250gb, 4gb ram, in exellent condition for $150. love the build quality and great speed. Plan on running XBMC and having it as a media center for the living room. Controlling it with a ipod touch.
I just bought a Powermac G5 Dual 1.8GHZ machine with a Superdrive, 1.5GB Ram, 160GB Hard Drive for $150 FREE SHIPPING. The machine is in superb condition. I am super excited and can't wait. I primarily do web development, so this machine will be perfect!
I have my g5 dual 2.7, It had liquid coolant leakage. Apple is fixing it for me, and Im upgrading the shit out of it. Using it only for Logic pro. Because ALL of my work is only compatible with PowerPc, if I buy a new intel, I can't move all my stuff. So what im doing is, Maxing out the Video card, (x800 xt MAc version), Maxing out RAM (8gb), and Hard drives, (pci-x Raid 4 120gb SSD's). It'll cost me about $500. And it's just for using Logic pro, and composing my music. its perfect.
Thinking of getting a G5 will I be able to download the newest iTunes? And be able to sync my iPhone also are you saying that in under a year no on will make programs for it
I've got a G5 Dual Core with 4gb of ram and a Power Mac G4 and I love them. However the G5 or a G5 will be traded for a Macbook soon. But the Power Mac still beats my 2 PCs
I agree with you; these machine still work well. I picked up a 2ghz G5 with 2 gb of ram for £200. Pity you can't upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion, but for web browsing/email/word processing, the Power Mac G5 works great
Hey man. Just roughly price it for me if possible. I'm not trying to sell it.. But I'm just curious. I have a Powermac G5. Really good Condition. Pro Keyboard, Mouse etc. 24inch Cinema Display. 2x 2.7Ghz Cpu (the seperate generation) 12Gb of Ram and some Old Nvidia Card. I got it for $700 Australian Dollars. So Im just curious what its worth now . Cheers dude :)
@360ownez: That's actually cheap when you think that right now in 2011 Amiga1200 CPU cards with PPC 603e 166Mhz (produced back in the late 90s) are being sold for more than $1000. The dead ones with any chance of repairs are sold around $500.
@zombra6 First off, which G5? And you mean 1.9Ghz, and OS 10.5.4. Secondly, you can buy a quad Powermac G5 running at 2.5Ghz off ebay for $400, which is many times faster than whatever G5 your trying to sell.
@fatninja32 Honestly i don't know, its going on ebay in a few days(Weekend) bidding will start at about £160 and buy it now will be £220 :') i will PM you a link once its up. One thing you should know is this machine is no longer running leopard like in this video, as i had to reinstall the entire OS and i had no leopard disk. Its Currently running Tiger with 1GB of ram :)
@360ownez Thats why apple moved to intel. As Steve Jobs said in Macworld 2006 " Its no secret we have been trying to shoehorn a G5 into a powerbook". He went to say that in their internal testing with prototype Powerbook G5's the battery life was extreamly bad. The found that intel CPU took less power than the G5 in laptops on they decided to switch to intel. You can watch the macworld 2006 video if you want to see it
Great video! I actually got a Quad G5 2.5ghz with 2gb ddr2, stock 6600 Geforce card, and no hard drive (i have 2 500gb satas waiting to go in :D) for $200!!! I immediately jumped on ebay and picked up a Geforce 256mb 7800gt pci-e card and a zalman gpu heatsink/fan upgrade for $80 total for both, shipped! And again, on craigslist, found an ad with 48gb of ram for $100 HA! All types, ddr, ddr2, and laptop and desktop, so i'll be maxing it at 16gb :D Cannot wait, craigslist FTW !!
@360ownez gah i hate the transition to x86. there's nothing specially about the hardware anymore. the whole performance per watt thing was bs. my g4s use half as much power as even a basic desktop pc. and if they want more power, could you imagine a mac with a cell processor in it @___@
i'm posting this from my 533 dual digital audio powermac g4, i also have a dual 867 mirror drive door. this just happens to be what is connected to my display right now.
@haxfactory Well the G5 used 650 watts for the dual, and 1000 watts for the quad, the mac pro from 2006 uses a max of 250 watts, plus the Mac pro is silent, the G5 and G4 were too loud, I really don't miss those days of extremely loud fan noises.
@oldVideoGamesChannel yeah, i'm not really too well versed in the days of the g5s, i'm mostly using g4s as reference. i still feel like they could have reduced power usage. i mean the cell didn't use an extreme amount of power (referring to the ps3 obviously). cell was pretty much the next step for powerpc 64 at least from ibm.
@360ownez I love my i5 macbook pro, it's so quick, but I've had it three months and already had a HDD failure. I also have had all sorts of issues with software and lion. The second Macs went Intel (inhell?) the main feature of these machines, their reliability, went right out the window.
Im going to get a Power Mac hopefully within the next week as my first mac, the exact model you have for $175! All it needs is a new graphics card and iknow, i know those can be super pricy but i can get a radeon 9800 pro for $50. I imagine that can get me along just fine for the casual every day computer uses.
@chrissjohn Sorry, because of that machines age it will only have about 1 years use left in it, most people i know with powermacs of this age(inc. mine) suffered from either a blown capacitor or a logic board failure(what happened to mine) tell me if it breaks, DW i'm sure it will be fine
@360ownez I have the chance to buy a G5 this week. 2.3Ghz dual core, 8gb ram and 250gb hdd for 200 quid. Should I buy it or not? Its only the tower no mouse or keyboard, is it worth it considering its an old machine?
@ojmar1 Those specs for £200 is a bargain, just hope the logic board and Power supply are fine, because they usually break after 4-6 years, as mine did :(
@ojmar1 Everything apple(iLife, iwork, apeture, logic 8, and so forth, but from then on they require an intel CPU) works up to the "09" versions, and a lot of stuff is making the transition to intel, you will find a hell of a lot of stuff wont work just look out for softwares that have "PPC" versions or "UB" versions UB means universal binary(works with intel and Powerpc), PPC- powerpc only. hope this has helped
@Mordocyanide The maximum i could get on at once with 1 GB of ram was 5 tracks which is pathetic, my buddies macbook with 1GB could get nearly 16 tracks simultaneously. I think you might be out of pocket, sure the machine is powerful, but mine died after 3 months and it was a waste of £300, i think you would be better off saving your cash and getting a New mac mini(what i've done) they are seriously insane, with 4Gb of ram i could get 26 tracks on GB all playing at once with no issue.
@Mordocyanide I'm surprised that thing could even run leopard?at least 2Ghz is required for GB to run at all well. Very informative and very funny at points! I am looking at buying one of these to replace my MDD G4 dual 867mhz as a server, but could use it for more now I have seen its potential. I suppose its geekbench scores do not do it any justice! Thanks for the video, I will sub :)

@giserson2 - Yes, there is a 970MP that was used in a power mac, they ran at 2.5GHz per core and were called Quads by some.
troyoverton14 2 months ago
@troyoverton14 there were also 2.7ghz versions
@giserson2 there was dual core g5 processors in the later versions they also had 2x dual cores in their quad core model

Problem is that g5s don't support snow leopard witch means that you won't be able to run any of the newer applications
